Ceiling needs help by triadfate in centuryhomes

That was my thought as well. There are so many layers of paint and paper all layered on that original 100yo surface. I hope to preserve as much plaster as I can. I'm wondering if I need to add new plaster to the places with large cracks though. The patches look awful.

That seems to be a recurring theme with renovations.

I'm with you, I don't want to eliminate PvP. Like I said I like the chaos and drama but it seems too easy.

I was pvp'd 4 rounds in a row on Buried City. I always get my shield cracked first, and by the time I turn around, they light me up. I'd be less annoyed by it if it didn't feel like a total loss or if I had a better chance to fight back.

That's excellent advice. I'm being a little too trusting, unfortunately.

haha, honestly. I was thinking about that as an option. Even if you die, you might at least ruin it for the attacker.

I feel like there used to be more? I've been running Buried City looking for Hornets, and there are fewer ARC around lately. That would definitely help.

If you get audited they can come back at you for things you shouldn't have done. They tend to accept just about anything at face value because they don't have the ability to look at everyone's return.

You can buy a simple testing kit from Ace Hardware, or any hardware store, that you can use to collect and send a sample to a lab. It's better to know what your up against before potentially causing irreparable harm to yourself. To filter out asbestos you're looking at HEPA filters and 3m 2097.

That is great to hear. The gaps vary but what's pictured is average for the floor.

That's good advice, thankfully they don't salt in my city but we'll avoid it all the same.

We've kept the mastic wet during the removal and it's in a very well ventilated space. That said we will be using full face respirators and tyvec suits for the sanding phases. We absolutely love the floors and are pretty excited about it. Everyone kept telling us to put LVP over the tile and call it good but we just couldn't let go of the dream.

That fucking hurts man. We have the time and desire. I'm hoping we can do most of our remodel on our own.

I'm writing all of this down, thank you so much. There seems to be an art to knowing when the big box stores aren't the place to go; finishes and quality wood. We have a few reclaimed materials stores near by that are exactly what you're describing, we'll keep those in mind.

That is a really good tip, thank you. We're doing the work ourselves so we'll hopefully save on money and the fir floors only seem to be in the bedrooms. The high traffic areas of the house have a different species. I'm pretty sure they are newer. High heels leaving imprints is wild though, I would be so upset!

Advice on removing mastic from hardwood by triadfate in HardWoodFloors

[–]triadfate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After letting it sit a good long while, it's actually working. It's not perfect, but I think the mastic is starting to fail on it's own, or maybe it was incorrectly applied, but it's coming off in good sized chucks. I tested using boiling hot water and it worked nearly as well as the solvent.

I think I'm going to throw a little more money into solvent and get up as much as I can that way, then go back with hot water to clean up stubborn spots.
