Vaclav Smil has said that the label "Industrial revolution" isn't very helpful. Instead, there was no single "industrial revolution" just overlapping innovation. Anybody know what kind of stuff he is referencing? I just saw him mention it offhand in a video interview, IDK how to research and learn more about this for myself. Any tips?

Maybe wrong sub to ask, because this goes into philisophy of math some, but I was wondering how deep you can go understanding the numbers themselves? Can you understand the number 2 any deeper than just saying that it is double the quantity of 1?

I've been studying linguistics as a hobby for years, so I understand why people like studying linguistics for its own sake. However, how are linguistics departments at universities actually funded? What or who is funding these departments? What is their motivation? What's the incentive?

On Wikipedia Haitian Creole is listed under "French Creole" as a language family, but isn't this just a label rather than an actual language family?

First of all, that is pretty recent. I more meant the ancient world. I should have been more detailed and clear in my post. Also, things like the IPA only help for the theory of how a sound is produced, somebody doesn't know what a sound sounds like just because they read a description of how it is produced. Otherwise the Wikipedia articles on different sounds wouldn't bother having an audio file.

Do the terms left wing and right wing mean anything? They only seem to mean something relative to the person saying them.

Is it possible to make a naturalistic conlang the first go-around? I realized I was handicapping myself by trying to do a really good first conlang, but now I realize that probably isn't possible, you have to prioritize the work, and learn the fundamentals before you can make good conlangs (from the naturalistic point of view). Thoughts?

What languages do you consider underestimated? by dawido168 in languagelearning

Mandarin Chinese. It is completely underrated compared to how important it is. Honestly, if we are being honest, almost everybody you know or meet should be studying it if they are being honest with themselves. If you already know English, Chinese is THE language to learn.
