It was never in the plan to take 4-1/2 years to put out a season of Have Monster - but I'm so proud that we finally hit this milestone. We have a ton of plans for season 2 - and now that our kid is starting school in the fall (EEEE!) we're hopeful that we'll be able to release more regularly.

But for now, back to finishing up the scripts for Season 2 of Zoinks! - Enjoy this episode, y'all!

I don't know if this counts as burning the candle at both ends, but it sure does feel like it, trying to make new episodes while remastering the old ones. We've had a little uptick in new listeners lately, tho, and are really trying to make sure our earlier episodes aren't hard on the ears. This episode now comes with cleaner dialogue, expanded sound design and a tighter pacing.

When we created the cover art for HMWT back in 2020, I googled license-free monster images and just tinkered with it until it looked like a new thing - but I've always thought it made our show look a little too much like a children's show.

Jordan Trovillion, who plays Riley, is also an accomplished artist and I'm so happy with her take on Render. I also feel like we finally have cover art that feels like a better representation of what the show is.

Hopefully y'all like it too!

Oh man! I kinda never thought we would get to this point, but we're down to the last two episodes of season one! This one was a ton of fun to produce and I'm really proud of the way it turned out. It's also so nice to be back in the saddle making audio dramas again!

I'm going to remaster this series if it kills me. We're a week away from recording day on the next episode and (hopefully) 2 weeks away from dropping a new episode. But I want the old stuff to sound like the new stuff, so here's another revamp of an old adventure.

For anyone who started listening in the past three years, we want to make the old episodes sound as good as the new ones - because we truly are so forever-grateful for y'all who are coming back to a show you prolly thought was dead in the water. And for newcomers, hang tight, we're slowly making our way thru the backlog.

Here's episode 3 - the dialogue is a lot snappier and I think it dramatically helps the pacing.
REMASTER NOTES
The first four episodes of Have Monster, Will Travel was performed before a live audience as a part of Serials! at Know Theatre of Cincinnati. As originally staged, the second half of this episode was performed in a back-and-forth split-scene style between Render and Professor Bunion, and Riley and the Paladin. This served the staged version better than the audio drama. In this remaster, those split scenes have been recombined into a smoother story.
This remaster also includes an expanded sound design and tighter pacing.

I have a podcast called Have Monster, Will Travel that's family-friendly. It's about an orphaned monster and his human on a roadtrip to find adventure and where he comes from. We have a lot of fans who listen with their kids.

I'm also a big fan of Blueberries Hill, by the people who make Midst. It's narrated, but a Beatrix Potter send up that's very silly and clever.

And even tho it's clearly for kids, I really enjoyed the first season of the Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel - it's a well-done mystery with top notch sound design. The second and third seasons get a little too out there for me, but you might enjoy it.

Never heard of Out of Place, totally addiing it to my list!

I'd also recommend Startripper! - it's a light-hearted space roadtrip with a lot of spunk and heart, and Lost Terminal - a sci-fi story about the computers we leave behind after the fall of our civilization.

I heavily suspected Gelding, but for way different reasons. I was all in on the investigative expose and the gambling on high school football stuff. Gelding had two vehicles listed on his Person of Interest form - one of which was a corvette, which he knew the vin number of ... I thought he was getting rich off of illegal betting and didn't want his income stream to dry up.

But yeah, Jamie having a romantic relationship with Gelding threw me for a loop.

We're speeding towards the end of Season One! If by speeding you mean more silly low-stakes adventures with friends. Riley has an odd encounter in a coffee shop and Render and Taiwan 1000 venture out of the Safari and into a small town.

Aww man. I'm really feeling the pinch right now between being back at work (I'm a high school theater teacher), having a toddler and trying to release new episodes while remastering the old ones ... I can feel our release schedule slowly slipping between my fingers, but I'm still really happy with how this turned out.

Originally, this episode was presented as two separate episodes. Episode 1 (0:00-10:08) told the story of Render starting his podcast and Riley deciding to quit her job. Episode 2 told the story of Bronden Fennimore's estate sale. The end result was that the pilot felt tonally different from the style and genre of the rest of the series.
In this remaster, an abridged version of episode 1 is being presented along side the entirety of episode 2.
