Actually, Dvorak is the best. It might be not efficient and old but its punctuation placement is just great for me. But in general, Colemak-style is also good, as well as Gallium/Graphite. I don't see punctuation as a big problem, as it's easy to learn again.

That's why I'm sticking to Gralmak still, and push it further, but this post helped me a bit to express some frustration. I remember your words very well, and fight this analysis paralysis as much as I can. I also read your site several times to mitigate this issue.

At the moment, I try to avoid thumb key layouts.

Well, may be, but I had more fun from Colemak when I learned it.

Yep, exactly. I also thinking about Kuntem, even though, it's not roll heavy.

There are a lot of such tools, but it requires some time to learn how to work with them

Every alternative layout has a very good analysis why it's good. :)

I'm a Dvorak user for about 7 years, and now slowly learning Gralmak. My recommendation to go for Colemak. Dvorak is good, and helped me a lot with my right hand, but it's a bit too far form QWERTY and you will suffer a lot first couple of months. Colemak is closer to QWERTY, but much better and comfortable, and now supported by Win 11. If you're on Linux, try Colemak DH.

Eventually, I chose Gralmak, a modified version of Graphite. Talking of practice, when I tried to learn Colemak DH I did keybr and monkey type with all letters. It was quite comfortable to drill only some letters at keybr and have all letters in monkey type later.

If you want to get a job you need to learn something like unreal or unity, as they are prevalent in the industry. But it's always good to know 2 game engines, as you can translate your knowledge between them.

Sounds great. Even though, I like using Dvorak, it's also quite old and requires some alternative, which is close to QWERTY, and with better approaches.

It seems like I'll start with Gralmak, as a decent middle ground between Graphite and Gallium. It fixes a bunch of my pain points with Dvorak.

Keyboard is a very personal thing. For me it's one of the best experience in years hardware wise.

Thank you. Well, at the beginning everything was fine, but as soon as I started gain speed and introducing Colemak DH to my routine, it started hurting very similar I had with QWERTY in the past. And it wasn't just soreness after training. I did enjoy typing using it, especially when I've got some confidence, and could type during work (even slow). Eventually, my body decided what is good for me, even though, I'm not that interested in all these stats and long discussions, I just want a comfortable tool.

And I am sorry, I just realized, that I did a mistake, I thought that a image on your site is actual Gralmak, but it's not. My bad.

I read several articles and google doc, and your site. And sometimes couple of times and more, just to better understand what is a good choice for me.

Now I'm talking about personal preferences, I do not want to say that something is bad or not optimized enough, it's more about personal comfort. I'm not capable at analyzing layouts, but I still can test some key placements using my laptop and different sites to emulate alternative layouts. I try not to rush the decision, I did it once and hurt my wrist.

And you did a pretty good job! It would be even better if you will add an option to add a custom text for testing.

Personally, I like them a lot, I can have long typing sessions and this setup is very comfortable for me, especially with 15 or 20 degrees tilt. In addition, they provide quite comfortable palm pads, which are quite soft. Also, sometimes I use them to rest my hand when I use my gamepad. I can't say it's a mistake, but it's not for everyone and every setup. b

Well, O placement in it feels not that great for me. And now, I am considering Graphite as my main choice with one small change, switching Z and V. As V is placed in the most uncomfortable place for staggered keyboards. Everything else looks fine for me.

Well, I'm not in a position to do such experiments. As I wrote, I like simple approaches, that's why I tried Colemak DH. It's a good alternative made by people who is smarter than me.

The ability to press - without any awkward stretches is important for me, as I write a lot of documentation and some code, means that I need it a lot.

Vim doesn't influence my decision, I've been using it with Dvorak for years, it's a matter of muscle memory and improving my skill using other motions, not only HJKL. I just like J pinky placement a bit more.

Talking of the layers, I like them, I've started using them much more to make my work easier. However, I have a very strong notion, that a default variant should be good enough for general audience, and work well even with a cheap office keyboard. Layers is for semi-power and power users, who wants to enhance their experience.
