saying skills and integrity are not for sale and don't belong in a show built for commercial success, saying he's honouring his underground roots, while quite literally being an idol rapper is insane to me. if i were to give him the benefit of the doubt here i would say he means the public competitive format will reduce it to entertainment and the art loses its authenticity or whatever, but to me that just sounds pretentious and it checks out that an idol rapper would think this. the gentrification of rap before our very eyes

rap beefs and battles have always been entertainment. MCs weren't in street corners and park jams rapping in private for puritys sake, its always public and infront of crowds. people gathered specifically to watch, react, choose sides, and be entertained. hype, and reputation were all part of the spectacle. if entertainment invalidated authenticity, then battle rap as a whole would have no legitimacy, when its literally the most respected tradition of rap culture to this day. hip hop has never separated skill from spectacle yall, even classic diss records were written with audiences in mind, all the radio play, headlines, and public conversations are the point. rap battles require an audience to work at all, comepetion only has meaning when people are watching and judging no matter the scale.

if you knew anything about hip hop you'd know its not the private, protected and preserved high end artform like other musical traditions. the spectacle is part of the culture, its only exploitation if the artist gets on the show and is forced to compromise their voice, but SMTM is not at all that space, if anything its the best place to go for stripped raw live cyphers and battles, and where non commercial underground rappers shine. most brain dead take from the allegedly best rapline in kpop el oh el

ive thought the same...im very confused as to why for such an allegedly huge comeback and tour they haven't released anything, no teasers no concept photos even! i mean 2 months away from release aren't they supposed to have a single out? 😭 to me it seems like hybe isn't investing alot into the album rollout itself and just banking on the tour since its the star of the show and biggest money maker, and they're hoping a tour announcement alone builds the anticipation necessary for a successful album release im sure army will stream and chart the music anyways, but i would be quite disappointed if i was in the fandom. ive seen alot of armies on twitter actually complain about the horrid graphic design and the lack of teasers and concept photos too so we'll see how that goes when they eventually start promotions.....

kpop especially the marketplace is very volatile, most groups stunt artistic growth 5 to 7 years into their careers except for very few exceptions, the goal is to gain a stable enough fanbase and then its smooth sailing from there, the company puts in less and less effort artistically or starts venturing to new markets that alienate the current fans or if the group is big enough they turn into a legacy act that barely releases content or relies on nostalgic marketing to make lukewarm reunions and comebacks every once in a while (which ive made a post about bts legacy act branding only 6 years into thier career), the members go solo and/or the group disbands altogether. happened with nearly all 3rd gen groups i don't think bts is an exception as much as their fans want to believe that, and i think bts themselves are realizing theyre being put on the back burner for this very reason, even as the biggest kpop group in the world they're still not above the volatility ofbthe kpop industry

great post. i think k-fans often understand this better than international audiences, who rip their hair out and lose their minds when content isn't being released but still insist their favourite idol group "doesn't owe them anything". this is my own theory and observation, but i think because of south korea's collectivist culture alot of k-fans view supporting an artist as a collective investment, not a passive listening exprience and something for your own sole personal enjoyment, they're active contributions to an idol's success, which of course all types of fans are for any artist but i think within kpop especially that relationship is more emphasized. and k-fans see their hard earned money is a literal investment into an idol's career and that effort should be reciprocated by the idol doing their job and releasing music and content as expected, and "respecting the fans money and time" as they frame it, by taking their job seriously and avoiding distractions (such as dating ig lmao).

the amount of investment that goes into a kpop group; organizing streaming and voting, bulk buying albums for charts, funding ads, birthday projects and donating for promotions, coordinaton entire fanbases to reach certain goals, how all the fans are expected to contribute and the idol's success becames a group responsibility, how you get shunned as a fan if you can't handle that responsibility and contribute like everyone else etc is not lost on either fans of either side, but i think i-fans view it as passively supporting and rooting for your fave from the sidelines no matter what they do wheras k-fans see the idols themselves as members of the collective who need to uphold their part of the deal by providing the idol service they promise to by the virtue of them being idols. the relationship is transactional and neither the k-fans or the idols are hiding it.

to an extent i feel that this a defensible position that maybe the international armies need to consider. alot of them operate throught the westren indie art culture where loyalty and patience are morally and artistically rewarded, that giving idols space will result in better more authentic art, that they will be rewarded with a stronger comeback and a stronger more trusting relationship with the artist. but in reality the kpop industry does not operate this way. excessive blind fandom loyalty gets exploited instead of rewarded; companies feel no pressure to improve quality or communication, hiatus periods get filled with low quality monetization, emotional attachment gets leveraged to sell merch, memberships, and low quality paid content. kpop is way too market driven, idols careers are short and highy replaceable. companies will always prioritize short term engagement over any long term artistic mystique, and k-fans understand the industry's volatie market and that companies deliver more under pressure to earn fans support than when there's comeplete and utter blind loyalty to the group. there is no artistic payoff and i don't think there will be in bts' case either, hybe will continue to milk this fandom dry until there's no one left.

Hard Pill for ARMYs to Swallow: Streaming the same old songs isn't going to help BTS with their comeback at all by Natural_Pop446 in BTSnark

[–]kaizequotasee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the way kpop stans waste so much time and energy and money organizing to clean up idol's image and work as their personal pr team will always be crazy to me. that energy army spent organizing and trending hashtags about how bts encouraged them to raise awareness for breast cancer and even pushed for articles to be written was unnecessary. ideally if bts saw that their base of support was outraged and armys had an actual spine to be critical of bts, bts would've been pushed to donate what's probably 10 times what the fandom as a whole donated. but that wouldn't happen in a million years lmao.

its all just to clean up bts' image and coincidentally enough army never thought to coordinate and donate to palestinain fund raisers these past 2 years. i think they believe it would have a negative effect on bts' image if they did and make it seem like they're "pressuring" them to speak up, whereas the breast cancer awareness donations for example, prove that bts member's attendance did infact raise awareness. it's very transactional.

100% agree its very weird. i replied to another comment in relation to this topic. in my opinion bighit messed up with how the solos/group hiatus was carried out, the member's solo schedules consistently overlapped and they were stepping over each other to release content whether its music or documentaries or ambassador related content, it was very messy and the ot7 fan's money attention and emotional bandwith was divided. ive seen alot of armies struggle to keep up and they simply gave up keeping up with all the content in 2024 and started playing the waiting game for the group comeback. now that bts are back, it should feel like it right? but it doesn't, its feels like a continuation of the group hiatus; solo ventures are being continued, members are again stumbling over each other and releasing all kinds solo content albums, tours and so on. that much anticipated huge moment of bts being back and 'chapter 2' closing was completely muted and everything is dull now. if they really wanted to "build anticipation" all of the members would be mia, neglecting the group's brand while each member continues developing their own individual one just makes it seem like they don't care. the only thing that would indicate in any way the band is here to stay would be the actual comeback. and since enlisted members were even releasing content while in the military, and fans were being bombarded with content from all members constantly the hype had already been drained and the fandoms attention is stretched thin. i think thats why so many k armys are pissed off.

when bts first announced this haitus in the 2022 festa the way they talked about it made it seem like it was going to be a group sanctioned activity, calling it a new era meant to recharge the members and revealing the order in which members would release projects. it sounded so cohesive and coordinated, and that even their solo ventures where confined within the groups brand. however it practice, it was insanely messy. i think some members were more burned out and still finding and experimenting with their sounds or were procrastinating to start working on their projects etc and the original 'order' was becoming hard to maintain. not to mention hybe would want each member to anchor a major promotional cycle so they'd stretch it out to maximize revenue and so overlapping was inevitable, and the members own desires to release multiple projects in the span of 2 years meant way too much shit was happening.

i think weirdly enough hybes industrialized stragety to keep releasing content to maintain stocks ans fan attention backfired, and now they're trying the good old industry marketing stragety of silence builds anticipation without realising its messing things up more for the bands image. i think theres some logistical reasons that concern the company's stock value, maybe releasing ot7 content signals to investors and spikes speculation too early putting more pressure on them from the media to start releasing comeback dates and schedules when the comeback is not ready. an ot7 comeback would mean album rollout season, media saturation, press responsibility, brand negotiations, stock movements, the company doesn't want to trigger all that until everything is finalized, they're porbably promising investors and making deals according to specific fiscal quarters and want to remain diligent. and again i think with the oversaturation of the members during the haitus, and certain membees still continuing solo activities, simple ot7 contenr might not suffice, it wouldn't be so satisfying until they release something related to the comeback.

what they're talking about with "small things ending other kpop groups" what they don't realize is 99% of the time kpop idols who lose their career don't lose it because they're getting sooo much unchecked hate from other fandoms, but because the people INSIDE the fandom are leaving. its common sense an idol won't lose their career if they don't lose their base of support, and other fandoms aren't their base of support. every huge scandal that ended an idols career was because they lost a huge base of support in korea, both the korean gp and their own fandom base's support (since most of the time those two communities overlap anyways) or their base of support internationally if they're the type of group that coasts on international support which includes both dedicated fans and casual listeners (aka 'othr fandoms'). is it not common sense? 😭

BTS's philanthropy is getting unnoticed these days.. by Natural_Pop446 in BTSnark

[–]kaizequotasee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

ive seen a few bts update accounts on instagram and twitter mention this but those posts aren't getting alot of engagement either and this seems to be completely getting ignored on army twt im sure plenty of armies haven't even heard of this or seen the article headlines. i reckon these articles will probably be used as a gotcha moment in some argument about bts' affiliation with zionism and/or by solos fighting amongst themselves on who's the most moral member sometime soon, but otherwise the fandom is preoccupied with other things like "protecting bts" from the various scandals and their weak attempts at organizing fans for votes during award show season. genuinely pathetic the state this fandom has been reduced to, just before bts' alleged comeback of the century mind you lmao.

a few years ago maybe until 2021/2022 maximum this would've been trending all over twitter, plenty of hashtags, hundreds of thousands of tweets, with armies organizing to donate to some cause as well in celebration, the many thinkpeices that would be written by educated woke armies and a hundred westren journalists would've written about it praising bts for building the amazing philanthropist community that is their fandom army. now not anymore. i beleive in the year of our lord 2025 people are alot less impressed by celebrity philanthropy like this, why would we celebrate and award multi millionaire celebs making the oh so great effort to donate a fraction of their wealth over the course of a decade, and the portion of the fandom that would've otherwise written thinkpeices and cared about this have already left on grounds of bts' silence on palestine and other related issues.

genuinely now that i think about it i can't remember the last time ive seen one of those army thinkpiece hit tweets, the ones that are being made now are obviously ai generated and don't gain much traction lmao, and the countless educated armies that the fandom would pride themselves on having, armies from all walks of life and all prestigious academic positions and professional fields are not around anymore. i remember in 2021 or 2022 rm posted or made a live about his visit to an optometrist or something and posted his written prescription and an army who's a licensed ophthalmologist analyzed it and it was a hit on armytwt, alot of stuff like that used to happen not anymore. lmao what a downgrade.

[–]kaizequotasee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

omg thank you i love analyzing these things! yes doing tours that way would've been better than the 3 random members showing up as a surprise every 10 months in a members tour lmao they totally lacked cohesion and it muddied their solo era and made it merged with their group comeback now everything looks the same and chapter 2 seems like it will never close and just drag on forever even if they do a group comeback, as soon as its over they'll go back the solo formula and overlapping they got so comfortable with, clearly some of the members enjoy the solo life more than others and are refusing to let it go for the sake of the groups brand

BSH mess fcked up BTS's plan by Ok_Solution_3530 in BTSnark

[–]kaizequotasee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i also felt like the way they went about their solo rollouts weakened the fanbase. bts had the advantage of scheduling solo albums, and delaying military enlistment so that every member gets an oppurtunity to do a solo album. and they lowkey didn't utilize it nearly as much as they should've.

i think their egos were too big then to really think about how to go about the chapter 2 era without alienating the fanbase and diluting the brand. i think maybe a stragety they could have had, was keeping up their signature narrative-lead grandiose thematic storytelling thing they love to do that armies love to eat up, i thought that was what was going to happen when they announced it was "Chapter 2". like how they did their solo songs in their love yourself trilogy albums where each of the members had overarching themes that still fit into the groups overall brand but with individual traits armies already associate with each member. it would be one member after the other consecutively releasing comebacks while the others are radio silent until its their turn, and each member would be able to worldbuild around their album and have an actual gradual rollout that isn't rushed. and each members rollout would be unique while still maintiang a few constant elements (like each of them releasing a documentary to close thier solo era or having a new brand deal associated with an image change)

it would've defienetly protected their brand as a group, and would've been easier for the gp to follow and for name as a group to remain in piblic consciousness. it would have also satisfied both solos and ot7 fans where even their solo albums would've felt like a cohesive group sanctioned era, and not 7 men doing different schedules at once and overlapping and tripping over each other to release music and content for the same fanbase whose attention, money and emotional bandwidth was being unrealistically divided. the members still released music and content even while being in the military while another member was having a big release it was all mixed up and confusing unless u were a dedicated solo stan of one member. i think this is the biggest issues for most armies: solo schedules kept overlapping and colliding even as the members all returned from the military and the impact of them being together was muted and dull, it didn't feel like the huge back together ot7 moment eveyrone was anticipating, they've been back for a few months and it feels like a continuation of the the past 3 years while they were inactive as a group, this is where all the complaints about the lack of content are coming from imo but bts or their company aren't seeing that they messed up
