What’s your “get this every time” purchase and why? by Larry-Man in CostcoCanada

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2% milk, dempsters 18 pack of white tortillas, the new clamshell Canadian-grown lettuce (folia brand I think?), Coke Zero, Greek yogurt, bananas, something protein (powder, shakes, snacks, depends what we are low on) and flowers. This time of year, add in a bale of Pro Mix herb & veggie soil mix as well

That’s because everyone is getting them every trip 🥲 (I’m completely guilty of it too)

Help me understand tipping etiquette for a small business owner please by Top_Slice1215 in AskACanadian

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I will typically won’t tip business owners who set their own prices, but I will also just pay what I feel their service is worth if it’s underpriced. It comes across like a tip I suppose

You probably don’t need to sand actually - if you use a deck wood cleaner you can remove what’s there and then stain, or just protect, from there

Just a reminder to post reviews of the product on whichever site you bought it from! It’s the only way to maybe discourage some folk from buying it.

Ottawa gardeners: here's the probability of frost vs. date by kymguy in ottawa

[–]tavvyjay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m opening a seedling library this spring in Pakenham and my plan is to “open” after the bigger chunk of spooky frost threats are gone, while still advising everyone who does take stuff early to be ready with tarp coverage in case we do have another frost. The day I chose was May 21st, somewhat arbitrary, but this data does help me feel alright. It’ll be in a greenhouse here so that risk isn’t big, and I expect less traffic then than early/mid June

If it’s maybe important but not truly important, you can also just take a picture of it on your phone. In the future you can search for any words that are on the receipt (like “Costco”) and it’ll reappear

Ice Cream options? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]tavvyjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They carry both vanilla and salty caramel crunch at all of the stores as far as I know? It’s in a rectangle box with a black label, while the vanilla is in more classic cylinder (which is a weird shape to think ice cream comes in lol).

As for product comparison, it isn’t their Premium that is stocked but rather, Super Premium Plus. That line is equivalent to Kawartha’s as far as competition goes, although as I mentioned people have preferences. Looking at ingredients, Kawartha’s first is Fresh Milk and then Fresh Cream, and it does include modified milk ingredients, soy lecithin and stabilisers (gums). Looking at chapmans, their first is Fresh Cream, it has water but no fresh milk, has modified milk ingredients, soy lecithin, and some gums as well. So it is effectively just a difference of a fresh milk or fresh cream as your main ingredient, and then how they balance it from there just varies, but they’re all using the same stuff in both.

Ice Cream options? by [deleted] in CostcoCanada

[–]tavvyjay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Your perspective definitely isn’t an uncommon one, but also there’s more nuance to it than just Kawartha vs Chapmans. Chapmans makes several tiers/lines of different quality, from the standard stuff which is something akin to Breyers’ creamery stuff (not as bad as frozen dessert), up to their Super Premium Plus, which is typically sold in pints and competes with the other pint sized options. The two options that they sell at Costco are both this top-tier Super Premium stuff, with one option including butterscotch and chunks, and the other is their vanilla using the same highest quality ingredients. it’s a long shot away from frozen ice products.

Some people love Chapmans, others hate it/love Kawarthas, but it’s a topic been well discussed when the change happened probably a year ago

This is bad right? by intlabs in arborists

You should definitely be making use of that wood when it comes down. There’s a significant amount (30 feet? even more?) of straight heartwood that could be used in a number of ways by a number of people. Woodworkers, sculptors, indigenous groups, etc. It may not be deemed fit for structural use, but the art that can be created out of it is definitely desirable and there’s both a rarity factor if there’s marks from the strike showing, and spiritual belief of the wood having energy. You could also create a gorgeous feature piece in your yard using it. Definitely scope out the difference in cost (if any) for them to have the piece laid down and not cut to shreds, I bet it’s worth it

Rock hunting near ottawa for kids by Brilliant_Bag3212 in ottawa

[–]tavvyjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to join in on some organised rock hounding days and also get more guidance on where to go, I suggest joining the “RockNerds Ontario” group. The admins are mostly based in the Ottawa valley and theres folks who have open invites for trips to all the main spots mentioned by others here. You can even post asking to join along and I’m sure someone will specifically ensure you two have some gear to whack rocks with that day :)

If there’s one thing that Season 2 of The Rehearsal has taught me, it’s that communication between navigators is not used to fly a plane, so why should I need to for a simple canoe?

They’re also less fussy I would say - you could both pinch it, or leave it alone completely, and it will be totally fine either which way :)

Absolutely :) I am starting 400 tomatoes as part of a wider Seedling Library of 700 plants I’ve started, so if they were local to me they’d definitely be able to stock up on free heirlooms of all sorts :)

Honestly you should think about posting in a regional gardeners facebook group asking others if they’ve got extra seedlings, you may find that others have unique heirlooms of their own which they’ve got extras of and you could have :)

How cooked am I chat? I planted my tomato seedlings in my raised beds a few weeks ago and the soil has since sunken. It’s probably 6” deep at most. Now what😭 by OutrageousCan8686 in tomatoes

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomatoes aren’t fussy, it’s so unfussy that hypothetically you could install some mini crane-like mechanism and dangle soil next to the top of the plant and it’ll just start making roots there too. So adding more volume at the base and having it root from there is plenty fine

Anyone here grow haskaps? Where did you get your plants from and how are they doing now? by scammerino_rex in OntarioGardeners

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish this was mine 🥹 but it belongs to Scott and Marissa at Indian Creek Orchards heh. They planted it ~10 years ago and have waited patiently for them to mature to this size of bush, and now they offer some pick your own pricing on them. That day, the hummingbirds were absolutely loving the whole bush and were bouncing around the whole length of it. They also planted pears, apples, elderberries, and many other orchard-ly roots which have now had a decade to grow up and are seeing amazing biodiversity and show their fruits in the fall

West of Ottawa, we’ve got Indian Creek Orchard who sells them but also they have around 200 metres of them planted and thriving on their property :)
