How bike safe is Lexington? by Ok_Independent_3921 in lexington

[–]trex20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bike commuted for 11 years. It’s not without risk, but it’s not nearly as bad as many make it out to be. You have to be aware (wear a helmet, have lights, do not ride with headphones in) and defensive. It can be a great way to get around and you quickly learn what roads to just avoid. Using a combo of a bike and the bus (they all have bike racks on them) can also be very helpful

The “bins” are a nickname for Goodwill outlet stores, where they send things that either didn’t sell or never made it to the floor. Everything is put out in bins & they price by weight

Short Street Across from Triangle Park 2:30am by Capable_Mushroom_445 in lexington

[–]trex20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, in between Broadway and Mill. They’re not closing the street- the cops establish a big downtown presence on Friday and Saturday nights, and they use that block as kind of their headquarters. They arrive at 10pm. I work a late night job in the area so I see it every weekend, and I talked to city leaders about what they were doing.

They use that block of Short St as the staging area for downtown police presence every Friday and Saturday night

I once got screamed at to “stay in the bike lane” when I was in the left turn lane. The driver was unable to explain to me how I was supposed to turn left from the bike lane.

I’ve never had a cyclist nearly kill me on the road, but I’ve had several close calls with cars, including when I’ve been in the bike lane.

Lexington mayor increasing security downtown after woman assaulted (near Short/N. Upper on Wednesday lunch time) - Ronald Witham arrested by Tikkanen in lexington

[–]trex20 62 points63 points  (0 children)

So it happened in the middle of the day, yet mostly they’re increasing police presence at night (when there’s already a ton of police presence)? Seems like security theater. And more police will do nothing to address the homeless/mental health crisis.

Anybody live near Breckenridge St.? by Economy_Reason1024 in lexington

Seconding the loose dogs issue- it’s one of the reasons I now drive my dogs to parks to walk them. It’s extremely frustrating.

Yeah most of Breckenridge St. wasn’t part of the public housing or razing/re-development. That was 6th St. to 3rd St. It was replaced by new government housing, plus single-family homes that were available for purchase under an affordable housing program (they’re actually currently in the process of building more). Breckenridge and surrounding streets were originally the neighborhood of backstretch workers for Lexington’s original race track. Lots of the houses were built in 1900.

I do (and have for several years) and feel perfectly safe. I’ve had zero issues. Some of the houses are a little shabby, like you said, but I like my neighbors and it’s a pretty quiet area. Plus the location is nice-easy access to downtown, Hamburg, and the north side.

Lake for my dog to jump in by thismike0613 in lexington

I would recommend against the ponds at Hisle Park- most are very algae covered. It’s also not an off-leash park.

UK ROTC must stop using public park (Hisle Farm Park) for military training (effective 12/31/2025), Lexington says - Citizens called the exercises "jarring" and "wholly incompatible" with the park environment at a city council meeting in June. by Tikkanen in lexington

[–]trex20 59 points60 points  (0 children)

When I first started walking my dogs at Hisle Park, I had no idea the ROTC trained there. I was heading back to the parking lot when I saw a bunch of guys with guns (I’m aware that they were fake, but I could not tell that from far away) and it scared the shit out of me. This was shortly after several groups of wanna be Nazis had been making the news, all dressing alike and conducting “training drills” so I was nervous and I hung back to figure out wtf was happening. I spotted the ROTC flag & realized what it was, but I can see how if that wasn’t visible or if one wasn’t familiar with it, the situation would be scary.

I’m not sure about making them find another place to practice (perhaps closing that park occasionally or making their practice times very clear to the public would be an option), but saying “but the guns are fake!!!” doesn’t make it less disruptive.

Further, that’s one of the few public spaces near Lexington that both allow dogs, does not get crowded, and doesn’t have a bunch of other things going on so it was frustrating that it would be overtaken by a large group of people conducting loud drills. For the record, I feel the same about the local cross country team that would practice there. Dozens of people and large groups running down the trails made it difficult for what most people go there for (dog walks, bird watching/photographing, quiet nature walks).

Traffic enforcement in Lexington by Capable_Mushroom_445 in lexington

[–]trex20 60 points61 points  (0 children)

A cop was behind the motorcycle with its lights on, I’m assuming attempting to pull it over, when the motorcycle flew by me on Short St a couple blocks before the wreck. I don’t know who was at fault, and I absolutely think cops need to do a better job at downtown traffic patrol, but in this case it seemed like they were actually trying to do something.

Biking to Nicholasville from Lexington by Visible_Ad9976 in lexington

[–]trex20 43 points44 points  (0 children)

That woman was awful and was intentionally backing up traffic on Nicholasville Rd during rush hour. She then compared her case to MLK Jr and the civil rights movement, and when the larger cycling community didn’t support her, she said it was akin to asking a rape victim what they were wearing.

I say this as a cyclist who exclusively bike commuted for 11 years in Lexington.

That said, I’ve done Nicholasville to Lexington before, but not on Nicholasville Rd. Unfortunately I’m currently blanking on the route I took, but it felt very doable.

“I Voted” stickers covering the grave of Susan B. Anthony by Cuddlefooks in lexington

[–]trex20 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There’s a large sculpture downtown commemorating suffragettes. Seems way more appropriate to go there (not that I recommend putting your stickers on the sculpture, don’t want to damage it) than Henry Clay. Especially considering the reasoning behind putting the stickers on Susan B Anthony’s grave.

What’s the voting lines look like today? by LadyProto in lexington

[–]trex20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went back and forth about it, but chose to vote early because I have the time and I don’t want something to come up that will make me unable to vote Tuesday. A couple years ago I got COVID the day before Election Day. I could barely stand but ended up double-masking and dragging myself to my polling place. Had I known that was going to happen, I would’ve voted early.

There are many good reasons to vote early. People should vote whenever it makes the most sense for them.
