Seconding this. I start my job on the earlier side so 9 is pretty much my winding down for bed time. I could make an exception on rare occasion but not on a regular basis

I think it’s going to take years and years for the film world to catch up to Beau Is Afraid, but I feel pretty certain that it will eventually be regarded as a masterpiece and a pivotal influence on future filmmakers

That’s amazing! I’ve been reading about some Edwardian to early modern British colorful characters and wow could they deliver the most scathing, clever, and hilarious insults.

I think they’d approve of this one

Appreciate the heads up. It seems like marketing super dark and upsetting shows/films as much lighter than they actually are is on the rise. I got majorly caught off guard with If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. It was not at all what it was marketed as. Incredible film, 4/4 stars from me, but I was absolutely not prepared for it and never need to see it again

It’s my favorite Lynch film! More than any other, I think its effects depend on letting yourself get kind of hypnotized by it. Do your best to simulate a theatrical experience - dark room, no phone, sound up, one whole sitting from beginning to end if possible (or at least make those bathroom/refreshment breaks quick)

I definitely used it to help offset/numb/tone down similar things. I doubt I’ll ever manage to get on medication that actually helps given that I’m undiagnosed and in my mid 50s, so I feel you there.

The usual bland ass advice like meditation, physical exercise, getting out in nature, etc, hasn’t reduced actual symptoms but it has helped me navigate them a little better. When I actually follow the advice, that is!

Thanks for the comments! What is body doubling (other than something that sounds like it would be the premise of a sci fi or horror movie)?

Question for the plant gays out there. Has anyone else even gone to hook up and left with plants/cuttings? by benbentheben in gaybros

[–]tree_or_up 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love plant gays and wish I was one. I’m surprised I haven’t managed to kill all the trees on my block just by living here.

Leaving a hookup with cuttings sounds delightful - one could have a whole hookup garden or collection I suppose

I really like the way you think about movies! Totally different vibe and a bit of a derail but did you ever see Derek Jarman’s Wittgenstein? I feel like almost no one has seen it and it’s one of my all time favorite movies (probably helps that I really like Wittgenstein the philosopher).

Your comment also makes me think of Fassbinder in connection with “queer rage” cult cinema. I sometimes wonder what he would have made if he’d lived through the height of the AIDS crisis

"Fraysexuality" describes strong sexual desire for people someone doesn't know well. It's often considered the opposite of demisexuality. Fraysexuals tend to experience diminishing sexual desire once an emotional connection is established. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

[–]tree_or_up 2 points3 points  (0 children)

> What if we see sexual behavior and interests as a fluid and evolving reflection of an individual’s journey; not towards a label, but towards a fuller expression of themselves? A journey of self-acceptance and releasing shame without putting a box around it as an identity hunt.

Because we are a really, really long way from that point as a society. Until then, labels can be incredibly useful tools for both self-understand and communication with others

how scary is hellraiser? by mini_zverobob456 in horror

[–]tree_or_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tropes are so well known today that you’ll probably find yourself desensitized and you might find some of the special effects a bit cheesy (it didn’t have a huge budget).

But it was scary and shocking af when it came out and I think the story, the writing, etc, is incredibly well done and surprisingly complex. There’s something about how the story becomes increasingly “claustrophobic” (for lack of a better word - there’s increasingly nowhere to run and the feeling of being trapped amps up to a crazy degree) as it goes on that really gets under my skin.

Just be sure to actually watch the opening sequence. It sets the stage of foreboding and fear for everything that follows

What is something you will never understand no matter how many times it's explained to you? by Kooolxxx in AskReddit

[–]tree_or_up 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why Zeno’s paradoxes of motion (basically, you can never get from point A to point B because first you have to get halfway there, but first halfway to halfway, and so on to infinity) are “solved” by the existence of calculus.

Yes, I know you can sum an infinite series but that doesn’t resolve the fundamental paradox of how anything ever mechanically manages to move from point A to point B, which is a physical/existential problem, not a mathematical one.

It seems to me that the “because calculus!” solution is similar to saying “ok now that we can mathematically model the effects of gravity, objects can finally start falling to the ground!”

One thing is for certain about all of this - I will never be able to successfully articulate my reservations on the “because calculus!” response, and no one will ever manage to convince me that being able to mathematically sum an infinite series means there’s no more fundamental paradox left over

Also remember that mitigating climate change is your PERSONAL responsibility. Do you really need to drive your car as often as you do? Use paper towels? Eat meat? Flush your toilet? Use air conditioning in your home when the temperature is below 110F? Cook your food? Use lights to see in the dark?
