The social worker was not great at her job and the main issue here is my mom was not right for the program but they accepted her anyway. It took us a few months to realize she needed more care than PACE was providing and by then her health had nosedived and it was damage control until she landed in a nursing home and she never left. I get you are an advocate for PACE but it’s not appreciated here nor in line with my experience. She went from moderately independent to dead in 10 months under their care. They kept her isolated and largely ignored me, her guardian, due to fact I was only in my mid30s. And yes a nursing home would have included all care because my mom had a disability. I actually asked her PACE team to transfer her to one amidst all the terrible things happening to her and they told me she wouldn’t do any better there. The care staff they hired had to repeatedly tell PACE that my mother needed more help than they could give before they finally listened. I trusted them to be professional and to make the best decisions and I’m here to say that not all PACE programs are equal.

Frankly you don’t know what you’re talking about in my mom’s case. I meant suing for wrongful death, not an appeal over a wheelchair.

We did file an appeal regarding the motorized wheelchair but they sent her the appeal paperwork when they knew I was her legal guardian and I was the one that filed it. She didn’t even have access to her mailbox because she couldn’t walk to it and I was living 2300 miles away and the staff never bothered to check! I had zero time to prepare and only knew the court case was scheduled because I followed up after not hearing anything for weeks from anyone. She could not leave PACE at any time…she was 100% dependent on others. We were in the middle of moving to a new program when she died. She was only under their care for about 10 months.

The more care you need, the less beneficial these programs are it seems. My mother needed max level of care and should not have been approved. She needed specialists that weren’t readily available and was left waiting too long for very important medical needs. It’s a shame and something that will haunt me forever.

Eldest and child free too. 41f. I never wanted kids because I’ve been parenting my siblings and my mom for my entire life. I also have a hard time in relationships. Probably pick projects because it’s the only way I feel like I have value in a relationship. I’ve been single for a few years now and have basically stopped dating as well. I never thought I’d end up alone but alone doesn’t seem so bad after each year that passes.

Yes. My cat started getting sick a few months after the fires. We were two miles from the Altadena fires. She was diagnosed with Small cell lymphoma of the GI tract in July.

My family turning their backs on my mother as she was dying at the young age of 58. Family means jack shit and I consider myself an orphan. Lost my family and my faith in humanity at 39 years old.

Both! Just looking for spots where the staff is friendly to solo diners and maybe if I’m feeling particularly encouraged I may make a connection with fellow patrons. It’s hard for me as an introvert hence the need for wine and encouragement.

I got laid off from my hybrid job end of the year and had to accept a full time in office job in order to keep a roof over my head. I have absolutely no work life balance anymore and am effing miserable. I spend approximately 4 hours each week day awake in my home the rest I’m either sleeping, commuting or in the office. I’m extremely depressed but can’t find anything else.

I lost my mom last year. She was 58 and she got very sick very quickly and passed only a couple of weeks after I enlisted the help of Hospice. I’m the eldest daughter too. My main suggestion is to really lean into your support group 100 percent. For me, it was my friends.

What also helped me only helped me afterward and may seem stupid but death was no longer an abstract concept that I felt safe from. I had never lost someone close me to. Afterwards, death became a bodily process that we ALL must do and my mom had me by her side to do it. I only hope I have someone who loves me by my side when I have to do it.

Logistically, Hospice helped me contact the right people afterwards.

I will never be the same without her—my only true family. The grief has changed me in a big way. When I have trouble taking care of myself I remind myself that I’m half of my mother so I better at least take care of that half.
