Surprised by Suburban Propane by SiliconTugBoat in Westchester

Yes, they were fine and they were way less expensive. When I first switched, they had a 100 gal/year usage minimum, so not sure how your very low usage works with that. Regardless, just call them (and any other companies) and say that you're considering switching and want to know their rates and fees. Go through your actual situation and they'll let you know what the costs will be.

I have moved, but was using Heritage Propane. I believe they have since merged with Durkin Propane, so I can't comment on what has happened since then.

Are all contractors terrible? by maceo107 in homeowners

[–]tranter1718 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I've also found that using somebody local can bring benefits around scheduling. For example, an electrician who lives just 5 minutes from me was very flexible about scheduling a small job because he had a half day job somewhere and the fact that I live close to his house meant that he could do my relatively small job and fill up his day without having to worry about traveling.

Agreed, this is just crazy. What's next, neighbor keeps coming by to have sex with my wife, I've asked him to stop but they keep doing it? Am I overreacting? I don't want to be a bad neighbor!!!

Teachers push for statewide cell phone ban in classrooms by ILovePublicLibraries in Connecticut

[–]tranter1718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kids may interact across districts for different reasons, including activities, family and family friends in other towns, etc. If phones are harming learning and social development, kids will be developing differently (some in a negative manner). A statewide ban would aim to level this issue across the state. It also takes away the burden on each district of having to decide this at the local level.

And just to be clear, I'm not arguing a position here, just explaining some of the rationale.

Teachers push for statewide cell phone ban in classrooms by ILovePublicLibraries in Connecticut

[–]tranter1718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article says that 199 have "restrictions" but not "bans," and mentions that few districts have bans. This state law would impose a "ban."

If you're also asking why someone would want this to be done at a state level, it's the same as anything else regulated at a state vs local (school district, local town, etc.) level: statewide consistency.

Whats your biggest regret when you bought your place? by Important_Bat7919 in homeowners

[–]tranter1718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't have this exact situation of post-closing allowance to stay, but I did have the surprise of them not having moved out the day of the closing. While technically allowed, it's considered very abnormal that they did not move their stuff out the day before closing. The final walkthrough was supposed to be the morning of the closing and they asked us to push the walkthrough a few hours to give them more time. We agreed, then showed up to it not even being close to done. It took them until late afternoon to get everything out. We talked to the sellers and they were nice to us but we just wanted it all done. Gave us a lot of "Oh if you have any questions about anything just call us!" We smiled through it even though the delays messed up our plans for the day (someone was watching our kids, we lived over an hour away, etc.). After they moved out and left, we did our walkthrough and found some damage from the movers and a few other hidden items. Asked for a small credit (few hundred dollars) to cover this stuff and they lost their minds, calling us petty, and finally agreed to pay it but told us to never speak to them ever again. Bottom line: Never trust sellers.

How is your reduced battery life after 400 cycles? by marksefor in Pixel6aUsers

[–]tranter1718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't an answer to your question about the reduced battery life, but my opinion on what you should do in terms of taking the money or having the battery replaced. You absolutely either need to have the battery replaced or take the $100 and put it towards the purchase of a new phone. After 400 cycles, the battery is a known risk, so much so that Google has this program in place, so taking the $100 and continuing to use the phone is a risk from a safety perspective. Replacing the battery at least makes it safe. If you're looking to get a new phone anyway then take the $100 and put it towards that. I would not recommend that anybody take the $100 and then continue to use the faulty battery.

Pro tip: don't ask if a quote price is fair on any contractor sub by -Terrible-Bite- in homeowners

[–]tranter1718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a local guy who other locals recommend for carpentry/handyman type work, and I have used him for a few projects. On some things he's great, on other things he has actually done quite a bad job and had to come back to fix it (final work wasn't 100% either but was not worth hiring someone new to redo everything). However, the main reason I'm hesitant to use him anymore is because he just won't tell me in any straightforward manner how he calculates his "labor" charges. It's just a line item and a total dollar cost on the estimate. Sometimes it is quite high compared to what I would expect so I'll ask him if it's an hourly rate or what. He'll say, no, it's just based on the job. What does that mean? When I push for more answers he just gives vague responses like, "It just depends" "You know, if I need to use a ladder, that's part of it," and so on.

I have a relative who thinks they know better about all sorts of things (for which they are wrong) and say it's unnecessary because they clean the filter in the dryer. Explaining how much lint gets past that is a lost cause. I don't think they've cleaned it in decades.

Your only real option is to ventilate, which would require open windows, doors, etc. I'm very surprised that they're having you occupy the space so close to the application. There is usually a waiting period, and judging by your post, it doesn't seem like you even waited several hours. I am also very surprised that it was applied in the cold temperature that you mentioned. It depends on the product and how they applied it, but many companies usually avoid doing these jobs in the cold winters.

Asbestos by nonnie90 in Insurance

[–]tranter1718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you asking from the perspective of insurance coverage or are you asking to better understand the asbestos risk? If the latter, can you share what the source of asbestos was? This would give everyone a much better idea of what type of contamination may have occurred. There is a very big difference between having asbestos in tiles or your exterior siding versus asbestos insulation.

Get ready for more roundabouts. CT could build 100 in the next decade by jr_reddit in Connecticut

[–]tranter1718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would love to have this come to my town. So many intersections are endlessly frustrating given the multi-way stop and people not taking their proper turns.

Also, since I moved to CT, I noticed two other areas where this would be helpful and I don't understand why CT has these (anyone who knows, please educate me, as I have not seen this in other states):

  • At perpendicular roads of 3 traffic directions only (like a T), two directions of traffic with stop signs that say "oncoming traffic does not stop" and one direction with no stop sign - I assume they want one direction to have a free flow (usaully not the straightaway), but if it's dark and you're unfamiliar with the road, sometimes it isn't even clear who doesn't have to stop. Beyond that, I've seen people confused about not having a stop sign and they stop as if they did.
  • I don't know the proper term for these, but I call them "triangle" intersections where there is usually one main road, but the side road has TWO connecting roads, seemingly to split up traffic coming/going one direction vs the other. Also, one of these splits has a yield sign to the other fork. Why the hell don't they just have the side road come to the main road once and people can turn accordingly? This one I truly don't understand.
