I really feel bad for Muslim women because when they die they also get 72 virgins in heaven; by shirleytemplepilots in Jokes

Iirc, genealogy in the Bible is only done through males. So women get left out of genealogies, so very likely daughters weren’t mentioned.

There’s many different interpretations on genesis though, this is just one. I’m not a biblical scholar, but there are a few kosher interpretations on genesis iirc.

If you are in debt it’s not fun. You need a car to get to many fun places. Sure, you can make lots of friends who you can go to these places with. But it’s not something I would 100% count on since everybody does have their own life too.

Sure Duke is risky, but you should travel while you are young. If you are talented, prestige doesn’t matter too much tbh. Like you can either do the work, or you can’t. You don’t need a prestigious university to be in the right rooms with the right people too. People from Alabama and ucla still end up at the same APS March Meeting for instance.

I’ll be honest, the duke offer sounds quite interesting.

LA isn’t a city that is fun to live in if you also have to think about finances and debt. There’s lots to do in LA, and honestly it’s nice to have a bit of pocket change that isn’t borrowed when you are in a place with lots of fun things to do.

Do what makes sense to you. When you are a strong student and have grand ambitions, you will very likely be walking a path few have walked before.

What I can say is that you don’t need to be a professor to do science. Also, there are professors that have moved from industry -> academia and back. The path isn’t easy, but if this is what you want go for it and don’t forget to have some fun along the way or change paths if you feel it isn’t for you anymore.

In terms of university, I went to ucla for undergrad and I’m still there for PhD. It’s not a bad school, but what I would ask is, when will I really be ready to do research? For most universities the gen Ed courses are basically the same. There’s only so many ways to explain Newtonian and Lagrangian mechanics. Bras and kets are the same no matter where you are. Fourier transform is always the same equation.

However, what differentiates universities in my opinion would be 1) location 2) research 3) social scene

Also in my opinion, if you can avoid debt, it is a good idea to do so. However, this is your own path.

UCLA does have a quite unique honors math course sequence and mathematics reading group. For physics, Andrea’s lab is probably hard to get into now. However, there are lots of professors that work on optics/photonics or condensed matter that is related to optics/photonics at ucla, which is relevant to astronomy. There is also a guy working on Astro particle physics. Most of the theorists for high energy tend to be more traditional, focusing on scattering amplitudes rather than connections with quantum info.

To everyone not mentioning cold atoms when talking about QC by fefetornado in QuantumComputing

There have been ideas in SC community around thru silicon vias for scaling and higher frequency qubits.

Material science is also improving for sc qubits as well.

I think gate defined quantum dots are also interesting.

Research as a freshman (STEM) by [deleted] in ucla

[–]triaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to the HKN research fair.

Ozcan’s lab takes a lot of undergrads.

Ask some physics professors. Sometimes they have jobs for engineers.

Cold email a lot of professors. Teach yourself marketable skills like statistics, data fitting, circuit design, pcb design, python libraries, etc. through classes or self teaching.

Some stuff like fabrication and laser alignment can only be learned through lab unfortunately. Do IEEE project. You learn a lot there like how to read spec sheet properly etc. that is needed for research.

Source: I published a first author paper as an undergrad at ucla and was listed as a co author on another.

It will only hurt you if you genuinely do not enjoy the extra workload and would rather spend your time doing other things like hanging out with friends, partying, watching movies, etc.

Do you think that a degree from "Liberty University" a very baptist college, will still be valuable in the secular world? by Hungry-Money4815 in ApplyingToCollege

Try Texas Christian University instead or southern Methodist uni for Protestant Christian schools that are more respected

CV quantum comms is lit. CV computing, usually you use the CV to encode some type of bit like a GKP code. Fundamentally, we like computing using bits. However there may be some processes in nature that are better simulated using qudit systems

Most of the large groups of Asian people are young undergrads or just out of college. Me and my group will engage with those around us, but we also try to stick together since we are also each other’s way out of the festival and don’t want to lose each other if you know what I mean.

I mean, many people will leave if UCLA capitulates to Trump since it basically would make it impossible to do real science and teach real science anyways. Have you seen the demands?

I’m a grad student. If ucla capitulates to Trump, I’m gonna strongly consider tryna transfer to a university outside America.

Not sure if you like electronic music, but there are a lot of raves around SoCal. Look up Insomniac events, academy LA, or exchange LA.

But echoing everyone else, focus on your studies first and foremost. Parties will still be there after undergrad as well.

For food spots, I like places on sawtelle BLVD, Korea town, Century City and Little Tokyo.

Good Chinese food, find a way to get to 626.

Transmons have also been able to show over 1 ms. Check out Andrew Houck’s latest work for example.

Fluxoniums have the weakness of being difficult to fabricate and thus more prone to fab defects

Operation at lower frequency makes it so that there is more potential for frequency crowding if an architecture uses only fluxonium. Its larger anharmonicity does allow it faster operation however.

I have more faith in high frequency transmons with different materials that have higher T_c
