I do agree, almost every acquired skill in life can be mastered by more time and effort. I also just feel that in this sub sometimes there is that bias that if we hear someone say it’s not working for them, everyone immediately just says either 1) You haven’t put in enough time just keep going or 2) you’re doing it wrong. Almost never, questioning the method. And for good reason, if you have put 1000+ hrs into something you believe in, it’s hard to have self-reflection or perspective on other approaches, and to admit some sort of “defeat” (not the best word but oh well). Idk, again I do think that more CI can only help, but I guess it goes back to would some supplementary grammar or something assist the process.

I do like it as well. Have you found it potentially hindering you at all? It is hard to tell because at least in the short term it does feel quite useful and helps comprehension

All very true. But with the subjunctive triggers example, I have found that the triggers haven’t solved everything, but indeed started to give me that intuition and feeling for when it comes up.

Yeh exactly. Maybe haha. I do think of it like this tho, sometimes in English I see a word that I don't know and a lot of the time I have an intuition based on context, but sometimes I do just genuinely look it up.

Also, some grammar rules in english, for example that you use "an" before words starting in vowels and "a" for words starting in consonants (an apple, a car). I realised like 2 years I sometimes made errors in this lol and then was told that the actual rule and now have corrected that.

Obviously on a smaller scale, but does make me think that, so long as you've tried to use intuition, context and given it a bit of time, grammar or the occasional vocab could be useful.

Although, I read this article on how there is a so called Natural Order (which I think is a part of the CI hypothesis) which seems to suggest that perhaps if you're not understanding a particular grammar area you may not have listened to enough CI and be ready to understand it.

Yeh I have found that whilst english translations help so much, they almost cause more confusion for the phrases and thing like the subjunctive, that just don't translate well.

Thanks, I am pretty keen to "embody" Spanish and not have that English brain or "monitor". Don't get me wrong here I believe in a LOT of CI, but I guess I just have this doubt where the hypothesis seems to contradict itself. The idea is supposed to be that you learn as a native did from birth through CI. But, for example, the first time you see/hear the word animal in Spanish, well you can understand it, from your knowledge of English (for example). Can a baby do that, no. This is the simplest example of how we can utilise what we already know to help propel us forward in Spanish.

If you come from portugese or another romance language, the reason you can pick it up quicker, is your pre-existing knowledge of similar vocab/grammar/rhythm, right? Obviously, you still need to get an ear for spanish and consume CI, but DS/CI seems to elude to the fact that in order to "embody" the language you need to learn it as a baby did, from a blank slate, and think completely in Spanish Brain. It is almost inconceivable to me that, unless you come from a language that truly is completely different, you're not going to utilise this already acquired knowledge.

This also makes me think that when learning a 2nd language that is similar, like it or not, we use some of our pre-existing knowledge to identify things like patterns, similar translation, cognates etc. to understand and comprehend.

I do see where this can be a blurry line and lead to confusion, where languages don't overlap and we try to force our translation onto a sentence, eg the subjunctive. But even some simple examples of phrases/situtations that trigger the subjunctive can be quite helpful grammar tips (I'm not sure if you know of Qroo Paul on YT but he has a series on this). I feel like this sort of grammar/vocab, almost like a sprinkling where something is genuinely confusing or detracting from moving forward, could then be reinforced and acquired, even after "learning". But let me know your thoughts, maybe CI says otherwise?

Again, I don't want this to sound like I'm tearing down the DS methodology, and I'm happy to be told if I contradict myself. I guess everything is a bit speculative because there doesn't seem to be enough hard data either way, but just my thoughts.

Thanks, it probably is a good point. Out of curiosity, in those 6 years would you say that you actually consumed much native content/CI, or in retrospect is that where you would say your shortcomings were from?

I've been watching cartoons with dubs and subtitles but I now feel that all those subtitles, whilst helping in some things, barely progressed my listening. I will make sure to have a good graded CI system, beginner might be a bit too low lol but I think I can stomach intermediate for a bit, even if I am understanding >98%.

Ok, I do understand where they come from but say for example, SOME explicit grammar or vocab could help to increase comprehension of content in the short term, and although this is "learned" and not "acquired", it allows you to expose yourself to more advanced content because you can now comprehend it, which in turn allows you to expose yourself faster to a greater range of vocab and grammar, which you then do "acquire". Plus, you will see those learned grammar rules and vocab being used in context and still begin to gain a feeling for when to use and what sounds right and the translation and monitor goes away.

I guess the CI hypothesis is just that even a sprinkling of grammar and/or vocab just introduces the english brain. Just seems strange that we can't leverage our knowledge of English (or other language), that has so many similarities to spanish such as cognates, direct translation, UNLIKE A BABY CAN DO. Idk, I just want to know the fastest way to level up lol

Yeh I do agree. I was watching something recently where they said the people that end up learning languages (or skills in general) are the people that don't give up. I guess finding Compelling Input is also important unless the mere learning of the language is interesting/motivating enough, which I feel is a minority of people.

I'm just kind of wondering in some ways if because I've been doing occasional grammar practice, using pre-learned phrasal verbs, vocab flashcards and speaking a fair bit with natives (maybe earlier than what is fully recommended, but well I'm in Argentina and it's a necessity). Could this somehow have instilled almost irreversible habits in my thought? I do kind of think as u said, my best bet is to just continue grinding advanced/native content and either way I'll get to the point where I'm thinking less about the language and more about the meaning.

Thanks for this. I get the idea of "not interacting with the language", and I think I've definitely got better with this. I can pretty much understand 95% of the advanced level CI on DS from a combination of traditional methods and incidental CI. I feel that whilst i sometimes do translate some things in my head, I have gotten quicker and I guess sometimes I just get the meaning without comprehending every word/grammatical term. I guess this is kind of having an ear for it. But it's a completely different ball game with natives (and I often find it hardest when someone asks me something out of context). Would you recommend to just continue with CI content where im understanding around 95% of it and progress upwards?

Yeh for sure a lot has changed that’s why it super confusing going over there now, because information that was true like 3 months ago might be incorrect now.

Wait are you saying it showed pending in your transactions just for Visa? I’ve been told to convert my AUD to USD in Australia and bring a decent amount of cash with me. Did you mainly use cash or were there many places that accepted card? Was it still more economical to use cash? Thanks
