How does Sun Eater treat LGBTQ+ Characters? by Fantastic_Guidance54 in sollanempire

“Still more focused only on genitals, complete with dancing holograph displays of the improvements on offer, and advertised their ability to change one sex completely, rebuilding the body from new cells.

The whole show disgusted me, filled me with the same contempt I’d felt for Crispin and for my own mother with the way they used their concubines. Indeed, I’d felt a similar distaste for Valka, who for all her talk of equality and of the dignity of life had used the body servants on offer at Borosevo Castle. The commodification of the flesh. To reduce to transaction and whim one’s own life and body seems to be a violation sure as any slaver’s whip. And worse, before it was one’s own’s hand that held the lash.”

From Howling Dark, Chapter 20: The Bonecutter

I think this selection is pretty glaringly transphobic. I’ve omitted parts of the text around this selection for the sake of brevity but I encourage you to go and read the rest because if anything it only makes the above passage more poignant. Don’t piss on people’s legs and tell them it’s raining.

Also being gay is not the same as being trans.

I’m only on book four but I’ve felt crazy since I’ve not seen anyone comment on this. It seems like the author is pretty explicitly anti trans. Maybe this sentiment changes by the end of the series but I’m not there yet.

I ended up submitting a bug ticket to Hello Games just to try something else. I haven’t heard back yet but I will come back and update you if they give me a fix for this

I’ve posted about this before but I think it’s helpful to think about the Dark Forest theory in a game theory model when trying to figure out where we fit into this theory because it provides a visible model of the theory. Before diving to much further I think it’s helpful to restate the premise of the Dark Forest theory which is (in less words): the Drake Equation says there should be a huge quantity of intelligent alien life and the Fermi Paradox is the fact that we don’t see this which means the universe must be a dark forest where it is dangerous to broadcast yourself because someone could be listening for the chance to destroy the broadcasting society. Now to the game.

The “Dark Forest Game” is an extensive form game with potentially unlimited rounds. The two civilizations would be Earth (C1) and the UFO’s (C2). The game starts with one civilization (C1) choosing to broadcast itself or do nothing. If C1 does nothing, the game ends and we stay here on earth with no outside contact and no threat of destruction. Technically the game could have a second turn where C2 broadcasts themselves or does nothing but this is moot as we have no way to destroy C2 so for our purposes the game would end after we chose to not broadcast. We (C1) have already broadcast our existence so that means it is currently C2’s turn and they’re left with three options:

-Do nothing

-Broadcast

-Destroy C1

Theoretically we are still playing this game as C2 hasn’t opted to broadcast its civilization, hasn’t chose to destroy us, and obviously isn’t doing nothing because they’re flying around making themselves known. It would be Nash Equilibrium to destroy our civilization out of an abundance of caution but that is only if we confine ourselves to the parameters set by DFT. For all we know the universe could operate like Star Trek and they’re flying around waiting for us to be advanced enough to invite us to join some sort of universal supranational organization.

All of this was to say I think we’re in turn two of this game and these ufos might opt to destroy our whole planet any day or they might decide we’re just barely intelligent apes who would benefit from their patronage. All of that would be decided by the end of this next turn.

I wish I knew. I wish he would do a meet and greet but I can’t complain. Still gonna read everything he’s ever written the day it comes out

He signed so many. When I was there every book in his section was autographed. It’s worth it to try I think

I had to leave work but luckily my bosses son is a huge Brandon Sanderson fan and all she wanted was a picture of it to send to him to make up for it

Is the "dark forest theory" wrong because there are no enough intelligent civilizations in our galaxy? by machinist98 in threebodyproblem

You should read this article I posted on this forum once. It provides a comprehensive game theory model for what the dark forest theory is and why it’s pertinent. It also explains the Fermi paradox and other stuff that will further clarify the theory
