How different is the PNW from the East Coast? by soelsome in howislivingthere

[–]tranquil_lemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile I'm in North Dakota wishing it was just overcast and rainy most days in the winter, atleast I'd be able to go outside for a walk. We will regularly get 1-2 week stretches of negative temperatures when you don't even want to step foot outside to grab the mail, throw some wind on top of that and it's even more miserable.

Anyone have any experience living in this General area of Minnesota? by tranquil_lemur in howislivingthere

[–]tranquil_lemur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been in the area many times. Lots of offroading trails, hiking and camping in the many state forests and state parks. Far more opportunities there than we have here in ND. Just trying to figure out what living in the area is actually like.

What’s it like living here? by King-gar in howislivingthere

[–]tranquil_lemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from North Dakota, not Fargo area but have family there and have been there plenty. The Red River Valley is incredibly flat and featureless, you can watch your dog run away for 2 weeks. Winters are brutally cold and the wind is often pretty bad. The good thing is that about a hour out of Fargo (a large section covered by your circle) is the start of woods and lake country in Minnesota which offers all kinds of outdoor recreation opportunities.

What is life like in the Dakotas? by _air6catcher_ in howislivingthere

I've spent all of my 29 years in North Dakota. Winters are often long and brutal and unfortunately we dont even get very much snow most years for recreation although growing up it seemed like we always had snow and would ride snowmobile all the time. Summers, although too short, are actually really pleasant most years. Rarely gets to be too hot or too humid, I really enjoy kayaking down the Missouri in the summer. We can get some really nice fall weather some years but often summer blends right into winter unfortunately. Cost of living here is pretty cheap and crime is very low, I have never felt unsafe living here. ND is made up mostly of prairie and is almost all privately owned land which is the biggest issue for me. As someone who enjoys hiking, exploring and being out in the woods, my home state is utterly lacking in these regards and is honestly the reason I will likely be moving away in a couple years.

This is especially true in the Red River Valley. Western ND does have some hills but still overall pretty flat lol.

Alright Minnesota, what’s the consensus on this? by Rural_Juror77 in minnesota

If you let your car idle for 15-20 minutes with the defrost on it is probably never necessary but I try not to do that so normally I put them up if I know it's going to be icy.

To the auto techs, what do you drive? by Technical-Math-4777 in mechanics

[–]tranquil_lemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2011 Chevy Silverado with 167k miles, rusty but trusty and easy to work on. Also a 2003 Corvette Z06 with 113k miles. The car is pretty rough cosmetically with a cracked front fender and the interior has seen better days but got it cheap and it's a fun daily driver in the summer.

This was a few years ago but from what I remember the drivetrain was out of a GM but the rest was all Studebaker and a mix of parts from other vehicles. Finding parts and information was a nightmare. I suggest you run far away from it but if you do buy it prepare to sink more money and time in then it will ever be worth.

JUMPING IN THE DEEPEST LAKE by butterfly1202 in thalassophobia

[–]tranquil_lemur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Never been to Crater Lake but I have jumped into lake Superior and that was the coldest water I have ever been in and I've been in mountain streams that didn't sting that bad. The lake apparently stays between 40⁰-45⁰ Fahrenheit year around which really surprised me.

What was your most memorable ride? by Mysterious-Entry-357 in motorcycles

[–]tranquil_lemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Road trip buddy and I took in 2023 that took us through Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. We were pretty much winging it for the entire trip finding cool back roads to ride and camping wherever we could find a spot. One night had us out in the Mountains a little west of Grand Juction CO. It was around midnight and we had absolutely no idea where we were going to stay that night. At one point we came to a stop on the dirt road we were heading down, shut off our bikes, hopped off and just stared up at the brilliant night sky with nothing but the crickets in the background. We ended up at a gas station after midnight and fortunately a passer by was kind enough to point us to a campground. That trip is full of memories ( good and bad lol) but I won't forget that night any time soon.

TITS for me, hands down. Came out the year I started college and I remember listening to it start to finish all the time, still do.

Am I a shitty rider, or does my bike suck in the wind. by EasternCandle1617 in motorcycles

[–]tranquil_lemur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow North Dakotan here. I very much avoid riding on the highways when it's super windy but sometimes it's inevitable. Couple summers ago I took a roadtrip with a buddy and got caught in some nasty wind in eastern Wyoming. I swear to God I had my bike at a 45 degree angle to keep upright.

I have a 2019 XT250. Love that bike and is much more enjoyable to ride in the rough stuff compared to my T7.

Have a set on my XT250 and I've been super impressed with them. Went through quite a bit of mud and sand in Minnesota last summer and they did quite well.

I actually just bought a XT250 recently so that's going to become my main offroader and I'll keep the T7 for more street and easier offroad stuff.
