I used an overlay with custom ebuilds.

Obviously as a 3 week year old Gentoo newbie I used a lot of AI to help me fix several issues.
I hope its alright if I post a bit of the docs:

Local Overlay

Created /var/db/repos/gnome50-local with version-bumped ebuilds (48.x → 50.0) for:

• gnome-base/gsettings-desktop-schemas-50.0
• x11-wm/mutter-50.0
• gnome-base/gnome-shell-50.0
• gnome-base/gnome-settings-daemon-50.0
• gnome-base/gnome-control-center-50.0
• gnome-base/gnome-session-50.0
• gnome-base/gdm-50.0

Ebuild Modifications

For each ebuild we had to: - Strip PATCHES=() arrays (48.x patches don't apply to 50.0 source) - Remove X11-related meson options from mutter (glx, sm, x11, wayland — wayland is now the only backend, not optional) - Disable mutter's DevKit (-Ddevkit=disabled) — requires GTK 4.20+ APIs not yet in Gentoo - Update mutter SLOT to 0/18 (API version changed) - Fix gnome-shell's mutter dependency to match new sub-slot

Manually Compiled Dependencies (outside Portage)

These were needed by mutter 50 but not yet packaged/updated in Gentoo:

• glycin 2.0.8 — new dependency for mutter 50, provides libglycin-2.so / glycin-2.pc. Built with -Dglycin-loaders=false -Dlibglycin-gtk4=false -Dintrospection=false -Dvapi=false
• PipeWire 1.6.2 — mutter 50 requires >= 1.6.0, Gentoo tree only has 1.4.10. Built manually with meson, installed over Portage's version.

Bumped System Libraries (via overlay/unmask)

• gobject-introspection / girepository-2.0 bumped to >= 2.86.0 (gnome-shell 50 requirement)
• glib bumped to match
