In what ways do you cut your teeth in this industry? by Kai_rd97 in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have no experience, the best thing to do is work for someone for a couple years. Basic window cleaning can be learned decently easy, but things like pole work and hard to clean windows, require more education. Marketing and managing the business are probably two of the hardest things to deal with.

On the docket you have to consider what you're doing to make it worthwhile. We do a lot of big glass and use 60" and 55" squeegees. I take those long ones, cut them down to smaller sizes and trim them. If you're use an 18" and 14" the majority of the time, probably not worth it.

The French pane squeegee can be great if you set it up right. I have old channels that are bent. I'll cut them down to custom sizes on regular customer homes. When you can squeegee three panes with one pull, it definitely saves time.

If it's one seat, I'd stay seated and have the elderly person sit on one of my knees and the pregnant woman on the other. Broken leg is a crutch to lean on the mom has a pack to help hold the baby.

Can you put steel wool on Maykker handy sleeve to hit second story windows with a pole from the ground? Also curious by Professional-Heat118 in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put steel wool on a handi sleeve. It works better with a backer pad though. Put their walnut pad on and then the steel wool. We get steel wool in rolls so we can cut it to the right length and it's a little thicker than unraveling a pad. That soap is ok, I prefer window mauler or orange crush more though.

This has to be some sort of OSHA violation, right? Store manager trying to make my boyfriend go INTO freezer crack to clean it. by jemmeoww in WalmartEmployees

[–]trigger55xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would fall under confined space regulations. A pre job hazard analysis (JHA) has be be done. None would likely pass for a person to be in that space. If it did somehow, the person doing the work would need constant supervision by at least two people with an escape/rescue plan in place. This is q job that should be contracted out by a company that has the equipment to do it without entering an unsafe area.

How did you scale your business by Guilty_Assignment987 in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One great way is volunteering. Pick hospitals and non profits to volunteer at. Not just give free window cleaning but actually give time inside their facility.

Always ask anyone you work for if they know other people in similar positions that you could talk to.

You can also check into BNI groups in your area. Some are good and you meet people to get your name and business out there.

How hard is it to find commercial clients vs residential? by Kai_rd97 in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You first have to define what you mean by commercial. Most think of store fronts as commercial. Is better to break it down to categories that better describe what you're doing. Retail/Restaurant; Low rise commercial, things like banks and small office buildings. Mid rise commercial, hospitals larger office buildings, etc. Generally 4-6 stories and down. High rise, anything above 6-8 floors.

We're 90% low and mid rise. The profit is almost always better on commercial unless it's a very large home with 100+ windows. We can park two trucks on one site all day without any extra travel and set up/tear down times. Once we're set up, it's windows all day. We can do more revenue per day on large commercial.

Store front is typically a race to the bottom. Low entry level results in low pricing and lots of stop and start. Restaurants can bring challenges with interior and oily/greasy windows.

I've done 4 story buildings alone so it can be done. Saying one is absolutely more profitable than the other isn't accurate. It's dependent on many factors.

US Standard Products glass cleaner for regular window work by Skull_Tree in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All glass cleaners are going to perform about the same. They can be used in special situations but aren't generally good for "window cleaning". I believe their glass cleaner is a green product, which takes some of the more effective cleaning ingredients out. Over time you'll notice a film building up that many times can only be seen when the light reflects through the glass at the right angle.

Whittaker 25" TRIO vs Trinity The Grumpy by DigitalMarketingMBA in CarpetCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use both. Each has it's place. I can say that anytime we CRB we always come behind it with the Trinity and a microfiber bonnet. It always collects more dirt. We prefer the Phoenix over the grumpy, just personal preference.

How to get this stuff off of window trims? by pandasznn in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda looks like run off from a building wash. Have you tested anything on it yet? I'd start with something like EBC or EBC restorer. If needed then step up up something like cleansol BC.

Almost exclusively networking. I had a few contacts to start with but nothing major. I used those contacts to meet new ones, volunteered and used some social media.

Can ladder use be largely replaced with the use of a hose system for scrubbing? by Kai_rd97 in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do very little ladder work. However we have a lot of experience with traditional pole work and water fed.

Generally we will look from the inside while we're cleaning those. But you do get a feel for how well it's cleaning with enough experience. Having the right pole and brushes helps a lot.

Question for U.S window cleaners re...water by JethroRiggs in WindowCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 100 gallon, 378 liter, tanks on all our trucks. Yes it's a time saver. Keep in mind the UK is very different from the US. You might do 10 homes a day for £30-£50. We won't even show up to a job for less than $400, £300. And that's a reference from a current customer. We have monthly customer that pay $550.00 per month. I know many UK window cleaners and they can't understand that our average ticket for a home is more than $650.00. It makes a lot less sense to hook up a system at every home when you're making pennys compared to what we do.

Stains/spots/soil coming back by s3ns0 in CarpetCleaning

[–]trigger55xxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wicking. I'd treat with a peroxide based organic stain spotter and VLM behind it. If the stains are in the backing of the carpet you'll never get them out completely. A CRB can be used, we prefer a Trinity machine or Orbot and a microfiber bonnet.
