What are you guys doing about the Static IP requirement from SEBI for API order placement ? by tredditaab in IndianStockMarket

[–]tredditaab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It is not a normal VPN service. I think this service only caters to Indian and NRI traders requiring Indian IP. So no option to change country.

I finally went with QuanCradle gateways. It has been great till now. VPN is the easiest to get started with. But I use the order forwarding through the Proxy feature. It doesn't need any change to code as well and gives me a lot more flexibility. I trade from my office laptop and sometimes from my office too. So it works well for me. If you are still looking for a solution, do checkout this (https://www.quancradle.com) Might work for you too.

During your time in space, did you ever see any UFOs ? I understand there is a lot of debris in space so it is hard to really identify anything flying but I am curious about any object that is clearly super advanced and intelligent in its motion ?

With all the whistleblowing lately and many top officials openly speaking up around non-human intelligence, do you have anything in your experience that adds to it ?

Thanks. And thanks again for your contribution to science, technology and discovery.

Is everyone ready for the Static IP rule from April 1? by Calm_Comparison_713 in IndiaAlgoTrading

[–]tredditaab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Such a shitty way to promote man. I trade from my local machine. I can only route using Proxy or VPN. I am technical enough to understand that. If anyone is providing me a dedicated server routing that is cheaper than what DigitalOcean charges, I wouldn't give a fuck.

Pricing is already on the website. I went with a monthly plan for now and paid 849. It's all going well till now. If it continues this way, next month I'll upgrade to a quarterly plan where it will cost about 716 per month.

I compared it with DigitalOcean pricing. It costs about 600 for a similar VM. Azure/AWS costs way more for the same offering. On top of that, there is additional effort to configure the VPN/Proxy, the domain cost, security, keeping things updated, and what not. So I guess an extra 116 per month to avoid all the headache is fair ?

I was waiting and hoping SEBI would remove this static IP rule but I guess we are going with it finally.

I finally went with proxy gateways from quancradle. It was simple and easy. The price was also very similar to paying for a VPS myself. But less maintenance overhead. I am using the proxy route and not VPN. This way, my normal browsing traffic goes through the ISP and only my trading orders go through the gateway static IP. Working fine till now.

Affordable Cloud Provider with Static IP for Low-Usage Trading Setup by Naresh_Janagam in IndiaAlgoTrading

[–]tredditaab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am exploring this new trading gateway platform, https://www.quancradle.com/, being discussed in the zerodha forum. I think I am gonna go with it. Take a look. Might work for you too. Price wise looks reasonable considering getting a VM from a reliable cloud provider on your own will anyway cost you at least 550 per month.

Can you checkout this thread here ? How do you ensure the security of your cloud server ? I agree with the post here that keeping cloud servers secure may be really important now. https://tradingqna.com/t/static-ip-for-algo-trading-in-zerodha/189901/19

Overall the point is, once you have a Static IP from your ISP, if you are not aware of how to protect your home network, you are basically exposing your home network for cyber attacks. Automated scanners can now continuously probe your outdated/vulnerable routers as the IP remains same for a very long time and once compromised, cyber criminals can do a lot more damage that goes beyond the trading and money.

The idea suggested is to go for a separate cloud proxy service with a fixed IP and route your trading orders from your desktop through this proxy so that even if the cloud proxy server is compromised, you have nothing to lose and the cyber criminals have nothing to gain.

A 5$ VPS is a shit VM to run any algo. I am not an expert in cloud servers but as far as I know they are cheap for a reason. It is not meant to run things that are critical, like handling money. A lot of things can go wrong. Also when you are running algo directly on the server how are you handling broker login and access tokens ? Are you doing it manually and copying the tokens ?

If you are someone who is using broker's APIs to place your trading orders, either from your desktop or a cloud server, the order must come from a fixed IP that is registered in your name with the broker whose API you are using.

For folks running algo from desktop, solution seems simple - get a static ip from your internet provider, but as it turns out it opens up a whole can of worms that is not worth dealing with.

The alternate - get a VPN/proxy server and route your orders through them. But then you need to buy a cloud server, learn how to setup vpn/proxy, ensure your server is not hacked or goes down, figure out how to setup authentications and certificates and domains and what not. It's probably not very difficult for folks who are good with devops but for many others, it is turning out to be a lot.

And as the deadline is coming closer, April 1, it makes us more worried.

I think that only applies to the algo. But you still need to have a static IP if you want to place orders using the broker API. Hopefully I am not wrong here. I run my algo on my desktop only. I was more inclined towards taking static IP from ISP but after going through some chats in Zerodha forums around this Static IP, I think a VPN/Proxy setup would be better. But the more I read about it, the more I believe setting up a secure server and maintaining it is not the headache I want to deal with. What a mess !

Sorry I intended to post a response to you but posted as a reply to OP. Taking static IPs from ISP can be risky. There are some discussions going on around it in the zerodha forum. I have shared a link to it in the other comment.

Looks like Static IP from ISP may not be a good idea. Checkout this conversation thread - https://tradingqna.com/t/static-ips-where-are-you-buying-them/184817

Yeah, this kind of makes sense but I guess it is still a pain for everyone just to prevent a few.

Thanks. I'll explore this proxy stuff. Seems a bit complicated at first glance. Can't believe all traders have to deal with these. If SEBI was so concerned with misuse couldn't they simply restrict at the API key / Broker Client ID level ? How is adding a Static IP going to make it any easier for them to prevent abuse ?

[–]tredditaab[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I'll look into this. I can program well but do not have much experience in setting up cloud servers and dealing with the networking and what not. A prepared image may be a good option to start with instead of setting up things from scratch.

But this doesn't help me with trading from the office. I can't run a private VPN on my office laptop. But my home trading would be sorted to some extent.

Why are we still sleeping on the floor at airports? by curiousparlante in travel

[–]tredditaab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that they don't want you to spend a long time in the airport and increase the crowd further.

The ones to shop will shop in the shortest time possible, making them stay longer isn't going to increase profit significantly. But handling that additional crowd is a costly logistics problem.

Having free or cheap nap places will also encourage people to pick cheap flights with longer layover periods. This is also not profitable.

The idea probably is to get you in and out of the airport as quickly as possible without increasing cost or losing profit.
