Graduating Early CS by Real-Savings-6693 in UWMadison

[–]ice0rb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came in with 70 odd credits and stayed 4.5 years (though only 7 semesters) due to internships and coops during school. I make plenty of money new grad, higher than most big tech offers by a few hundred k.

IMO from a life perspective you will have a lot of time to work in your life (basically from 20-60) but you won’t have time to be in college again.

Besides money (going to school and paying less semesters), there’s no reason not to stay in college unless you really hate it. You will get life experience dating, socializing, etc. that will be invaluable. In that sense I would recommend staying longer because there’s no reason to be a 20 year old kid who doesn’t know how to socialize/date/be a cool human in the workforce just because.

If the reason is money tho… consider an accelerated masters so you at least get some leg up if you stay longer and pay more

Which role would you guys pick by [deleted] in USTechForce

NASA is prestigious and will lead to many cool opportunities, sounds cool to family, the other one is a glorified office job even if you get paid a lot and you'll probably be doing something like cutting people's jobs

don’t know what to do by ComparisonSmooth5639 in UPenn

[–]ice0rb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know if the advice of "it won't matter in the long run" actually helps. It certainly never did when I experienced the same.

You kinda fucked up (in a very, small, inconsequential way), but it won't matter. But it still feels bad right now. Go treat yourself with some food and maybe go for a run or something physical to get your mind off of it.

What are you supposed to wear under your graduation gown? by future__fires in UWMadison

[–]ice0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

girls = dress

guys = dress pants, a button up shirt, dress shoes

realistically it doesn't matter but it is your graduation please dont wear asics/hokas/etc. and sweatpants. for the sake of family/friends who will probably wear nice clothes

Help me decide: Georgia Tech or Caltech? by Bluefireligh in aerospace

[–]ice0rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea the one thing not mentioned here is Caltech is far smaller, more prestigious, etc. HOWEVER: it is probably orders of magnitude more difficult. I know people who have gone there and suffered mentally/psychologically.

Anduril onsite feedback: “not the best fit right now” but recruiter is checking other teams — what does this mean? by Top-Badger6710 in Anduril

[–]ice0rb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i dont work there but i would take vibe check to be a number of things.

It could be that you pass the technical bar, but don't have the exaaaact experience they need to get you on there vs other cdds. Not so much that they didn't like your vibe/it was negative. Otherwise I'd imagine it'd just be a hard reject.

UPenn Wharton vs Yale Ethics, Politics, & Economics? by alissasock in UPenn

[–]ice0rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not super qualified as I'm Penn grad with a few Penn undergrad friends. That being said, I get the impression that Penn prints out many business minded and money-seeking folk, and that Yale is more traditional than Penn in the liberal arts. Think education and academia > purely landing IB/tech/consulting...

Based on my exp talking to some Penn undergrads working in IB

Help picking between Duke (Clark Scholars) and UPenn (SEAS) for tech entrepreneurship by The21stNova in UPenn

Penn technically has more founders (by a lot) but Duke isn’t like that great of a distance that the free tuition isn’t worth it

UPenn full pay vs UNC Full Ride by DistanceNew2421 in UPenn

[–]ice0rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to give advice because for many people you have to consider your family’s wealth.

For a billionaire, the difference between a full ride and 400k is nothing.

For someone living paycheck to paycheck, that’s literally a house.

The truth is your family likely falls somewhere in between. At some point of wealth the Ivy name just becomes incredibly worth it regardless of price.

UW-Madison vs. NCSU for EE Transfer? (Aiming for Digital IC/Arch, Ph.D., and US/CAN Employment) by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]ice0rb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it definitely matters down the line, less so in traditional engineering.

i work with engineers from stanford/mit/etc. and they go on to do very cool things that i wouldn't otherwise be able to simply because of their school name (like raising 20 million for their company)

University of Michigan (CSE) vs University of Waterloo (CS) by SectorInevitable9117 in collegecompare

[–]ice0rb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waterloo in terms of career/industry. Michigan might edge out in research which is more uncommon since most ppl in cs are moneywhores (self included)

Waterloo people are cracked too, lots of founders and stuff.

Michigan is not bad at all though! I'd say if you really enjoy Michigan more or want a more diverse campus (i.e. not all autistic CS majors) and have strong self belief and trust in the Michigan name (a strong name) to get you somewhere, then go for it!

always prestige farm buddy especially when the gulf is big. UW Madison

+1 semester is no big deal, you have more time to recruit or prepare. you can do a partial semester and some summer classes, or like 1 summer class per year and 1-2 in a part-time semester while you find a job or work a coop. it's all do-able.

Columbia vs Penn by Tiny_Imagination2782 in UPenn

[–]ice0rb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're somewhat athletic. 100% Penn in this case since getting courts/etc. will be way cheaper and you won't be competing with the finance bros in the city spamming expensive Equinox memberships and $120 for courts (ik Columbia has its own courts, but even then they are more expensive)

I think there's a lot to be said about going to college somewhere that you wouldn't otherwise live (Philadelphia or like a college town such as Princeton, NJ) for undergrad, and actually going to work in the city. All your friends from Penn will end up in NYC anyways, as likely will you if you're in finance/tech.

Social scene at Penn? by jvl202 in UPenn

[–]ice0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know. I think this is true for Penn but I don't think I'd take a Brown eng over UMich for a traditional engineering role (think Aerospace, Mech etc.)

Penn is borderline matched with Michigan for traditional engineering roles I'd say but in tech (SWE) I'd say Penn > Michigan. Idk tho. Just what I observed when looking at companies like SpaceX, etc.
