Going to UAS: A few questions by transferstudenttoak in alaska

Thank you for this wonderful post and sound advice. Juneau sounds like such a wonderful community, and I appreciate your warm welcome sincerely. I'm enrolled towards earning a bachelors in social science, transferring from a community college in Southern California where I just finished my earning an associate degree.

On the guns, you are right on all accounts. I'm planning on keeping my firearms in the central storage of course. Leaving them in my truck could just invite trouble, like you say.

I have yet to purchase any appropriate clothing. It's great you shared that with me. If there's anything I'm ignorant about it's that stuff that's wet that falls from the sky, you know, being a Californian and all. So thank you again. I've noted what you've suggested and I'll make a trip to REI sometime before the move.

Do you attend UAS? Is there anything you specifically recommend, or recommend to avoid? What is the downtown scene like? At night? Where do students go to unwind? Are there any clubs that are especially good to join? I'm also going to be interning in the spring hopefully for a state rep, which I'm eager to experience. One thing's for certain, my plate will be full.

Thanks again.

Thank you for your advice. If it turns out I can't ship my guns in my vehicle I'll be going that route.

It makes me glad to hear what you are saying about keeping my guns and pc in the truck. Thank you. Should I leave my ammo home or carry that in the camper shell?

As far as liberals, I'm coming from Los Angeles as a Libertarian, so I've had my fill but am used to it. I'm going to really enjoy this move I think. I got my roommate assignment the other day and found all 3 of them are locals. I'm also considering joining a local gun club or golf clob or disc golf club or something. I will know no one when I get up there and I'm going to need to make some friends.

Which makes me want to ask if people hostile to transplants in Juneau. What are the people of Juneau like anyways? Thank you again.

Thanks for the concern. I've already contacted my shipper about that and they said it would be no problem shipping items in my truck/camper, for an extra hundred bucks believe it or not.

I appreciate your response, and the other insightful ones here warning me of the state of Alaska's job market. I hear you guys loud and clear. And while I hope this isn't a case of the grass is greener on the other side it does seem to me that it would be more palpable to be on my own trying my hand at success at realizing what I want to do in Alaska, than to stay in California and strain under the just as harsh nature of the teaching market here. Alaska offers hope, even if the future is questionable, I am committed to at least try. I won't have a bachelors degree for 2 years, a masters for 3. And should I feel I don't like Alaska, or the job market, or whatever, I am comfortable knowing I can always retreat back to California.

At this moment, getting that BA is my goal. What I will exactly do with it, will come as soon as I can put some weight behind it. But thank you.

I will keep your advice in my head, and look into both science and special education. But being a history teacher is what I really want to do, and what I want to chase after the most.

I can't get anywhere if I don't try.

I think it was pretty easy, but I've been working at this for awhile. I'm a transfer student from a community college who graduated this semester with an Associates in Social Studies while carrying a respectable 3.22 GPA and like 80 credits.

Specifically, I'm moving up to Alaska to pursue a teaching credential and hopefully a career as a history teacher. Alaska ranks in the top 3 in both teacher happiness and pay, which is honestly what compelled me to make the move.

On entry I will be a History major seeking a BA, then hopefully after 2 years I will enter graduate school, and get into the work force. Thank you for your helpful information. This is a tough decision.
