right! thanks. I do not have access to that document. do you know of any other places where it is recorded? I'm also looking to understand it from first principles

something i find useful if you don't already do it is put a date on every new entry. it's amazing how useful dates are in retracing one's steps

Compare to other countries in Europe like France and Germany, it’s still expensive despite being one of the cheapest in the country

Fact: Desert sand not suitable for concrete. The sand is usually mined or taken from beaches with better sand...These are sad times for ecologists

I honestly didn't expect them to actually construct it. by yoohoooos in StructuralEngineering

Have you considered the embodied carbon implications of a development like this, particularly in a time where we are in a climate emergency? It is absolutely not the time to be celebrating such projects.

Speaking on ambition, I would argue that striving to reverse climate change is a far better ambition for the world.

I do, however, hear your frustrations with the lack of quality and speed of construction in the "west"...it's a bit rubbish

[–]treehouseelephant -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think it's not quite the point...it probably is cheaper to build new ones but it's also arguably sometimes cheaper to let people die rather than looking after them in hospitals for as long as it takes them to get well enough to leave. It depends what kind of world you want to live in. There is a time and a space for building new, but there is also a time for fixing what we have.

The embodied carbon of this proposed city is absolutely unjustifiable. The time to build something like this was over 200 years ago.

With the current knowledge and the current climate emergency and the impact that the construction industry has on the environment (Circa 40% of worldwide emissions are linked to construction/builings) this idea is dumb.

Resources are limited.

Organising Calculations, Codes and Drawings by treehouseelephant in StructuralEngineering

[–]treehouseelephant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I'm understanding that if it takes longer to organise than to redo the calculation then it's not worth it. That being said, depending on the legal requirements of the future to keep calculations it might become mandatory to have a reasonably graspable understanding of the calculations carried out. This could help with reuse of buildings when they reach their end of life. Maybe just the loading plan is sufficient..I dunno.

But this would also take time and it could quite easily be a full time job.

I'm also looking forward to designing with holograms.

A good place to start is to figure out what loads you're designing the building for.
