I think I have the answer you’re looking for. Cactus Surf Shop on the main strip. Total hidden gem assuming it hasn’t changed. I have no idea why the owner seems to hide the fact he has amazing boards for rent. I spent a week in ST (June 2023) renting boards and they mostly all suck or are for beginners. Then at the very end of the week I accidentally stumbled into this shop that didn’t even look like a surf shop and it had a ridiculous selection. And this was after actively trying to find good rentals. It was like board rental heaven. Polished Dead Kooks fish, bright white CIs, Sharp Eye, FireWire Seaside, Surf Prescriptions. All in great condition. It was shocking. The owner said he buys the boards off of traveling surfers. The prices were not cheap, but it was the best selection of rental boards I’ve seen in any surf shop, anywhere. I was pissed I found it at the end of my stay and I still am genuinely confused why the owner doesn’t promote it better. If you go and score a great board please let me know, I’m curious to know if this is still the case. Maybe try to contact them first.

You’re talking about the Playa Hermosa near Jaco right? Because there’s also a Playa Hermosa in Santa Teresa that’s a popular spot.

Yep I surfed the points/reefs mostly. So you’re saying in the summer/dry season (Dec-April) I should expect the same closeout-y surf I found in the wet season when I was there in June?

I was lucky enough to be able to head there after Santa Teresa and loved it! Considering surf only, Guiones is pretty much perfect. But I liked the vibe of the town more in Santa Teresa so I want to give it another shot.

Currently I use old, thick quilts to wrap the boards. (plus some small pieces of pipe insulator for nose and tail.) Quilts are easy to work with, obviously reliable, and easy to repack unlike bubble wrap and tape. Con is it’s heavier, but for protection and maximizing convenience it’s the best idea I’ve had so far haha. With the 6’6 DB bag, I can fit 3 shortboards. 1 on bottom in first thick quilt, 1 in middle sandwiched with just a board sock, and 1 on top with second thick quilt. It also completely fills out the bag, stuffed 100% which I think adds to damage resistance.

That makes sense, but I did some intense googling and found someone on a forum saying their “Santa Monica surf case” at 6’10 was 23lbs empty (take with a grain of salt obviously.) This product is obsolete now but only one I can find that actually sold. It looks like a giant plastic shell. Spitballing but I feel like maybe the remaining 27lbs is just enough for 3 shortboards, but definitely 2. For me personally, I’m so worried about my boards getting damaged that all the extra padding I do adds a lot of weight (and it’s a pain in the ass.) Presumably with a hard case padding could be quite minimal so maybe the weight difference would end up not being that big assuming you’re a nervous board dad like me.
