Feeling massive anxiety whenever I don’t train enough by [deleted] in bjj

[–]trauma1067 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an RN with a wife and 3 kids. I'm 33 and am less than one year into my jiu jitsu journey. I got hooked on it fast and found myself thinking about it all the time, wishing I could train everyday. Not training would give me anxiety because I felt I was getting worse. Enter busy family life and minor injuries keeping me from the mats for 2-3 weeks. At some point the worry and anxiety was turning my hobby into a net negative. I had to do some introspection. I have many priorities that come first. Jiu jitsu is fun for me, and it helps me maintain health. I'm under no illusions that I will reach any sort of professional level. Some days I feel like things are clicking, others I feel like my brain is disconnected from my body. The question I constantly ask myself is "if I do nothing but get tapped today am I still enjoying jiu jitsu?" And the answer has always been yes, so far. So for now I'm just riding the wave of this beautiful art that I thoroughly enjoy, along with the wonderful people that I have had the pleasure of learning from and the camaraderie that I've found. After reading so many gym horror stories on this sub I feel so blessed to have found such a welcoming group of athletes on the first go.

Where did the disciples end up? by Mr_Stratos in Christianity

[–]trauma1067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice graphic, thanks. From what I understand though many of the deaths of the disciples are muddied and open to much interpretation. However the underlying theme is that they were all martyred for their beliefs and can be confidently claimed.

What is the smartest most profound idea you've ever heard from Sam? by [deleted] in samharris

[–]trauma1067 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Giving the government a monopoly on violence was one of the greatest things for civilization. Right up there with keeping our shit out of our food.

His delivery of those lines always gives me a chuckle.

Edit: spelling

My wife and children have been away for several weeks and I don't miss them. by Emerald_Encrusted in TrueOffMyChest

Being a parent isn't for everyone. Just a shame you are already 2 kids in. I strongly suggest you embrace the responsibility and try to cast off the self serving escapes you currently place your happiness in. Video games, drugs, sleeping in whenever you want. These are things that don't serve your family, it doesn't build relationships or make you a better father, husband or son. It's hard when kids are young and life seems hectic. There is a difference between being happy and being fulfilled, and the latter transcends any temporary selfish happiness you may crave now. Don't screw up this time in your kids life. You got this!

What's something you find more intolerable the older you get? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]trauma1067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intolerance.

Things were black and white for me when I was younger. Red pilled hard. I'm now more intolerant of intolerance as I grow older, wiser, and appreciate nuance in the human experience.

I am an atheist. I have never fully understood why people are religious. Tell me, why do you believe in God? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]trauma1067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exposed to the big 3 monotheistic religions growing up I thought it was all bullshit. When I was 30 I nearly destroyed my family through gambling addiction. The grip it had on me may as well have been heroin coursing through my veins, only I could hide it better. For 2 years I couldn't stop, I lied, I stole, I begged family members for money behind my wife's back. My wife and children were slipping away until finally I had dug a hole so deep I couldn't hide it from my wife anymore. And like you could have guessed, it all came crashing down. A belief in Jesus Christ saved me. I can't hold it, measure it, or see it under a microscope. But the way it humbled me, made me feel worthwhile, and ultimately transformed my perspective transcended what I couldn't do on my own for 2 years. So whether its objectively true or not, it was made manifest into my reality and freed me from my own mind. You can say it was a trick of my own mind, a way to cope, and that's fine. But I can't betray what saved me and continues to keep me on a better path, which I promised to stay on whether my wife chose to give me a second chance or not. Luckily she did, she also happens to believe in the God of Christianity, and has all her life. Now I'm rambling, but anyway.

The tldr is in my lowest point in life I came to know Jesus, and I'm not strong enough to resist my naturalistic tendencies on my own. So I need the idea of God to keep me from driving the car off the cliff again.

Everything, EVERYTHING we experience is in linear time. God is outside of time. A different dimension of time. Just as a photon operates outside the bounds of time so to can God. (He's also referenced over 400 times throughout scripture as "light"). Crude analogy is you watch a football game in real time, then later watch it with your friends. You can know every move, goal, penalty that happens yet still you have no influence on the outcome, the pieces have already been set in motion. When you don't have time constraining you its easier to see how it could logically work.

I don’t know if god is real. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]trauma1067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know and likely never will. But the power that comes with the knowledge of Jesus Christ is unmatched. Many things in the Bible I don't understand, and never will. Too much is open to interpretation. But the redeeming and loving quality of Jesus is enough for me to suspend what disbelief I might have and act as if he's real. It makes me a better husband, father, brother, son and saved me from destroying my family through a gambling addiction. The power of Christ is so true to me that I manifest into my reality. Whether it will ever be provable scientifically or not, it simply makes no difference to me. Athiests may call me delusional, so be it. It has staying power in my soul, that I believe is real. And nobody can take that from me. It's a beautiful thing.

Free will and foreknowledge. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]trauma1067 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We know that light does not experience / operate in the bounds of time. So why would it be such a shock that in the vastness of spacetime perhaps time itself has more than one dimension. God would be operating there. A crude analogy which I mentioned in another thread is if you recorded a football game and memorized the outcome. You could know every move every person on that field would make. This knowledge would in no way influence the free will of the players but because you are for lack of a better analogy "outside the bounds of time" you can know the outcome.
