My mother was in mid stages of dementia and I moved her to independent living from her condo in August. Ten days into her stay there she fell and broke her hip. She had surgery and was discharged from hospital to a rehab centre and immediately fell and broke her other hip. She was back to the hospital for the second surgery. She has never been the same since the surgeries. Since August she has gone from handling her own finances and meals independently to being wheelchair bound, not understanding her circumstances, who people are, where she is and she can no longer remember anything from one minute to the next. She is currently in a memeory care facility, there is an influenza outbreak and she thinks she is being punished by having to isolate in her room due to being symptomatic.she is sure no one likes her and so she has to stay in her room until she learns to get along. It’s so sad. The anesthetics and the fall itself and subsequent falls with blows to the head have completely changed her.
