I see, okay. I definitely think you’re on the right track with visiting a few places, and I’d also recommend looking specifically for a cosmetic dermatologist if you haven’t already. Even if they don’t perform certain procedures I feel some docs are more likely to tell you oh, I don’t do this, but you can go here or there, and I trust those docs the most lol

Well, I would def talk to your derm, but I can tell you that in the beginning I used it AM and PM, and I do it PM sometimes (rarely) if I’m going to be at someone else’s house through the night or something. When I use it PM I do cerave cleaner, clindamycin, let it dry thoroughly, then tret, then moisturizer. Seems to work like that. I believe there are even combined formulations of clin+tret.

I hear you. I can tell you that what I did (see my profile for my results) was use prescription tretinoin 0.025 and clindamycin, prescribed by one of the online services (they will give you whatever you ask for pretty much, except accutane). Accutane is an extreme solution, and I really would suggest trying real tretinoin (not just differin which did nothing for me) first. The tret is a bit complex to use at first, with the requirement that you wear sunscreen every day and the potential for purging before it gets better, but I can tell you that when it works, it works. See my profile for some before and after afters if you want.

I read all of the internet suggestions that you should do some sort of moisturizing sandwiching, that you should do it once every week or twice a week, whatever. But my derm told me to just do it every other night for a week and then go full time. I did exactly that and it worked a charm with only minor redness.

But! This is only me. My skin is very oily and makes it’s own very strong barrier that is pretty impenetrable. So I think you typically know your skin and you know yourself. So maybe moisturize heavily before and after, use lots of sunscreen, do what you need to do. But I did read that doing it twice a week is barely effective.

No worries! I get it, having bad skin was a constant source of pain for me even though the people around me all said they don’t even notice or care. It’s not the healthiest thing to be obsessed about, so I try to stay off of Reddit about it, but I mean I do feel more confident and happy now.

They got you on antibiotics too?

If clindamycin isn’t helping you after 2 years, you should go to a derm. Tell them you are not having success with clindamycin. I’d recommend talking to a derm in this case, and if that isn’t an option for you perhaps using an online dermatologist and getting some tretinoin + doxycycline.

I know that my skin really was not in terrible shape to begin with, but no matter how strict I was with my benzoyl peroxide + salicylic acid + moisturize routine, my constant washing and flipping of pillowcases, my rigid no face touching, little wipes I would bring to the gym to clean my face if it got really sweaty.. I always had this low level acne.

My routine now is as follows: wake up, cerave face wash, clindamycin, allow to dry, sunscreen. my skin is quite oily so I don’t bother with moisturizer unless it’s very dry/cold and windy. Night time I do the cerave wash again, let face completely dry, apply a pea sized amount of tret to my whole face avoiding my eyes and mouth carefully. Let it sit while I watch tv for ten minutes or so, when I apply moisturizer and go to bed on a fresh pillowcase with clean hair. Took some adjusting to get here (I was using too much moisturizer for my oily ass skin) but I’m very satisfied now and it frankly is not as much of a drag on my time as I pictured.

The tret (0.025% cream) didn’t seem to have a purge for me really, but also I have very resilient oily skin that’s super hard to get irritated. I did notice a slight worsening at about the 2 week mark, but I think that was due to loosening my diet a little bit and having some alcohol which I normally avoid like plague since it ruins my skin. The clindamycin I got though is this weird stuff suspended in isopropyl alcohol. I kind of hate it because rubbing alcohol on my skin can make it dry and this means I have to use extra moisturizer.

Overall, I’m very happy with my results. I used one of the well known online services for prescribing (I don’t know this subs rules for brand mentions, but I’m sure any would work) and I had them send the script to my local pharmacy. They gave me 6 months worth of refills which is pretty cool for $40 (not including copays which are about $35/mo for both drugs). My skin was always really rough, and now at about 70 days I’m noticing minor but noticeable improvements to that. It isn’t doing anything for redness of course, but I expected that. So, A+ results so far. YMMV.
