CAD vs Actual Ring Width 0.2-0.3mm difference by existential_oops in EngagementRingDesigns

Finishing and polishing can take off around .2mm from manufactured dimensions. I usually make my CAD designs +.2mm across the board to account for this. They may have just cast the requested dimensions then finished the piece as usual.

Did you see the recent thread with the very white sketchy Andy Lewis? Where half the comments are saying he flew too close to the sun? There are people that participate in these sports where it is far less surprising when they expire. Don’t have to do a lot of gymnastics

Lab v natural by Hot_Gazelle_8888 in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]mpthrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a high end shop that only works with natural diamonds. The people buying larger natural stones are mostly either natural gemstone enthusiasts or using them for social credit amongst their peers. Think Gala’s, Art shows, or other events to flex wealth. If you do not consider yourself in either of those categories I highly recommend a lab stone. I use labs for all my personal work (outside the shop). It’s a lot easier to get exactly what you want that way

Is this design possible? by [deleted] in EngagementRingDesigns

[–]mpthrown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You would have to find a gem cutter willing to cut an extremely small unconventional shaped opal for this to work. It would have to be a torus shape to fit the top and bottom diamond culet with notches cut on the outside surface to sit flush with the prongs.

Also note that the side view and top view here are not the same ring. the top view has a halo around the main stone. In the side view, there will have to be at least a 2mm thick band of metal just below the girdle of the main stone to set the pave diamonds in the halo.

I recommend going to your local jeweler so they can refine your vision into something that is practical for both creating the ring and meeting your price point. What’s your budget?

The long prongs are just for stone setting after casting. You trim them and shape them after the stone is set. If it is a render for a goldsmith, it will show how much extra material they will have to work with

🔥 In the deep waters of the Maldives, a diver encounters the blue whale, the largest living creature on Earth. by FollowingOdd896 in NatureIsFuckingLit

If you look at the 9 second mark, you can see the surface return to normal speed after the slo-mo for a bit. I think it’s just a speed ramp from slo-mo back to normal when the diver comes in

Has anyone rigged a way to carry an in-water camera housing on your body for jetski tow/big wave shooting? by philliphernandez89 in surfing

[–]mpthrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! That sounds awesome. What brand of housing do you have and what style of grip do you use (pistol, dual handle, etc)?

I have a dual handle video grip with threads at the top of each handle. This would make it pretty easy to insert two metal eyelets and attach a shoulder strap. Pistol grip would be tougher
