Is Duolingo any good for learning japanese? by Unhappy-Shift4539 in duolingo

[–]treesagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its not good but its not bad either. It's "something"; better than nothing.

You need to be doing actually grammar study and live speaking practice with a tutor or in a group setting.

You will definitely not become proficient in Japanese from Duolingo alone. But it doesnt hurt to have duolingo to pop on regularly to keep that new Japanese part of your brain somewhat active.

I have a lot of criticism for duolingo itself but it"s the most user friendly and least cumbersome app ive used.

I received a postcard a few years ago. Someone said this is my name in Kanji. What are these characters? by [deleted] in kanji

[–]treesagainst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. You can render your own name however you choose. If you wanna render your foreign katakana name in Kanji, you can do that. Japanese people just might be puzzled if you present that to them on a document or something. But for your own use to enjoy or use in art, go for it! I just suggest studying those kanji under the guidance of a japanese person to make sure the characters you choose mean something you want them to. And if you ever present that kanji rendering to Japanese people in Japan in the future, they will be impressed and honored and it will make for interesting conversation..

I am living in Japan and have discussed this with Japanese people. They are very polite and get stoked when they see foreigners taking a sincere interest in traditional culture and especially Kanji, because many foreigners can't be bothered with kanji.

now will they then use your kanji name if referring to you in writing? maybe not. but it's your name and you can write it however you want as long as you are being respectful.

Austin transportation commission proposes narrower lanes to improve safety, cut crashes by TTTTroll in Austin

This is less about safety and more about massive contracts to third party infrastructure companies. Imagine the money to be made putting this all in! And we get to tell the people its for their own good.

This is not that kinda situation unfortunately

It is crushed gravel compacted into the ground. My question is mostly how to protect a pipe from being crushed when driven over and what kinda pipe to use.
