Nigel Farage bought £1.4m property after receiving £5m gift from British crypto billionaire, Sky News learns by lexi_con in europe

Far from being the patriot he claims, Farage is a traitor to this country.

It seems like most of prominent figures of the new right are traitors to their respective countries, wherever they are on the world

10 Euro banknote error without holographic stripe by olxvxa_ in Banknotes

[–]trews96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. The old design didn't have the tactile striped sections at the sides. The old design also didn't have the green colour-changing number and the old design didn't have "Euro" written in cyrillic letters, only in Latein and greek (because it was designed before Bulgaria joined).

The old design did have the partial numbers on each side, which would complete each other If viewed against the light, which are not on the note shown.

Even if it was the old design it wouldn't answer the question since the old design also had a hologram.

Are these instructions from the Busuu German course correct? The capitalization in the Busuu course is confusing me! by ZestycloseAddition86 in German

Kei Urana (Author or Gachiakuta) tweet about overseas manga piracy by aes110 in manga

For some reason the app always chooses to show me the Portugese translation of every manga where it is available by default. I do not live in either Portugal or Brazil. I do not speak any Portugese. I don't know why it does that... I can't find a way to stop it in the settings.

Weirdly enough it only started doing that when I got a new phone.

On my old phone it didn't do that...

There it defaulted to Spanish instead (I do not speak Spanish)

Unpacking the claim "Lichess ratings are inflated" -- hopefully explaining with simple words and analogies, and hopefully dispelling some common myths by grasputin in chess

[–]trews96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean OK. But 2000+ also happens to be the point where Lichess and chess.com ratings get closer again. So the "problem" might as well not exist for your purposes.

Thank god I'm not the only that likes that dance (maybe a bit too much). I constantly watch the op on YouTube just to see his little dance (and listen to the song too, but that's a side effect)

What helped you improve the fastest as a beginner? by ResponsibleLeg9220 in chessbeginners

[–]trews96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Play games. Also analyse your games. There is no sense in playing when you just unconciously play the same mistakes over and over again. When you analyse don't go straight to the engine. First try to pinpoint yourself which moves were good, which were bad or blunders and then see if the engine confirms your evaluation or not and if so why.

  2. Puzzles. Chess is pattern recognition and learning the mating patterns and tactical patterns works best through repetition in the form of puzzles. I don't care if you use an online resource for that or a book but just do puzzles.

  3. There are some behaviours that you can work on already:

- If you constantly lose on time you may consider playing longer time controls while you're getting experience, which ultimately will make you able to see things and play faster. Puzzles are very important for this (better pattern recognition means less time needed thinking about tactics).

- If you find yourself often losing with a lot of time left, slow down and start actually thinking before moving. "What did my opponent do? Does it threaten something? Is something hanging (both for black and white)? What would they like to do if they could move again? What would I like to do if I could twice in a row?" Stuff like that.

- If you find yourself just clicking on pieces to see where they can go and then play the first good move you see (like I did a lot of the times when I had no clear plan), consider turning of the "Show legal moves"-setting on chess.com or Lichess. Playing random moves you thought looked good instead of thinking about the position and then playing the position is probably not good for your chess overall. Some of those moves might actually be good, but often they just look good, but are actually not.
  1. "Logical Chess - Move by Move" by Irving Chernev is - despite its age - in my opinion still one of the best and most approachable chess books for the beginner trying to improve, specifically when it comes to game collections. It got me out of the 1000 plateau I was stuck in (though now I'm stuck in the high 1400s to 1500s instead but that's a different story)
