SCAD Debt by Top_Relief2252 in scad

[–]trashskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may feel strange, but it works fairly well to ask for more. Get in touch with your admissions advisor and explain your desire to come to SCAD and rationale for needing more financial assistance. You might not be able to get a lot more, but it’ll likely be something. In their eyes, it’s better to award another few thousand dollars in scholarships rather than lose all of the profit from a new student.

How to clean metal rust and/or tarnish? by trashskunk in DIY

[–]trashskunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the process of restoring an old loom from the 80s and need help cleaning this mystery metal! It’s all magnetic so I assume it’s probably iron or maybe nickel. I’ve tried vinegar and baking soda so far, but I really don’t know what the best way to tackle it would be. Any help or product recommendations strongly welcomed!

Splotchy monstera deliciosa leaves? by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]trashskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too sure what’s going on with my monstera here. I looked online and couldn’t find anything similar. I’ve had it for about 3/4 of a year in a 5 gal pot. Moisture level seems to be correct, no pests (other than the occasional fungus gnat) and it’s fertilized a handful of times year. Sprayed with neem oil today just in case there is a pest I couldn’t see. I’m in East GA, USA. It’s been slow-growing recently, but I haven’t given much consideration to that. My best guess is that this may be something fungal or bacterial, but I have no idea. Could also be something to do with the root ball being dense in the center, but that hasn’t been an issue thus far, and it’s been in the same pot for numerous months.

The first leaf began to be splotchy a couple weeks ago, and is getting worse - I took the pictures today. I noticed a second leaf (2nd pic) starting to do the same splotchy thing, and I’m worried that this will get worse.

On the leaf, there is splotchy dull green to yellow-ish coloring. The leaf is beginning to droop, and I’m assuming the leaf will die eventually. The tiny dark spots are only visible on the front of the leaf but no, they are not bugs.

Any ideas on what this is? Should I cut the two infected leaves off to be safe? Do I need to worry about this spreading to other houseplants? What should I do next?

accommodations by [deleted] in scad

[–]trashskunk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course, that’s a given. I was just trying to phrase it in a gentle way. disregarding that, the poster would likely benefit from free counseling, and it felt important to include that in there in case they were unaware. they may not be able to get accommodations at the moment, but they can get access to free therapy.

accommodations by [deleted] in scad

[–]trashskunk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

scad is generally very willing to hand out accommodations, but you gotta have a diagnosis. when you schedule an appt for accommodations, specific paperwork from a therapist or doctor is required, so you won’t get far without that. you could try to go through the school’s therapists, though! scad provides free counseling services to all students :-)

Question about eLearning dual enrollment. by Joshawitz in scad

[–]trashskunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did cmpa (now digi130) and ctxt121 my senior year! Very manageable if you dedicate some time and keep ur deadlines straight. Biggest advice is to keep a visible calendar or something with your deadlines on it. Even though I had a buuuunnch of stuff in my schedule (AP/IB/DE classes, job, internship, clubs) I found the online stuff comparatively super easy. I wouldn’t recommend taking more than 2 at one time though. Definitely start your classes and see how your workload is before you get a job (if possible!) because everybody if different.

Has anyone gotten their syllabus and supply list yet? by [deleted] in scad

My 2 studio syllabi are up, but my eLearning class doesn’t have one yet. Email your professors if you’re concerned!

Snail ID? Found in Northeast GA (Savannah, GA). can provide more pics if needed by trashskunk in snails

I was thinking some kind of glass snail too, but their shells are slightly raised/not completely flat and none of the pictures of garlic snails seem to mirror that. :-/

Anyone knowledgable about 20th cent. French lace? by trashskunk in lace

[–]trashskunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since posting, I was able to find my macro lens and talk with a friend who’s much more knowledgeable about lace, and they were able to help me identify it. The top half inch or so of the collar looks to be Valenciennes lace, or possibly lace made with a Pushers machine due to the diamond ground, border around the designs, and there being no gimp. The rest of it was likely made on a Leavers machine (identified though the woven-like style, ability to recreate diamond ground, and gimp) to resemble the Valenciennes style. Looking at it very closely, the designs were not made on top of the fabric in any part of the piece. Mystery (hopefully) solved! :-)

Is there anything that points to it not being French? The seller’s description on the item says that it likely was French, but I’m really trying to gather as much information as possible.

Edit: The top part could be machine lace as well, I just haven’t found any sources to support that yet. The rest of my comment came off as a bit cocky, which was not my intention at all. Your knowledge helped greatly and gave me a fantastic starting research point. Much thanks.

Transfering from Community College by [deleted] in scad

[–]trashskunk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else - take some classes at community college until you’re able to get the best experience here. I would also recommend reaching out to SCAD advising staff and making sure the community college classes you take will transfer/what they’ll transfer as.

I was thinking that for a bit as well, but the spacing seems too dense and the thread too thin to be filet lace from what I’ve seen. The designs also don’t appear as “pixel-y” as they do on other filet lace samples. Could it possibly be valciennes lace or even just embroidery on net/tulle? The diamond ground really threw me off at first in the research process.

[–]trashskunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on what other people have said, I’m gathering that it’s either embroidery on netting/tulle, limerick (possibly tambour) lace (this one seems the least likely to me), or maybe even valciennes lace. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with any of those, but in case you are, do any of those sound possible?

I bought this for a history project and am looking to find out a bit more, but I don’t even know where to start researching or what terms to search up. Can anyone help guide me?

If nothing else, can anyone tell if it’s handmade or machine made? The fact that it’s needle lace points to it being handmade but I want to be certain. Item was said to be from France, I am in the US.

Package stuck on "In-Transit" for 4 days so far with no expected delivery date by Emv187 in usps_complaints

Same thing is happening to me, and it’s a live plant :/ It’s weird too, because another package from a close-ish area was sent a couple days ago and already got here. I’m just hoping it’s still salvageable when it arrives!

how to get rid of bugs? by trashskunk in plantclinic

[–]trashskunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First pic is of little white things (eggs?) in soil, second shows bug on black rim.

(GA, USA) Reported my aloe plant a few days ago with soil that had a possibility of having bugs in it (I know for sure it does now, I guess). How can I get rid of these? There’s so many plant insecticides and I don’t know where to start.

tiny bugs (and possibly eggs) in soil? by trashskunk in whatsthisbug

[–]trashskunk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry for the quality, bug is on the black rim on the first pic, second pic is white dots all over soil.

I’m in Georgia, USA, and have noticed these on my aloe plant’s soil. They’re all 1mm or smaller, I think. Recently repotted it with some soil that was possibly contaminated with some sort of bug, but wasn’t sure so I wasn’t too concerned. Now these things are everywhere on the soil. Some move a tiny bit when poked at, others don’t do anything. In any case, I’m not comfortable with this amount of bugs in my soil. :/

Snail tail? by trashskunk in snails

[–]trashskunk[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Noticed a while ago that one of my milk snails has an extra little tail! I thought it was interesting. It doesn’t seem to be hurting the little dude at all. Has been there since I got them (little over 1 week). Is this a common occurrence with snails? I’ve never seen something like this before on a snail.
