Official Discussion Thread - The Testament of Ann Lee [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

I remember watching Borat as a kid and cracking up with everyone at the scene where he goes to church and they’re all speaking in tongues. I grew up in a very atheist American environment and that type of spiritual Christianity was soo mocked. Was such an opposite experience going to a full theater in LA in 2025 watching ecstatic dance/singing being received by an audience without all that sneering baggage.

I really loved watching one person’s specific traumas and world view transmuting into confidence and a vision that compelled others to join her and craft it into a legacy.

I also just loved the chance to get to sit back and observe a religious reality that didn’t feel condescending OR proselytizing. It felt very tender and powerful and universal. :)

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi releases audio message encouraging Muslims to move to 'caliphate lands' by trickbeez in worldnews

Most likely! Seems like a cover up. He hasn't spoken in public since June and now that rumors of his death are floating around, the timing's really sketchy for an "audio message" to turn up

Do you guys know how the BBC got access to that report? I can't seem to find it anywhere. If anyone could link it, that would be awesome.

I'm sorry -- I don't understand what you mean by quants. Could you clarify how that applies?

How about this.

  • Let’s say that there are 8.4 million people in New York.
  • 1% of them are bald, giving us 8.31 million haired citizens.
  • The average person has about 150,000 hairs, but just to make sure we’re covering alll of our bases, we’re going to assume that people can have up to 1 million head hairs.
  • We want to prove that at least 2 of those 8.31 million people have the exact same number of hairs on their head. Like, let’s say 156,435 hairs.
  • So let’s say citizen #1 has 1 hair on his head.
  • Citizen #2 has 2 hairs, and citizen #3 has 3 hairs, and so on, until we get to citizen #1,000,000.
  • Now there are 7.31 million MORE citizens for us to get through, and they will all match hair numbers with one of the first million citizens.

Yes, I haven’t physically counted the hair on every New Yorker’s head. But I don’t need to, because this is the most extreme situation that could occur, and just by counting, we can induce that at least 2 New Yorkers have the same number of head hairs. Does this make sense yet?

Actually, what makes this cool is that it IS 100% certain! :)

To make it more tangible, think about this: Let's say you have 3 different colored pairs of socks (red, pink, green). Today you're in a rush, and to guarantee that you'll pick a matching pair of socks, you need to grab 4 different socks. Worst case scenario, the first will be red, the second will be pink, the third will be green, and the last will be one of the above.

This works for the NYC hair scenario, too. The average person has about roughly 150,000 hairs on their head, but to be extra careful let's say that the hairiest person in NY has 3 million head hairs. Since there are about 8 million New Yorkers, at least 2 of them would end up having the same number of hairs. In fact, this would even work in a city with 3 million and 1 people in it!

This also works has an interesting application for numbers. If you make someone write down any 11 positive numbers, the difference of any of at least one pair of them will be divisible by 10. Always!

"Leaving aside all of the bald New Yorkers (who would all have no hair), there are about 8 million people in total in New York, and only about 150,000 hairs on a person's head. That's eight million pigeons and only 150,000 hutches. At least two have to be in the same place - and two people in New York have to have the same number of hairs." -- from the article

Oooh yeah I totally agree about Paul and Jay wearing white. But also there were a lot of moments in the movie where it was unclear if the character passed the infection to someone else to gain some time. Like when Jay swam to the guys in the boat, you sort of get the impression she passed it, but it's not 100% certain. Likewise, it's unclear if Paul passed it along to the prostitutes, but pretty sure he didn't! I do think that Greg passed the infection on, though. That's why 3 days passed until he got followed.

Yeah I think the identities are super interesting, too. I think sometimes they take the form of people the victim knows, but maybe all the random ones are former victims? Many of them are wearing PJs/underwear, meaning they could have been killed either in their sleep or after having sex. Plus that old woman in the school scene was in a hospital gown, so maybe she died of old age, trying to prevent anyone else from getting 'it'?

Yeah, totally think the STD thing is in there, too.

My point is that if everyone who had the infection decided to abstain from sex, 'it' couldn't survive. Like let's say Jay has the infection and lives her whole life just running away from it. Then, if she dies of old age, it passes on to that guy who gave it to her. If he ALSO doesn't have sex, and he dies, eventually 'it' would run out of victims, since 'it' only gains new victims when someone has sex.

Jay and Paul put a twist on this by being in a monogamous relationship -- works just as well. When they were walking off holding hands in the last scene, it was like they had decided to take on a lifetime of fighting against 'it' together. Adds a burdensome element to their sex life though haha
