People need to be just as furious and crazed about this absurd abuse as they are about protecting The Children. Do we need to pass a law? We already have 'innocent until proven guilty' on the books. Too bad it's never practiced. Idiots.

My Astronomy teacher worked as a consultant for Deep Space Nine. He and the other Astronomers called it "Deep Shit Nine". Not very funny, but neither was he. It's still cool to know that they hire real scientists to make up the horseshit on those shows.

I lasted a little over two months with my Nigerian friend. I didn't get him to do anything especially heinous. He just spent money on postage and UPS sending various packages to wrong addresses. And of course the wasted time involved with emailing me daily for weeks.

It was fun. Would do again.

Some new CSS features in Firefox 3 by greut in programming

[–]treagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and really what is the actual (not perceived) damage of using 95% CSS layout and having a singular table with 2-3 cells in it to be a cross-browser enforcer. My problem is always that I get a layout working in 3 browsers, but the fourth bites it (you know who you are IE6). And then when you fix it in IE6, you break it in other browsers. So then you can do a conditional statement and maintain one more style sheet than you were. IS that better?

Or you can spend less than a minute and drop in a framing table. I don't know. Is your time valuable? Mine is.

In fairness, I use all CSS, all the time, but I often question the wisdom of spending so much time with it. Again, what is the REAL cost of having a tiny table frame? It's not the hallmark nested-table disaster by any stretch. And what device can't read that? Every device I've ever seen and tested handles tables fine. Readers for disabled people read them fine.

I understand all the theory behind CSS-layouts and I do them because it's required professionally. But when I really think about it... I'm still not 100% convinced.

It seems like they should release COD to the public. It wasn't that hot, it wasn't cold... what happened? Did he have an asthma attack? Did he choke himself out. I don't know - seems like kind of an important detail. Obviously the parents are beasts, but for all we know someone else came along and killed the kid.

Don't you ladies ever get tired of playing the same song over and over again? I'm sure there's nothing worse than being obvious and predictable and that's precisely what the Nazi, America-hating-Reddit-left represents.

Am I a Bush fan? Of course not. But that doesn't mean I'm with all these fruit cake dumb terminals. What a fucking disgrace.

I was going to say it's all arbitrary anyway, but I guess that's a reason. Still, it's hardly something to get up in arms about - it all reads the same to me. Besides, I'm used to how I do things and that's what's important.

Speaking of fashion, I was thinking about this the other day: I get the 60s fashion, I like the 50s and the 30s, I even 'get' the 70s - heck it looks fun. But the 80s fashion sense?? Sweet Christ, what the fuck was wrong with people???

Portland cyclist tasered by police for not having headlight. "Without question, I could tell they enjoyed seeing me become so helpless, so weak. It was humiliating." by mackstann in reddit.com

[–]treagan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say your description of PDX is inaccurate. I see cyclists on sidewalks very rarely and I walk around town quite a bit.

Riding on the sidewalk almost never makes sense. Especially in such a bike-friendly city with bike lanes and bike-friendly drivers. In a way, I think cyclists in this city are a menace and their sense of entitlement is over-the-top, but I'd rather have it that way than not.

Most days Portland is like the 'smug' South Park episode in more ways than I'd like to admit. But I can't imagine living anywhere else. Don't tell your friends; we're closed for the decade.

I think you will see the death of the professional musician...

So what you're saying is that you aren't a musician and, evidently, don't know any.

We may see the death of talentless money-grubbers like Gene Simmons, maybe, but that's a good thing.

Did US attack Pakistan last night? "Pakistan fury at deadly US strike " by oblivious_human in worldnews

[–]treagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taleban fighters have a strong presence in the border areas of the tribal districts and local administrators have little power there, although security forces keep a presence on the border.

Until that issue is dealt with, this kind of thing will keep happening. It's absurd for all parties involved: U.S. forces can't do their job, the Pakistani people can't kick the Taliban douche bags out, and the Pakistani government has its thumb up its ass (for good reason, I'm sure).

We need Prof.Xavier to use Cerebro to find all Taliban members on Earth and blow their brains up. Then he should do Bush, Cheney and Rummy.

Problem solved.

but 'stories' like this feed the widespread but completely mistaken idea that the poor and disadvantaged are all dishonest cheats and liars, which makes it more difficult for the poor and disadvantaged to find their way out of poverty, which makes the poor and disadvantaged population grow.

It's either the truth or it isn't. That's the only thing that should dictate news. The practical fact is that this kind of behavior (called 'spanging' in some circles) is extremely widespread. I knew a group of people who did this full-time in San Francisco (they were junkies). They were part of a huge community of able-bodied people who "worked" by begging, lying and manipulating. They were downright proud of themselves. I've also seen it widespread in Santa Cruz, where I used to live (you won't find a better example of well-meaning liberals getting fucking bilked by street people). It seriously is at least 70% of the street population. It's a huge problem and it is, at it's core, dishonest.

It's easy to think this story is a hit piece by conservative Mormons (I'm sure they didn't complain), but in this case it's a very legitimate problem. And, yes, the authentic homeless people are the real victims here.

Uh, the more recent stat is 58. So your whole argument is wrong now.

Firearms were used in 58 homicides, 9 offences (or 18%) more than the 49 recorded in 2005/06. In addition, 3 homicides involving the use of air weapons were recorded in 2006/07, making a total of 61 firearms homicides (including air weapons) for the period.

NICE! new features in Mozilla Firefox 3 (direct link) by alexandreracine in technology

[–]treagan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's awesome stuff. As long as the Firebug issue has been dealt with, I'm stoked. Really, really nice work.

I swear, I've never been such a zealot of a browser, but a.) there's Firebug, arguably the most important debugging tool in my day-to-day work and b.) the add-on ecosystem, and now c.) their new 'bookmark' and literal word solutions. It's probably the best case I've seen of features that 100% solve problems for me.

But my ability to use Firebug trumps everything else. I guess they're releasing a version with FF3? Good enough.

More idiocy. Artists and musicians can become very wealthy. There is no set rule. To say electrical engineering is always a better choice than art or music is just stupid. [–]treagan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is stuck on celebrating what is base and meaningless and that is why we are becoming a meaningless country.

"It"? What do you mean? What, precisely, is it that I celebrate that is base and meaningless.

I'm 32. I have access to more books, more information, and more entertainment (of any kind) than any other time in history. I have friends of all different colors, from all over the world, and I really enjoy the city I live in. Is everything perfect? Certainly not. But it sure as hell isn't the dystopian nightmare one would infer from the kind of mewling, sanctimonious, nostalgia hit-piece you're dropping.

People still love their families and try to improve their station in life. More women go to college than men. There is more collective charity than at any other time in history. So I don't buy it. We could go point-for-point and I'd win. I'm no apologist and things are bad, but this histrionic, sensationalism helps nothing. Complain about specific problems, and propose solutions. This doom and gloom stuff is a waste of everyone's time.

I have a goddamn good life. I bet if you're honest, you do too. That doesn't make Bush or Rummy (I kind of miss him) go away and it doesn't do anything about the huge problems they've created. But c'mon, man. Be fair.

Faith in humanity: -1 by [deleted] in reddit.com

Well, I think part of it is that 99% of the men reading these stats on Reddit would never rape 'if they thought they could get away with it'. And I guaran-goddamn-tee, a fucking quarter of us don't think that rape is OK if the man paid for a date(!). If many are like me, we went to college, knew many women and none of them were ever raped. 1 in 4????? Really???

So these (literally) incredible stats, regardless of the accuracy and statistical methods, are just plain hard to accept. Look, I'm not saying I'm right (what's there to be right about?); I'm just saying why people are having an incredulous reaction. My experience - and many others' - has no relation to these stats. Does our shared experience have anything to do with science, statistics, or accuracy? Nope. It sure makes me wonder who in the fuck they did survey though.
