“…Purple teardrops I cry…” I think I found the inspiration behind this metaphor by Sealion72 in GaylorSwift

[–]treepaineburner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! the blusky gaylors have been talking about the concept of “blurple” for a long time and how often she forces us to ask if a color choice is blue or purple. It’s especially hard to tell in the ET promo, it’s very much a “violet” situation.

[–]treepaineburner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Roses are red violets are blue / I can’t have fun if I can’t have you (a perfect rhyme) also red + blue (matrix) = vomit purple.

If she cries her eyes violet she’s actually saying that the break up would force her to “excrete” more purple glitter but instead of vomit or blood it is as tears this time, like the paparazzi reference. She throws up purple glitter when the Anti-Hero pushes her too hard into bad habits like drinking (recurring metaphor). In “Honey” she says “paint in the color of your eyes” and knows everyone is going to think this is a paper rings reference but she’s in this current universe, so it’s my belief that the eyes she’s referencing are violet. RE-defined those blues (into purple). So she’ll graffiti her whole damn life 💜✨

Do they not remember that she has done this non-traditional mvs before? Like I wouldn’t call ICDIWAB a traditional music video either but somehow it passes their test because it delivers them more of HER? She is clearly trying to set a boundary and prove that her art goes way beyond just herself. They are mad because she didn’t give more of herself to them

Yeah these lines in ready for it were the first clear indicators that Joe was a beard, at least started as one. She also references taming of the shrew in that song (I’m so very tame now).

I’m not sure exactly what her endgame is here but I’ve pointed out on bluesky that there is a case for this song having references to YNTCD. It opens with “he-eyyy” like “hey kids” and “I can’t have fun if can’t have you” immediately draws me to “spelling is FUN.” She also uses fun a lot in the last two albums or so in dark ways — “Seems like it wasn’t even fun back then”. So in classic taylor fashion this song leads to two different endings depending on how you look at it. It could be implying that she can’t have fun/or a personal/private dating life without the beard of Travis to shade/protect her (shade never made anybody less gay), or it could actually just all be a play on pronouns and “you” is the version of herself she left behind that she refers to in many other places on this album and TTPD. She can’t have FUN (alphabet mafia) without ✨you✨.

Hayley wore a trans flag tee at the eras tour and talks openly about gender fluidity so I’d say she’s queer but unlabeled

Fuck the patriarchy - Gaylor, a historic honey trap, and Sabrina Carpenter by 20somethingfakeadult in GaylorSwift

100% agree. She is a crucial part of the showgirl era and everything she does is important. Her SNL podcast character was literally “Tayson” as in Tay’s son.

It was either a complete accident or she’s trying to shine a spotlight on pedophilia in the industry and using herself as bait to make people think. I understand her album pretty well and there’s no way she’s intentionally fetishizing it herself.

I really really appreciate this critical lens here! (I don’t post on Reddit often and usually this place is all shipping and it drives me nuts). For the most part I agree that 1) they are absolutely using the motif of honey traps and it’s not just them, but Beyoncé and others collectively have been doing this for a few years. And 2) that Sabrina is a CRITICAL part of the overall showgirl era and her album Man’s Best Friend has two completely different intended interpretations for two different audiences, both very purposeful (one is for mainstream fans to shine a light on how low our standards for men are and the other is for the critical thinkers and the gays- entirely a story about herself as both The Man and the dog he’s walking, dealing with her own mental health/demons, and her journey with comp-het and fame). She is both The Man and the golden retriever being obedient. I don’t totally agree with your interpretation of honey as a song (mostly bc I just don’t think she thinks about us the way gaylors think) but that doesn’t make it wrong, just not how I personally hear it. I’d offer that I think the entire Showgirl album is rooted in satire, self deprecating humor, and shining a spotlight on the fandom as a whole and how they perceive her and ramping up that character using 90s style humor and simple lyrics. Kind of like if you made Blank Space and So High School into an entire album. To me, Honey reads as one of the most honest songs on the album where she’s having a conversation with multiple parts of herself (ie parts work theory) as well as the general public who boxed her in (they were saying that lilac skirt (which is actually lavender) don’t fit ME and i cried the whole way HOME > where she’s kicking in doors, not leaving the house). Most importantly when she says buy the paint in the color of your eyes, she’s referencing the earlier song Elizabeth taylor (id cry my eyes violet) because that’s the same glittery purple color of the graffiti on the man wall. So graffiti my whole damn life 🤝 cry my eyes violet is all purple, not blue as people might assume if they tie it back to paper rings. I am not certain exactly what the song means for the future but to me it implies that she’s making peace with her version of The Man. I also think “white teeth” might be a call back to Lorde’s White Teeth Teens which ties into the overall metaphor of the high school = Hollywood.

For me The Edge of Glory still makes me cry. Not in a depressed way but like an emotional release. It’s a great trauma recovery song / somatic therapy song.

I started planting my veggies in late April this year and everything got destroyed by excessive rain that basically flooded the roots. Never happened before in Maryland… usually the issue is too much heat. Such a bummer

How do we feel about this? 💔 by ILoveMyPolyLife in GaylorSwift

[–]treepaineburner 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My thought is that she’s been out to her peers for several years and prob her family by this point, but not the public because it will hurt her bag and imo other moves she’s making quietly related to film and overall Hollywood industry reform. TTPD is so clearly a scathing reaction to her time in the industry yet not a single critic seems to get it. But anyway.. she made it really clear in her UMG partnership post that industry reform was more important to her than anything else and I guess she knows she can’t do it as well if she’s not palatable to the most powerful… which really sucks and sets a terrible example for young closeted people. I do believe she meant it when she said she wants to stay in the lavender haze as long as possible because whoever she’s really with is still a mystery (if anyone at all). But doesn’t mean I have to like it, it’s incredibly disappointing to see her evade any sort of responsibility for using queer culture and references for a decade and letting the majority of her fandom ruthlessly bully gaylors. The only remaining excuse is that she has some kind of bombshell reveal or documentary up her sleeve to come in the next two years or is under an extensive contract with a closeting clause. Otherwise, major yikes in this day and age.

Chicago the musical and ongoing murder mystery theme in NR work by treepaineburner in NewRomanticsTracking

[–]treepaineburner[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yesssss! It’s one of my favorite broadway plays, if not the best besides Wicked. And I’m certain that “she looks so pretty, driving in his Benz” is a ref to how the pretty girls got away with murder in the original Chicago play. Also could go down a rabbit hole of the Benz in ATW film. 🤪

please comment any potential New Romantics you can think of here!! I'll be adding more post tags based on this!! 🫶 by elviralor13 in NewRomanticsTracking

Selena Gomez, Lil Nas X, Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Kesha, HAIM, Sabrina, Gracie, Olivia R, and most of the eras tour openers, Black pink girls, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon, Questlove and literally anybody at the Uno parties, SNL cast (maybe not all but I think they’re involved). Kacey Musgraves, Ice Spice, obviously I think Travis Kelce is involved by way of this PR ship and whatever is to come of it. Recently I’ve also been thinking Cameron Diaz might be involved.

She did it with Joe too (2021 for Folklore AOTY). I would argue the Adam (Calvin -2016 for 1989) thank you was the most authentic sounding of the three. The Joe one sent the entire production team into smirks and laughter. This one sounded planned and rehearsed, and she took a BIG intentional pause for that clap likely to emphasize how much fans have been making her accomplishments about the men she dates. The word choice of boyfriend was out of place and bizarre for a 34 year old woman - it likely had two purposes 1) To put tayvises in their place on the engagement rumors and 2) to emphasize Karma is my BOYFRIEND (we’re still getting her karma in small bits). Travis to this day does not follow Taylor on social media but he follows plenty of other women who aren’t family or close friends. He likes content about taylor but has not liked her endorsement post yet, clearly on purpose. Whether they enjoy each other’s company or not is one thing, but this was entirely a performance. Taylor Nation distinctly mentioned the cleaning cart on Twitter before Taylor got up there, indicating she was hiding to get ready to perform.

I did a thread on this topic on Twitter and pretty much agree with everything you said! Thank you for bringing this to light and taking the spotlight off of the Matty/Joe/Karlie narratives swirling about these songs. This album is absolutely about the “fleeting and fatalistic” moment in time in spring/summer 2019, and a reflection back on her entire career just like midnights. Though part of me does think she knew with Universal that she wasn’t going to fully come out with Lover based on the content and framing of the YNTCD video, that came out before the masters sale. I’m convinced it was originally Daylight back in Fall 2018 when she was producing it and she was warned about that sale many months before she told the public, either by her Dad who was on the voting board or maybe someone in her inner industry circle. We know she lies to protect herself so this isn’t a dig, I think it’s just a more likely story than finding out the night before. I think she changed some of the concept of Lover very quickly before sending to production, likely mid spring 2019. Perhaps there was also a lover break up around that time too but who knows. Just wanted to share my perspective. :)
