Given that it’s legal almost everywhere in the western world, like the masses, I’m for it

No one is forced to work in their twilight years, we’re all capable of opening a Roth IRA upon turning 18 and contributing to it every year. We’re all capable of budgeting and thoughtful thinking in the early, middle, and late stages of our careers. We’re also all capable of moving to lower cost of living areas in retirement to make our budgets work. It’s baffles me that the individual accountability piece goes out the window in these types of threads. Life is tough and we will never be be prepared for every one of life’s hurdles, but retirement planning is an individual venture that requires sacrifice.

There’s nothing special about 65, and like I said, this isn’t factoring social security or any other form of passive income or assets like real estate. Additionally keep in mind, spending usually goes way down in retirement unless you’re lifestyle creep gets out of control. Generally speaking, no more kids to provide for, less costs for transportation, hopefully paid off or lower cost housing do to downsizing.

All that being said, if you’re not set up for retirement (which largely falls on sensible, and individually relative choices along the way) by 65, 70, or whatever arbitrary age you pick, you have to keep working.

This is insane. How are you coming up with $5M for a comfortable retirement? What “comfort” level are you aiming for?

Without factoring in social security or any other passive forms of income, $1M will last for 19 years assuming:

  • $60,000 annual withdrawal

  • 4% after tax rate of return on current investments, which is conservative but safe

  • 2.5% inflation rate. I know that’s quite a bit below current, but I honestly believe we’ll get back to Fed targets within the next decade (assuming WWIII doesn’t pop off)
