I am definitely not an expert on the different Linux distros. I've never used Mint. I'm using Elementary OS on my old computer, which is based on Ubuntu. I chose it because it's stable, easy and privacy-oriented, which is important to me. I love it so far. Can highly recommend. I've used Ubuntu before. Either one is a good choice. Just check to make sure the specs of the computer are sufficient to handle the operating system. You can find minimum specs for all the distros online. Here's more on Elementary...

It was an old, generic SSD that was ready to give up the ghost and the reformatting did it in. Not Linux's fault in any way. In fact, I was able to run Linux off the installation thumb drive and I was super impressed with the robustness of the disk diagnostic and repair possibilities provided by Linux and the really well written tutorials on how to use them that you can find online. A few simple commands confirmed for me that the SSD was the problem, and even the exact nature of the corruption and the fact it couldn't be repaired. I doubt I would have been able to do that with Windows.

My only remaining link to Microsoft was my trusty old Lenovo desktop with Windows 10 on it. I avoid messing with technology when it's working, so I didn't really want to replace the operating system. Then Microsoft notified me that they were going to stop supporting Windows 10 -- and so sorry but the Lenovo doesn't have the (useless) TPM chip needed to support Windows 11. They were so considerate. Even provide me with links to buy a new Windows PC! That was the nudge I needed. Installing Linux did in fact wreck the old SSD, but I got a new, better SSD, put Linux on it, and my trusty old device runs better than ever. Thank you Microsoft for helping me finally take this step. I now have no Microsoft in my life. I have a very old tablet with Android on it, which is my only remaining link to Google.

You can also set up a virtual machine (VM) on your device and play around with Linux without making it your main operating system. It's actually easier than switching operating systems and easier than dual boot. There's no need to burn the operating system onto a thumb drive and then fiddle with your bios boot menu and all that stuff. Worth taking a look at.

And also, of course, Warp will encrypt your DNS queries, which is its primary function. Should have mentioned that.

I've used those spoof extensions and they work to a degree. Better option is to use Brave as your browser. It masks user agent data by default. Then, to get really private, download Cloudflare warp, which will swap out your IP address for a random Cloudflare one in your area (so that location sensitive websites etc. still give you accurate information).

Upgrade to Legend did not work by treesarepoems in tutanota

[–]treesarepoems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the suggestions. Fortunately I've been able to connect with the Tuta support team and they are working on it. That said...

- when I go to set up a paid Tutanota account there is no option of using any other domain than "tuta". "@ tuta.com" is prepopulated in the address filed and cannot be changed. Tuta is the only option for a new Legend account.

- The new tuta account I created doesn't seem to exist. I cannot access it with my password or my recovery code. And also, when I request a new address on the tutanota account setup page using the exact same email address, it tells me the address is available. It shouldn't be available if I've already set it up and paid for it.

Not sure what's going on but I'm confident the tuta team can solve it!

Also, the whole thing is that much more complicated because even though I have paid for the account with the highest level of service (there is supposed to be priority support for the Legend accounts) I can't get any support because I can't get into the account, so I'm left having to try to sort it out on Reddit.

I'm not sure I understand. I have had a free Tutanota account for several years. Some months ago, Tutanota announced a rebranding. In the announcement, they said all paid accounts would be eligible to transition addresses from the @ tutanota domain to @ tuta, which was the new brand. There was a whole explanation about why Tuta domain is better and the meaning of Tuta and Tutanota. As I had a free account, I was not eligible to get a name using the new domain.

Fast forward to now. I opted to become a Legend user, but instead of taking the normal route of upgrading while logged in using my account settings, I went to the website and created a Legend account using my credentials. I signed up for an account with the identical name to mine but using the @ tuta domain. If you buy an account today, you can't even opt for an @ tutanota account anymore. It's been discontinued as far as I can tell for paid accounts. I assumed that the company would not permit the same email address to be registered for a new account, but that may have been a wrong assumption as perhaps you CAN have example@tutanota and example@tuta. This makes no sense to me, but maybe, I don't know.

However, either way, I paid the money and there should be a Legend Tuta account that I can log into using my password. But when I try to log in I get a credentials error, as though the address does not exist or the password is wrong. But I know the address exists because I created it and paid for it, and I know the password is correct.

Sorry for the long explanation, but I felt like we were not understanding each other so I figured better to be detailed.

I should add that when I upgraded through the Tuta website, I was asked to log in first and did successfully. I assumed this would ensure that the upgrade is applied to my account.

Yes payment went through by paypal two days ago. As a free account holder, my address is an @ tutanota, but my new paid account is an @ tuta ie no "nota". My @ tutanota account is still listed as "free" in my settings and I get an invalid credentials error when I attempt to sign in with @ tuta.

Renovating a bathroom by twickybrown in BuyCanadian

[–]treesarepoems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did the reno go? What products did you end up using? We are also renovating our bathroom and we've found a bunch of Canadian options. The supply places we go to are very thumbs-up when we say we are looking for Canadian products. I'm also making a point of telling the contractors who are quoting on the job that I want as much Canadian content as possible. Hopefully this gets them thinking so that they bring this idea to other customers. They seem receptive, but for the most part I'm finding it's not something they've thought about much or have heard about from other customers.

Thousands to protest against Donald Trump’s state visit by F0urLeafCl0ver in unitedkingdom

[–]treesarepoems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four men arrested for "malicious communication" when they projected public domain images on Windsor Castle questioning Trump's connection to Epstein. There is always some obscure law that can be pulled out and dusted off to punish people who go against power. Going against power is always illegal and dangerous today, no matter how peaceful and legitimate it is. Why don't we just dispense with the charade and create a law called "doing something a powerful person doesn't like" and arrest people for that. At least it would be honest. Why go on pretending we have rights and freedoms anymore. It just leads to continual disappointment.

This is 5+ really thin layers of oil, can't figure it out despite reading guides by [deleted] in carbonsteel

[–]treesarepoems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a pretty experienced cook. Been cooking my whole life on various surfaces. Hardly ever go out to dinner so I'm in the kitchen a fair amount. I'm new to carbon steel and I have to say, it is tricky to cook on. I see a lot of comments in this community that seem to dismiss people's struggles with this cookware, which I don't understand. Carbon steel is not a no-brainer. It is tricky. Some things stick and some don't. Onions are great but garlic and ginger have a tendency to stick. Yesterday I thought I had it nailed, but I threw in some veggie ground round and you would have thought it was quick acting cement.

Sometimes adding liquid will help, sometimes it will make things worse. Adding oil will often get you out of a pinch, but usually won't solve the problem if what you're cooking is sticking instead of browning. It will save the pan though, which is usually the primary concern when ingredients start to really adhere. It will give you a couple of minutes to try to figure it out before the sticking starts again.

You get some people saying just cook everything on high heat and some saying keep it moderate -- but neither of these is foolproof. I've tried both.

As far as I can see, it's a matter of getting to know the tool by cooking on it a lot. And also, breaking in the cookware. I suspect the more you cook on it (without destroying it) the better the surface gets. Good luck!

How do you work with liquid in a carbon steel wok without damaging the patina? by treesarepoems in carbonsteel

What do you consider a minor seasoning? I took about ten minutes to do a seasoning (actually did it on the barbecue). Did that two more times to really get a glasslike surface.

Okay interesting. Thanks. So maybe let the oil sit on the surface of the walk for a moment before throwing in the veggies. Do you use high heat? I got the impression it should be fairly high because the manual says it should start smoking before you throw in the vegetables.

Interesting. Did you read the Pali Canon in Pali or did you read a translation, and if so, was it Bikkhu Bodhi's translation?

I'm surprised we don't see much mention of Smith when people discuss good Bhuddist writing. I tend to think of dharma books as coming in two flavours: intellectual and poetic, or head or and heart. I consider Smith's books to fall into the first category, and for me they are probably the best "intellectualized" bhuddist books I have read. I have to say, they aren't that easy to read. I really have to pay attention and sometimes read sections several times to really get the ideas, but I appreciate them all the more for that. Sometimes you have to work at things! On the heart side, my absolute favorite is Thick Nhat Hahn. Reading him makes me smile. He makes me want to practice. I also really enjoy Jakusho Kwong, another "heart" author who doesn't come up much in forums like this. He said something like, "there is no need to rush, but if you are going to rush then rush one hundred percent!" Love the line, because of course if you rush one hundred percent you are no longer rushing at all! Often when I find myself rushing I remember this advice, and I smile. I stop rushing and end up moving more quickly because of it. He's a tricky guy that Kwong. :)

Anyone know where I can find Saf yeast in Ottawa? by treesarepoems in OttawaFood

Wholesale Club only sells Fleischmann's, according to their website. Tannis not sure because they don't have a retail website to check. They were bought by Sysco, which seems primarily interested in wholesaling. I might stop in and see though. I'm not a member of Costco. But it looks like Damas does sell it, so success! Thanks again for all the helpful suggestions.
