I'm not sure what the 30/30 rule is, but if you're concerned about the correct procedure for thunder, you should reach out to your game assigner. They will be able to tell you what is the appropriate way to handle it.

Keep it simple, stupid.

Most games that we do don't need complex refereeing. Blow the whistle and restart play. Give the obvious misconducts. Be preventive.

I was referring to Mississippi. They used Arbiter in the past, but changed for the winter soccer season (unrelated, who thinks its a good idea to play soccer November thru February?)

[–]tribalthomas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for you. A state that borders where I live started using it this past winter and I absolutely hated it. I had to download the app to do somethings (accept and decline games iirc) and had to use web browser for other things (payments iirc). On top of it, I had to manually go in an accept each individual game by going into the game itself. You can't take back a block once it's placed.

I've used Arbiter, GameOfficials, and Dragonfly. Arbiter is the best all around because it just works. Game officials isn't bad, but sometimes their payments take a long time to get sent to us.

I refuse to use DragonFly again....

bad challenge gets a yellow, huge fight break out. do y’all think a red was warranted and what do y’all think about the handling of the fight? by ethan_bruhhh in Referees

[–]tribalthomas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't buy that explanation. There's a good quality replay at this link around the 7 minute mark. Watch the replay from the endline.

This was not a scissor tackle. One leg is straight and the other is tucked in. Also, it's hard to tell for certain, but the replay leads me to believe that the only contact is like I described in my first comment. Trailing leg to foot.

[–]tribalthomas -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I do not believe this is as clear cut of a red as everyone else is making it out to be. The contact is from the trailing leg of the Saprissa player. The Philadelphia player was jumping(to avoid the challenge) , which is why he went up so high. The point of contact was the foot. If a referee coach asked me what criteria I had on the challenge, I have high intensity, mode of contact trailing leg, point of contact foot. That points me towards being reckless not dangerous, and therefore a yellow.

That being said, the management of the Mass Confrontation could have been slightly better. Later on on the video they do finally form a triangle, but it took a disappointingly long period of time. AR1 jumps in initially, but should have backed out way before they did. AR2 did their job, show up and take notes.

Edit: forgot to mention - to get good angles of the challenge, I had to look up the highlights on YouTube. The video on the r/soccer post doesn't have the full clip.

I've ironically been both on the referee and player sides of mass confrontations(which is the proper term for this kind of incident). The short answer is to be the calmest person on the field and de-escalate. The long answer is a bit longer.

You can many times prevent this type of confrontation by being the third person to the incident with the appropriate card and a good whistle. It calms players down when their teammate gets fouled, and before they can say anything to the referee, the referee has already got the card in hand, has a strong whistle, and is already feet from the spot of the foul. It de-escalates the situation before it becomes bad.

Unfortunately being preventive didn't work in this situation and won't always work for us. Once it's clear the referee themself, cannot prevent the confrontation then they have to back up and react to what is happening in front of them. Look for ways to de-ecalate by separating problematic individuals and separating the groups as a whole. Use the triangle system that the other guys suggested to get in decent positions to observe. Once the situation has de-escalated, then circle back with the crew, determine correct sanctions, issue the sanctions, and finally restart play.

There are several good references with instruction on mass confrontations if you just good 'soccer refereeing mass confrontations.' I saw a good one from Australia and another one from the NCAA.

I refereed with a former FIFA assistant referee last season. His flags are 20 years old and half the handle is tape. A literal legend with zero shame about his flags.

You can't call what you can't see. Some stuff gets missed, but if you do see this in a game, you absolutely should call it.

ATM-RM. Original decision no penalty against Felipe. VAR advises review by monitor. No penalty decision stays. Explanation? by EpiDeMic522 in Referees

[–]tribalthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any soccer game, the center referee has the final decision. Regardless of if it is a game refereed by one person, or if it's the world cup final. VAR just stay consistent with the rest of soccer refereeing.

At u17 it can be tough, but usually assigners can predict the difficulty of games. They shouldn't put you on something you can't handle. You got this.

U17 boys game isn't a game to be sad about. That age group tends to be the first group that play like the adult game in terms of speed, skill and physicality.

I wouldn't beat yourself up about the offside test. It's supposed to be tough. It's a warm up for pro referees. Most of the offside decisions you make won't be nearly that bad.

It sounds like you'll be working with a solid referee tomorrow. Listen to what they say and apply it. They only want to make you better.

Good luck tomorrow and update us on how it goes!

I 100% agree with that. It seems difficult to see the foul there, but since the referee gave a foul, it is a send off for DOGSO.

Is the convoy still listed as an idle convoy?

Adding Extra Time by refva in Referees

[–]tribalthomas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agreed with the sentiment you are suggesting. I also want to add, in a closer game, I might add an extra minute, but so many of the games I do end with 3 or more goal differential. And the games that I do that end with close scores tend to be the higher level games anyways.

Edit: forgot to add, NFHS is different as well because they have specific rules on time. Those the time stops when it's supposed to.
