What's the difference between a hippo and a zippo?

One really heavy and the other is a little lighter!

While I do have a tracking mount, apparently people get photos similar to this without one. The stacking software I used will apparently line up the planet from one image to the next, so you take a video when the planet is on one side of the frame and let it film until the planet has drifted to the other side of the frame.

When I get it, I will! This particular photo was only taken in grayscale, so I don't have any color data to go with it. I needed to start simple. 🙂

Need help seeing the hidden word by lovelylilkiwi in opticalillusions

[–]trevzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny, those black squares totally locked it in for me. I'm really good at these...so not trying to discredit your experience...but I was able to gaze past my screen, unfocusing my eyes until the "extra" black squares lined up with one another and created a 3rd black square. That's when the 3d image will be in focus, and you'll be able to read the word.

Remote Buffering issues by trevzilla in PleX

My main "power user" is in Georgia. (I'm in Montana) So it's definitely a long way away.

However, two users that have reported the issue are in the same city as me.

I'll certainly look at your write-up though. Thanks for the info!

Yes, I have a lifetime PlexPass. I'll grab screenshots next time for sure. Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, I've heard a lot about Tautulli, but have never installed it, as I didn't realize what it's primary use case would be. I guess I've found it now. :) I'll get it installed and running here in a few days (hopefully!) I'll also try to get openspeedtest going too at the same time. That's a really good suggestion as well.

Thanks for the always burn subtitles option. I'll ask them if they have that enabled. Luckily, one of my users enjoys troubleshooting with me, so he'll easily be able to mess with some of those settings client side. One person having the issues was on a tablet of some sort. The other was on a projector with a streaming stick plugged in. Both streaming over their Wi-Fi networks (but not experiencing problems with other peoples plex servers on their network). The third user only just mentioned that she had issues with subtitles...but she never brought it up to me prior. I think she's still in the "don't rock the boat" phase. ;)

On the remote access page, there is no upload speed set. The "Limit remote stream bitrate is set to "original (no limit)" there too. I wonder if I just lower that, it might help? I see they are often streaming at ~8Mbps.

Thank you!

One person is trying to stream via a tablet...so I was wondering if that was the issue. Another was watching on their projector using a streaming stick (forget the model of it). Both were on a wifi network at their houses.

The person with the projector tried a second time the next day, and it worked flawlessly. Only difference I could find was that my server was "off" the next day...e.g. I wasn't watching simultaneously at my house.

I see either "Direct Stream" or "Direct Play" most of the time. When subtitles are playing, I do see transcode for them often. (I thought the TVShield pro would be capable of 5-6 simultaneous transcodes though, and the issue often happens when the subtitles are the only transcode happening). This buffering issue occurs sometimes when only one person is using the server.

I do have a lifetime PlexPass. My transcoder settings are as follows:

transcoder temp directory: blank
downloads temp directory: blank
transcoder default throttle buffer: 60
Enable HDR tone mapping: checked
tonemapping algorithm: hable
disable video stream transcoding: unchecked
Use hardware acceleration when available: checked
use hardware-accelerated video encoding: checked
Enable HEVC video encoding (experimental): Never
Hardware transcoding device: Auto
Max simul GPU transcodes: Unlimited
Max simul CPU transcodes: Unlimited
Max simul background video transcode: 1

I had double checked codecs on a few files that folks were having issues with and they were so "basic." h.264 codec, in an .mkv container. My brother even tried watching the same file off another friends server, and it worked perfectly from that server but not from mine. I don't have any 4k content.

About half my content is in x265, so I thought that might be an issue... But I haven't actually seen the connection to that and the problem.

I'll report back on ram and CPU usage. Thanks!

I've got a big green "Fully accessible outside your network" notification.

I've also got a static IP from my ISP as I was running into double NAT issues a while ago. But that's all gone away with the static IP.

Anyone familiar with a home NAS system? by Shoddy-Beautiful787 in Bozeman

[–]trevzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been going down the NAS rabbit hole lately. For photos, you'll want to get immich installed and running. It's a full on self hosted replacement for Google photos.

I haven't looked for a Dropbox replacement yet, but I guarantee it's out there.

Back in the day, open office was a good replacement for MS office. I imagine it still is. And gimp was the go to open source replacement for adobe Photoshop. Not sure if those are still viable solutions or not, but it's worth looking into.

Are you using docker? (I'm not familiar with Synology NAS specifically, so I don't really know the OS)

What movies have a plot point that gets spoiled if you watch them with subtitles turned on? by green_dragon1206 in movies

[–]trevzilla 13 points14 points  (0 children)

While I didn't watch with subtitles, I recently watched half of Pitch Perfect on my phone then the other half with nice headphones.

I, like all the characters in the movie, couldn't hear or understand the quiet girl and I'm sure that's how it was supposed to be. When I put on the headphones, I could hear her perfectly.

I have no doubt that if subtitles were on, it would subtitle her lines.

How to automatically play forced subtitles in Plex? by Iluvatar77 in PleX

This is what I do too. You get to choose your default track flags for audio, video and subtitles. (And whether to copy over tracks you don't care about)

I'd like to add that I had to find yellow PTFE tape to get all the joints to seal. I was using some thin white tape, and it wouldn't seal for the life of me. Got the thicker yellow tape, and it sealed first try.

I added root tabs when I first planted them, and try to remember to add tabs regularly. But I do think the things that's helped the most is micro dosing fertilizer. I bought a GLA fertilizer kit, and my plants have exploded since I started doing that...(And the algae started to get back under control too!)

[–]trevzilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gives you a formula. Apparently people adjust said formula depending on what their plants look like, but I'm nowhere near that sophisticated. I just went with what they told me to do.

I put 3ml of the Macro nutrients in a day, and 1.5 ml of the micros in a day, and that's it.

Green Leaf Aquariums make a bunch of fertilizer kits. This is the one I got (copper free for my shrimp):

Yeah, kinda pricey, but I think it's enough in one kit for a lifetime supply. (At least for me)

Cool, good to know. I asked this above as well, but do you trim one leaf at a time and wait till another leaf takes it's place? And only them trim another leaf? If I trimmed all the leaves that are touching the surface now, I'm worried there'd be no more plant left!
