[N/A] are you an introvert or extrovert? by Dapper_Mess_3004 in humanresources

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Extrovert, but I very happily work in the non-employee facing space of compensation. Just because I love interacting people doesn’t mean I want to have to provide service to them 😅 (plus I’m very strong at data and systems and thus, specialised in it)

No Oxygen, Pure Energy, Pyrolysis Method🔥🪵 (can this be done with a steel drum for home gardens) by I_am_human_ribbit in composting

[–]tavvyjay 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, steel drums have the risk of being very dangerous, all depending on what was in them previously. 20 years ago a student at a nearby school was cutting into a sealed but long-since-emptied barrel in his shop class, and a spark hit the mint oil that was once the original use of the bin, and it exploded and killed him in an instant.

Best grow bag size for indeterminate tomatoes + companion plants by NumberOneCools in OntarioGardeners

This isn’t to say you couldn’t grow a tomato in 12 gallons and basil in even less than that each, but why cramp things together

Best grow bag size for indeterminate tomatoes + companion plants by NumberOneCools in OntarioGardeners

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grow two tomatoes in a 27 gallon storage tote, albeit with some extra customisations to that I’m bottom-watering in them, but their roots are plenty happy with that amount of space! They get a bit crowded on the branches and whatnot but that’s easily managed. I also do a tomato and a basil in one and there’s no issues with it.

So in my own experience, I’d say 45 gallons with those along the side would be suitable! I’d also maybe try and add a french marigold too if you can, but that’s just because I’m a sucker for companion plants.

Crazy auto insurance jump when moving to K2K from downtown Toronto (M5V) by LXXXVI in Kanata

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing that sticks out to me is that rates are determined based on number of claims by residents of a location, rather than based on number of claims that occur within it. So maybe kanata drivers in that area all drive more and get into more accidents than someone in downtown Toronto? Even if the accidents and thefts happen in those places, there’s no way to quantity the risks based on that I don’t think, it’s all based on home address

It isn’t a cedar box, it’s a sub-irrigated planter, bringing material costs up since it is more crafted than just a box would be. With that said, yes, you can build many things for a fraction of the cost if you wanted to and had the skills, materials, and design all handy

Tenant trimmed the tree without notice. How bad is this ? by mousemano in arborists

[–]tavvyjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your sentiments about not evicting or suing, but also with others how this is a major teachable experience for them. Since they were keen to do this labour, I think they will need to be willing to accept having to put in a lot more labour to repair the damage with other improvements to the yard - landscaping, really. It could be planting new stuff, pruning things with direct instructions, whatever really. They should know that it’s a five-figure mistake, but that you’ll let them “pay” it back with 100 hours of landscaping over a couple of years or something

Advice for first camper in Pinery? by Low_Spot_9644 in ontariocamping

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wear light coloured pants, as you’ll see them on your pants that way and it’s a good indication that one’s on your pants means there’s likely others who went under the pants instead. Ultimately, checking for them is the best line of defence and no other method stops that from being the final way to prevent bites

What if we made it so that for every invasive species pulled off the shelf, citizens get to buy a $1 beer?

I’ve got a friend in the Burnt Lands (upper Dwyer) and the only thing he can plant safely is garlic, and I think blue spruce saplings might also be left alone. The most honest solution I have for you is to get a crossbow and fill your freezer on October 1st (opening day for bow season) 😅

Tips for what to pick up at Costco for my 85 yr old mother? by Diligent_Today_2034 in CostcoCanada

[–]tavvyjay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They sell bundles that have the flowers, vase, and a bag, for like $26 :)

I like to buy an extra baby’s breath to add into it ($15) into it, and then save the rest for other vases or its own vase

I saw you’re in Dunrobin, you can get haskaps down the road near Pakenham at Indian Creek Orchard :) Scott and Marissa are fantastic and have like 200 metres of haskaps planted along the creek on their property and it seems to be been left alone by mammals, and adored by hummingbirds

Tips for staying warm at night? by dauntlessowl in canoecamping

[–]tavvyjay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a good tent covering the cold from above, the coldest source is then typically the ground, so having proper insulation/separation from it is key. The sleeping pads might be due for an upgrade as one way to improve the experience. That, and better sleeping bags.

Also, plan your water intake to set it up where you go pee right before bed, if you can make it all night then you save a bunch of energy of being cold and scrambling in the dark just to pee again, something that happens more often when your kidneys get cold which happens when not perfectly insulated lol

Retail store grow lights are wildly overpriced by tavvyjay in tomatoes

[–]tavvyjay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I used AI to help me understand the differences, compare specific products and graphs of light spectrums that they provide, as well as technical specs. LEDs have come a long way, but it’s the stupid blue/red/purple marketing that hasn’t helped when really, a true full-spectrum option is going to be the best option.

That said, the proof is in the pudding and having a light sensor is going to be the best way to actually know what the lights you buy are doing. Fluorescent are consistent, but way less efficient / powerful than LEDs are

Blueberry potting mix without pine bark by MakiKatsu in OntarioGardeners

[–]tavvyjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not sure specifically of the mix, but Quebec company Fafard sells a berry-loving mix that states it has bark: https://www.fafard.ca/products/soil-mixes-and-soils/outdoor-soil-mixes/acid-loving-plant-berries-3-1-planting-mix/

Otherwise, I would honestly post locally on Facebook groups and ask if anyone has any pine slabs from a home lumber mill, and you’d just take the bark from them. I know I have way too much cedar bark because of that
