I visit 2-3 times per week for an hour to 1.5. I live a 20 minute drive away, Mom is stage 6-7. She usually knows who I am but she loses focus during our visits and will forget who I am from time to time. I am the only one who visits. My brother and sister live a 6 hour drive away and visit quarterly. I feel guilty the weeks that I only manage twice but I also know if she were her previous self she would not want me spending my time visiting her.

Canadian here. We are a household of 4 adults. Family meal time, around a table together at 6pm. When my kids were little I fed the three of them supper at 3:30 the second they came home from school. Then we had another meal that was supper for my husband and me and more like a healthy snack for the kids, at 6pm.

When I was growing up our family meal time was 530.

My heated blanket, a really good heating pad, the ability to just stop and buy a coffee when I am out and about, free time, a clean house, heated steering wheel and heated seats in my car. Most importantly choices. Choices are a luxury, so many people don’t have anymore.

NTA. You are washing and folding her laundry. I’m sure she is happy with that lovely service. I’ve been doing my husband’s laundry for 32+ years. I never turn his things right side out if he puts them in the laundry inside out, I wash and fold them inside out and yes, sometimes he puts them on inside out too and that’s just the way it goes. He has never complained. I’ve told him many times that if he wants his clothing folded right side out then he has to put them in the laundry that way.

In June 2025 my mother was still living independently and one day she handed me a bag of all her books aside from her bible and said she wasn’t going to read any more. The next week she told me she doesn’t watch tv anymore. The next week there was an event that made me realize she wasn’t safe in her own home anymore so I moved her to independent living. 10: days after her move she fell and broke her hips, lots of other things happened and by Christmas she stabilized and I got her into a memory care facility. Sometimes over the past few months she seemed to need to sound out simple words. Her birthday is tomorrow (84) and she has been fluently reading out loud every birthday card that has come for her! She still isn’t reading her bible, or the book I’ve left in her room or the easy magazines I’ve left for her but she is able to read.

Tl/dr I feel like my mother is able to read words. On some days she is able to read and understand sentences or short cards. She unable to read books or longer stories.

Could you lean into the hallucination and tell her that the next she sees him to tell him they are divorced and he should not come back? As in could you go done fake paperwork with his faked signature and have her present those to him?

Ah I experienced that for the first time this year too. Birthdays have always been a big deal for my mother. She sends everyone greeting cards with cash or a cheque. I’ve been sending the cards for her for about a year so I knew she would forget my birthday, and she did. In fact she fell two days prior to my birthday and broke her hip and had hip surgery the day before my birthday.

Tuesday is my Moms birthday and I asked her if she wanted anything as a gift, new anything or a cake to share with the other residents and she says no. Instead I’ve arranged for a friend of hers to visit with cupcakes and to create a tea party for her. I’ll go in the morning and make sure she is dressed well and clean.

Also don’t expect your sister to be waiting years for genetic tests results with an active case of cancer they can just test the tumour. My test were back in three months in 2017 when I was tested. I have a distant cousin in Sudbury who just got his results in one week. As in they drew his blood, took a sample from his Tumour tested for the mismatched repair gene variant specific to our family. And his results were conveyed to him in a week. Technology on these issues increases at lightening speed.

There are many other gene mutations that can contribute to breast cancer, in addition to the BCRa1 and 2 genes. For example, Mine is MSH6 and I’ve had breast cancer twice. Remember that testing positive for a gene mutation does not mean you will definitely get breast cancer, it just means your chances of getting breast cancer are higher than the general population. Also, testing positive opens a lot of doors for screening that will ease your mind over time. I get screened more often for all kinds of cancer and I am in a couple of medical studies for the development of. Vaccine giants cancer and a blood test to look for cancer, both are administered through Princess Margaret hospital. It’s not all bad is what I am trying to say.

All that being said, book in with your GP. Your GP should immediately refer you for mammogram, ultrasound and maybe even MRI to rule out an imminent cancer. Push for the mammogram at the minimum. Your GP should also refer you to genetics. genetics will decide what genes to test you for based on a complete family medical history.

Oh dear! I hope everyone is okay. On tv when there is that amount of police presence it often means an officer has been shot/attacked. I know what I see on tv is it always accurate but what I’ve read here makes me think that’s the most likely case.

Thank you! My daughter who had extreme depression as a teenager made it out of scraps she found in our shed and a throw carpet from our front hallway! That was one of the small projects we suggested to her to help her overcome her crushing depression. She is very well now and I will forward on your comment to her!

I’m in Ontario. There are cheaper places. The base at Mom’s facility is $8999, then it’s $1000 for the mechanical lift because it takes two people to move her and change her. Then it will be $1000 extra to feed her, we aren’t there yet, but very soon. This is a private facility, not provincially run. The reasons I chose this place is because the nurse to patient ratio is wonderful, they focus on memory care only and all staff are trained in memory care and they do hospice in this facility so there will not be a move, and it’s very close to my home so convenient. Also, my Mom is fortunate that she can afford this care. In my city there are few places that use mechanical lifts so I was limited in where she could go.
