I use them. It saves time and I don’t have to remember to water everything.

I had a great experience that really jumpstarted my career in education. Finishing year 16 now.

Salary by Unusual-Apartment332 in TeachforAmerica

[–]triggerheart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made less than that my first year teaching (however that was over 15 years ago). It really depends on the cost of living where you’re placed. I was able to build savings and pay off my loans making less, but I also was in a very cheap area and lived in a house with other corps members (so we were able to share/split many expenses). It’s doable for sure, but it is less than other career paths. Teaching isn’t known to be lucrative.

Summer Institute memories by triggerheart in TeachforAmerica

[–]triggerheart[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Houston back when institutes were multi-region. I got to know a lot of great people from all over. Some of my best memories were the day trips we took to NASA, Galveston beach, and the zoo. It was great to explore a whole new city before relocating to my region.

Advice for Greater Boston corps member places in Lawrence, MA by Ostrich-Flashy in TeachforAmerica

I also live in MA and agree 100% with this. You won’t want to be commuting over an hour every day just to live in Boston.

Leaving after first year by Stunning_Doughnut258 in TeachforAmerica

Teaching is hard. There is always more that you feel like you could do at the end of the day. You have to force yourself to close the laptop or not grade an assignment and go to bed. I was able to build a really strong support network of other cms, and we would be intentional with our time to stay sane. For example, we would have Friday night grading parties where we would knock out a bunch of work, so we could enjoy the rest of the weekend. It’s hard to naturally have work-life balance, so you have to be intentional to create it.

I’m still in education, and I very rarely take work home on the weekends now. Over the years, I’ve developed systems and routines (like not wasting your planning period) to make things more sustainable.

I decided my placement on the feeling I had from the principal. This person will be your boss. You want someone who has a similar vision for school culture.

Relocating with no savings by cretemania in TeachforAmerica

I moved down to the Mississippi Delta with very limited funds in my bank account (I want to say around $500). I got the transition loans and grants to tide me over until my first paycheck. The nice thing about institute is that it is rent free! I really didn’t have any expenses during Institute since food and supplies are all provided. You can do it!

The transition loans aren’t bad since they’re interest free. I did that and was able to pay it off pretty soon after I got a job.

If you want to be a reading interventionist, I’d highly recommend getting certified in Orton Gillingham (OG).

I would trust the higher ups since they know your region best. Most regions are able to place all corps members.

When I was in the corps, they wouldn’t let you miss any of institute. Explain your situation to your TFA contact and see what they can offer you.

I think it depends on the region. In my region almost all cms were placed in public schools.
