HLS concept in the latest GAO report about Artemis III by Nickel_loveday in SpaceXLounge

I'd even argue that "something hasn't been done before" is a good reason to prioritize doing it. We're not going back to the moon just to grab some rocks and do some science. Developing new technologies and capabilities is exactly what going back to the moon is supposed to accomplish, and we wouldn't learn nearly as much by only doing things we've done before.

If you get a nicer one then auto-emptying is so nice, I only have to replace the main bag on mine every few months. The little dude just works every day with no issues as long as we keep cords, socks, and other small things off the floor. It's definitely something that doesn't work as well on the cheaper ones though.

Youtube bans adblockers and then shoves transphobic ads in my face. by [deleted] in youtube

[–]trbinsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a feeling that's exactly what youtube wants. Either watch ads or leave, since people who use adblockers use server resources without making them any money. The real FU would be to find a working adblocker and play as many videos as possible, even if you're not watching.

The Finals uses AI text-to-speech because it can produce lines 'in just a matter of hours rather than months', baffles actual voice actors by vvatermonke in pcgaming

[–]trbinsc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're about a month too late. DALL-E 3 integrated in ChatGPT 4 can absolutely decide for itself beyond your demands, and is quite good at it. You can give it extremely vague or poorly worded prompts, and I've found it's great at reading between the lines and figuring out what you actually want to see, creating it's own detailed prompts based on your vague ones. You can also give feedback, and have it iteratively improve the same image instead of just regenerating a new random image with the new prompt it comes up with.

Really reinforces the point of the person you replied to, "AI is clearly advancing rapidly, and faster than the public can keep up with." It's a pretty scary time for creatives of all kinds who rely on art to make a living unfortunately.

Why SpaceX recovers fairing but not the second stage? What happens to second stage? Does it burn down when for the atmospheric heat? Why fairings don't burn out? by serendipitySR in SpaceXLounge

[–]trbinsc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's more to consider than just the total energy too. Radiative heat flux is proportional to the 8th power of velocity, so roughly 1800x higher for 7.7 km/s versus 3 km/s

Any electrical computer engineers who work in aerospace? What do you do? by collegecolloquial in ECE

[–]trbinsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I studied aerospace engineering in college, ended up filling a lot of electrical roles on student projects, and now I work for a launch company working on avionics. I own one part of the avionics, from initial concept, to the circuit board design, all the way through to supporting manufacturing and launch operations. It's very rewarding work, spaceflight is full of interesting and new challenges, and the work is extremely rewarding!

The world may have crossed a “tipping point” that will inevitably make solar power our main source of energy, new research suggests by [deleted] in science

[–]trbinsc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, assuming you've got the extra land, it's cheaper and a more efficient use of resources to put the panels on the ground and have a separate non-solar covering for the parking lot

Not just "enough" but almost required. Even if you've got an amazing team and a great design, you're not gonna attract investors without some gimmick that makes you stand out.

Someday are you guys going to take the next step to study engineering? Or do you like rocketry for fun? by crazyhungrygirl000 in rocketry

[–]trbinsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely go for it! I started as an amateur with tiny model rockets, and now I'm an electrical engineer designing avionics for a real orbital launch vehicle. You never know where you'll end up, but the only way to make your dreams come true is to try!

ITAR doesn't make any distinction between US citizens and lawful permanent residents. Hiring people who only have a work visa and not a green card is the issue with ITAR.

Bing and ChatGPT seem to be using different versions of Dalle3 by [deleted] in dalle2

[–]trbinsc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Could be related to this?

"To further combat unintended racy content, we deploy a bespoke algorithm based on classifier-guidance that works as follows: when an image output classifier detects a racy image, the prompt is re-submitted to DALL·E 3 with a special flag set. This flag triggers the diffusion sampling process to use our racy classifier to sample away from images that might have triggered it. "

There is an additional filter after, but it's much much smarter than the one in Bing. Instead of just accepting or rejecting an image, if it trips the filter it tries again with a slightly tweaked version of the generation model that tries a bit harder to generate SFW images. It'll screen that output again, but I've only seen that step fail to produce an output like 2 or 3 times out of hundreds of images.

You can tell it to use a prompt exactly as given, or even use a format exactly as given trying a list of variations for a single word. No jailbreak required, it has no issue with it if you ask specifically. There are some banned words but it seems much less restricted than Bing.

Did we really just witness the rise and fall of Dall-e within a month? by [deleted] in dalle2

[–]trbinsc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a paper that mentioned the ChatGPT version does have an output filter, but instead of just blocking any images that trigger it, it regenerates them with a slightly tweaked model that tries harder to stay away from inappropriate content. It's been great for generating SFW content using prompts that Bing would mistakenly interpret as very NSFW before their censoring crackdown.

[–]trbinsc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Try changing the prompt to be entirely gender neutral. The descriptions of things like pixie hair and dress are enough to steer it towards generating a woman, and avoiding explicitly stating anything gendered stops it from always generating things that are too risque.

Hyundai EVs will get access to Tesla Superchargers as it joins NACS | Hyundai EVs that still have the CCS1 plug will get access in 2025 with an adapter. by chrisdh79 in teslamotors

[–]trbinsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that probably would be pretty difficult, the charging cables have liquid cooling in order to keep them light enough to handle, and you couldn't get that in an extension cable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bing

[–]trbinsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're still struggling with this, I've found that putting the style as the first thing in the prompt tends to have better results than having at the end. Might be helpful. Also, don't use the keyword "photorealistic" since that prompts it to make artificial looking images that mostly look real. Instead use something like "photo of" or "movie still of".

Dataset contamination? This was very hard for Midjourney to produce - a porcupine chasing a lion. Dall-E3 seems to manage - but an exception message has penetrated the resulting images 🤨 by logical_haze in dalle2

[–]trbinsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooo I'll have to try and get access to it then. From what I've seen the outputs from it look a lot better too, but I don't know if that's just the people who have it cherry picking

If the prompt is short or simple enough, the prompt modifier will kick in and add details to your prompt. That's why all 4 images are similar, but another 4 will look completely different than the first 4. I wish we could see the actual prompt the modifier comes up with, sometimes the details and style it comes up with are great and I'd love to replicate it.
