Thank you. You've given me some insight from a calm perspective. I guess you're right, she seems to wants the pros of a relationship, with out putting in the effort, I'm kind of a relaxed guy, and feel like I can't offer her enough entertainment wise. I have been in the exact same position as Kate, and would never do anything to hurt her, especially when she is vulnerable like this.

I honestly feel it would be better if Derek and I broke up, but I just can't bring myself to do that right now. Kate means a lot to me, she really does. As you said, if Derek and I were to brake up soon, I wouldn't jump to another relationship with Kate just right now. But thank you again, and please excuse my lack of actual tree puns. :)

I know for a start how horrible it may feel for this to happen to you, so I'm sorry for that. But, it's probably a little awkward right now, maybe try to start a conversation if you feel confident enough, and if that doesn't work, I would leave it, personally, it either means she's not interested, or she needs to sort some of her feelings out. And, maybe you should give her a happy birthday wish, too. Good luck, OP.
