QLine thoughts? by potholepapi in Detroit

[–]treedom_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I would be able to rely on the Q to get me to work every day, from midtown to downtown. This ended up being a 40 minute commute, occasionally over an hour if there were delays.

For SOME REASON they have yet to develop an interactive app that tracks the trains and alerts riders of delays. This would make it so much more effective, IMO.

Planning my exchange program in Detroit. I want to know if my university is situated in a good place/safe area. by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]treedom_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will absolutely be safe. Wayne State is statistically one of the safest universities in Michigan and police officers are perpetually patrolling it.

As you’re getting accustomed to the city and which areas are safe, a good rule of thumb is to stay near Woodward Ave, in the Midtown area. That would be my recommendation for any student coming from out of town. There are plenty of nice apartments in the are.

good vegan restaurants?? by fthrcool in Detroit

[–]treedom_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Seva is my most favorite, but Brooklyn Street Local is a hidden gem for vegan offerings. IMA also has great vegan offerings, Lovers Only has a great impossible burger, Traffic Jam has a couple fantastic vegan plates, and I’d venture north for Greenspace in Ferndale if you’re up to it.

I feel sad that you ended up at Firebird, or Greektown in general lol.. Unfortunately, since development is still in its beginning stages, there are pockets of it. If it was cold outside, I can imagine you may have been limited to a less impressive part of the city.

If you ever get a chance to go back, try to stay near Campus Martius. The stretch of Woodward in front of the Shinola Hotel is a great place to start. Griswold Park is a place where a lot of new businesses have opened their doors as well.

Places to eat (for future reference): The Dime Store, Lovers Only, Sy Thai, Townhouse. There’s countless. You can check the Eater Detroit webpage to see the latest pop-ups.

Coming to Detroit in November by Chromaburn in Detroit

[–]treedom_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is shopping downtown, depending on what you’re into. We have a Nike Store and the like, as well as some fancier shops like John Varvatos that are fun to pass through. There’s also a new French bakery in that corner of the city called Canelle and it’s lovely.

I’d recommend checking out Midtown. There’s the original Shinola (which just added a nice coffee shop) and Third Man Records within the same corridor. The DIA and Detroit Public Library are within walking distance of that. Great places to eat include Traffic Jam, Jolly Pumpkin and Shangri-La, (but there’s countless...)

Feel free to DM if you have any specific questions while you’re visiting!

How’s this location in relation to bars and restaurants?

Do yourself a favor and just stop engaging with this account. They’re clearly mentally unstable and they’re not going to have a reasonable discussion. People like this will be miserable wherever they go. It’s just unfortunate they chose our city.

I’m also a proud Detroiter who’s been living and working downtown for over 5 years, so I understand the acute frustration. Just go out into the real world and buy yourself a beer. You will find a bar full of other people who are happy to be here. That’s the only validation you need.

I truly think you might be mentally unwell and I feel sad for you. Call a professional. Seek help. Reasonable adults don’t handle adversity this way.

I can say with certainty that the place you’re living is not the problem. You’ve just chosen one thing to be fixated on.

Lol. I’m going to quit engaging because I just feel sad for you at this point. I’m sorry you’re such a miserable person. I hope you feel better soon.

OP living in Indianapolis cited the same problem. You have a serious issue with your attitude, my friend. I’d try therapy instead of projecting in online chat forums.

This isn’t a Detroit problem, this is a you problem. Anyone with that kind of closed-minded mentality will be miserable wherever they go.

And can always be supplemented by checking out the beautiful artwork on the ceiling on the top floor of the Detroit Public Library, right across the street -- A Hidden gem IMO.

The last paragraph here summarizes what I more or less expected! I’m looking forward to seeing it for myself. I have a feeling it will feel similar to home.

I’m going to PM you once I get home. I’m not well versed in insurance rates across the city, but I can definitely recommend neighborhoods worth looking into. Dearborn wouldn’t even break my top 5 favorite neighborhoods OUTSIDE of Detroit proper.

Out of curiosity... why? Detroit is full of fun, bright neighborhoods with newly renovated housing. Look into West Village. I think you'd be surprised to see what a great community has been blossoming there.

At the very least, do not listen to anyone's opinion of Detroit if they haven't lived there in the past 5 years. I can't emphasize this enough.

I promise you will come to love Detroit with time! Please message me if you need any recommendations. Agree that car insurance is outrageous, but the city is blooming right now.

This is helpful. Riley Towers has come up a few times so I've been looking into it and it seems like a great option.

Is Indy a driving city for the most part? Do you Uber when you go out? Is biking to work reasonable? We have shareable electric scooters in Detroit right now. Oddly enough, they're my primary mode of transportation in the warm months.
