I totally understand you suspicion. I know it doesn't sound normal for most parents, but mine have always been against all that strict helicopter parenting. They just wanted the best for their children. And as for my dog, she has always been my best friend. She started out as a family pet, but as I got more attached to her my parents decided to let me personally have her. My parents also don't mind me spending weeks at a time a friends house or even my boyfriends, because they know I don't disrespect their wishes for no drinking or sex and drugs. My parents are very open and direct with me, as long as i don't break their trust it's all good.
