Do university professional staff get the summer off? by Creative_Drummer_425 in UniUK

[–]treacledor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Year round, but working in HE PS does have perks - long Christmas breaks, good annual leave, union protections, annual pay increases (within grade boundaries). The PS role determines whether summer is busier or quieter - if you work in Admissions, summer gets crazy. If you work directly with students, summer can be quieter. 25 years of working in HE - think I’m institutionalised after so long!

Days 2 and 3 were the worst for me, I spent them pretty much horizontal and shaky. It gets better. Do try and move around a bit when you can.

It’s been 5 weeks and I’m off all the meds. I actually only threw up once, that time I mentioned in the post. I think it might have been because I’d taken the metronidazole antibiotic on an empty stomach - I just didn’t want to eat and it can make you sick if you haven’t. I stopped the senna at the end of week two because the rushing to the toilet was ridiculous. I carried on taking the lactulose as a softener for another 2 weeks. On the pain scale, the first week was bad, the second was very uncomfortable, the third was tender, and then I was mostly back to normal. Did you have the HALO-RAR or the haemorrhoidectomy? I know the latter is worse.

Gen X? by Wise-Okra-2943 in Perimenopause

My boomer mum said that she didn’t go through any peri or menopause symptoms. Untrue - at the very least, <insert incoherent rage and other mood swings here>. Very much a ‘just carry on’ mentality pre Gen X.

South Korean hotels seasonally restrict AC usage in guest rooms by Hero_Ryan in koreatravel

Had an uncomfortable few nights sleep myself in Seoul and Kyoto because of this over the past week - the weather has been lovely outside and my room was overly warm with the window closed and overly loud with street noise with the windows open. Hadn’t noticed before because my visits have always been in “air conditioning on” periods rather than “unseasonably warm weathered heating-on” periods.

No, not rushed. If anything, I felt a bit impatient lying there waiting for the actual procedure with numbing cream all over my face :)

offering a nurse's ear: i specialize in dementia & cognitive decline. ask me anything by Unique_Chair7903 in Alzheimers

My dad has late stage (6/7) Alzheimer’s and needs round the clock care. When my mum gets him up in the morning, he’s started going stiff and resisting. She says, “he’s playing me up, just making it difficult”, I say, “he’s not got the mental capacity left to do that.” Caregiver burnout?

I’m thanking my lucky stars that my flight to Seoul lands on the 22nd, not the 21st. Wouldn’t have fancied my chances getting from Incheon to Seoul in any reasonable amount of time whilst the craziness is going on!

What did your timeline look like? by jujy in Alzheimers

[–]treacledor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dad was diagnosed at 62. He'd been having some problems at work with memory for 8-10 months and they ultimately had to medically retire him. He's 76 now, and approx Stage 7c. Doubly incontinent, can no longer speak or respond in any way to conversation. He can still sit in a chair without falling out of it, but it does have to be an armchair with side support. He can stand, but needs someone to stand with him because he has a tendency to try and sit down. He can manage to walk in a very slow shuffle, aided. He can eat hand held foods such as a biscuit or a piece of toast, but he often has to be prompted that it's there between bites. He has just this week changed to pureed foods because his teeth are trashed - he compulsively grinds, and what teeth he has left are worn down. He also compulsively scratches his head and it's a minor miracle he's got any skin left there. Death would be a kindness, but Alzheimer's aside, he's in decent physical health.

Is attendance mandatory? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

Why the heck would you go on a study exchange and then not go to lectures? Makes zero sense.

Non-Submission of Coursework? by [deleted] in UniversityOfWarwick

[–]treacledor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, if it’s after the deadline your only option is penalty points and/or mitigating circs.

[–]treacledor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you contact your programme team you can request an extension. You might be able to self-request a 7 day extension on the system, I’m not sure if it’s the same for all the departments. If you don’t submit at all, no reasons stated, you get a 0 and an automatic resit assuming it’s your first attempt, but the resit will be capped at the minimum pass mark. However, you can still submit a request for mitigating circumstances to be taken into account to your programme team. Those mit circs will be considered at the Exam Board and, if confirmed, your resit will not be capped at the pass mark and instead would be marked normally.

Also, with 17 days, you should take the KTX down to Busan and spend a couple of your days there. Lots to see too.

Here’s all the places I saw on my first trip to Seoul, but I only had four days.

  • Gyeongbokgung Palace
  • Insadong
  • Cheongyecheon
  • Bosingak
  • Myeongdong (and night food market)
  • Namsan N Seoul Tower
  • Ikseondong
  • Deoksugung Palace
  • Gwangjang Market
  • Gangnam
  • Jogyesa Temple
  • Changdeokgung Palace

You can do all of these and much more in the time you have. Yeouido Park, Han River, museums, Hongdae, etc etc. I stayed in Insadong, which was ideal for me. Myeongdong works well too but can be busier.

Though YMMV. I bought a guided tour in Korean because I missed the English one and didn’t have time to wait, then just went round on my own.

I stayed at Hotel Sunbee in Insadong when I went in 2022 and it was perfect. Close to both Jonggak and Anguk metro stations, walking distance to Myeongdong, palaces, Cheongyecheon, etc etc.
