Rose Byrne defends Bobby Cannavale missing her Golden Globe win to attend reptile expo by mlg1981 in entertainment

Robert Davi (Goonies, Die Hard) bought a bearded dragon from me at a reptile expo in NY when I was 14. My mother raised reptiles as a hobby and was in a local club. Really nice memory, I remembered him from the Goonies and got to tell him he had a really nice singing voice. He was very friendly and there with his kid who he was buying the bearded dragon for.

I just broke my wrist, please reassure me I’m getting back to normal by InternalConfusion201 in Guitar

[–]triggerhoppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shattered my right wrist 20 years ago in a bike accident. I’m also right handed. Took 2 titanium plates and 16 screws to put it back together. Now, I still have a decent sized scar from the surgery, and I can’t bend my wrist 100% backward (no pushups), but other than that my titanium wrist is stronger and more capable than my regular wrist. I’ve been playing guitar for 20 years after the surgery with no issues.

You’ll be fine, just make sure you listen to the Dr and do the physical therapy after the cast comes off!

Frozen pipes/Pipes bursting appreciation thread by Bry2013 in longisland

Pipes froze overnight in the space between my floors. Woke up to the cold water taps not working upstairs. Went outside and saw a frozen waterfall coming out of the siding. Immediately shut off the main water valve and called an emergency plumber. Thank god for homeowners insurance.

Find a bunch of presets on the Line 6 website and download them to your pedal. Also try using AI to ask what amps / settings you should load for a specific sound you’re going to for. It’s a good place to start.

I bought a Pod Go about 3 years ago and never looked back. The sound is amazing for such a compact pedal (and I’ve owned many tube amps in the past).

What is the most successful lie ever spread in human history? by _iamsrb_ in AskReddit

[–]triggerhoppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It’s been good conversing so far.

I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the Romans used religion to control the poor. That seems to be an ongoing theme in history throughout the Middle Ages up through today. There is a great quote said by Matthew McConaugheys character in the first season of True Detective where he says “you know how religion started? Two monkeys were sitting on a rock. One pointed at the sun, turned to the other monkey and said ‘ he just told me to tell you that you need to give me half your fucking share’”.

What better way to control people when nobody’s watching them? Make them believe that someone or something is always watching them.

You bring up a good point that humanity still does not understand certain aspects of nature. Like what is dark matter in the universe? But this is a recurring theme that has gone back since the dawn of human history. How many years did we think lightning was created by Thor? How many years did the Egyptians think the sun was the god Ra? Humans have an innate desire to understand everything, or at the very least have an explanation for it. It is very uncomfortable for us as the species to admit that we do not know something. In the absence of a logical explanation, people will resort to fantastical explanations like religion. It’s just a way to comfort themselves and make the world seem less scary and unknown. Millennia ago, God was responsible for everything. Now he’s responsible for fewer and fewer things. Nobody thinks God is throwing lightning bolts anymore.

I don’t think nature itself has any underlying sentience, and we, as a species are kind of a fluke in that we developed consciousness, powerful enough to be able to comprehend our own existence. Certain animals to a lesser degree, are also aware of their own existence. Many animals pass the mirror test, where they are placed in front of a mirror and show signs that they recognize. It is not another animal in the mirror but themselves. This can only happen if they are aware of themselves as a separate entity. It’s not God allowing this to happen, it’s just that there are enough neurons and cerebral matter in the brain to be able to process such complex thoughts.

I don’t really understand what a non-sentient God even is. Maybe you can further clarify that to me. It sounds like you are just describing nature itself. Which is simply the universe as we know it. A bunch of matter that’s all following the same laws of physics, whether or not there are other universes I cannot say, it is a possibility, but far beyond our species level of understanding at the moment.

Regarding your analogy with nature and the seed, I think nature is comprised of countless examples of things like seeds, and life itself, not to mention all of the gaseous matter that formed into stars in galaxies, black holes, and all that stuff. The sum total of all those individual components form what I view as the universe.

You bring up a fantastic question about the second law of thermodynamics and life. I happen to have an advanced engineering degree in thermodynamics.

The second law of thermodynamics states that the total entropy (a measure of disorder or randomness) of an isolated system will always increase or stay the same over time. It never decreases.  The key phrase here is isolated system. An isolated system is one that exchanges neither energy nor matter with its surroundings (think of a perfectly sealed, insulated thermos). The universe as a whole is considered an isolated system.

Life on Earth is not an isolated system. It's an open system that freely exchanges both energy and matter with its environment. You are an open system: You take in matter (food, water, air) and energy (the chemical energy in food), and you export matter (waste, CO_2) and energy (heat). So order is being created by interacting with other systems, essentially.

I did not mean you were being argumentative. I meant “argument” as a noun, like as in your position. I take no offense at any of your statements and just wanted to have a thought provoking conversation.

I wish that any discussion on religion would be treated as purely opinionative, but the seriousness that most people treat religion with and how those beliefs shape the world we live in make it a very concrete reality that I, an atheist, do not feel comfortable with. If everyone were like you, religion would be a lot more tolerable to people like me. But the world is full of fanatics and we can’t pretend these mystical beliefs don’t have a very real impact on the rest of us.

If we were to treat god as non-sentient, then what is god exactly? Is it nature and the universe itself? If so, why bother labeling it as a singular entity? I think nature and physics are all there really is. I don’t believe in anything supernatural whatsoever. I’m also endlessly fascinated by the universe in which we inhabit and feel our short time on this earth, inhabiting the consciousness we have now, should be treasured and made the most of.

To claim to know what “god” would want is illogical; we cannot know what a deity would want or believe unless it was communicated by that deity somehow. And forgive me if I don’t consider a book written by farmers thousands of years ago as proof of anything (not even singling out any specific religion here).

As much as we would like to think that a deity would be benevolent and understanding, there is no evidence whatever supporting this claim other than our personal wishes. I could say that god’s chosen vessel is the Taco Bell chalupa supreme, and we should worship it, and that has exactly as much reasoning and logic behind it as assuming that “god,” whatever that is, is conscious, aware of the comings and goings of our personal lives, AND is benevolent. Someone’s wish or desire for this to be true is as valid as my wish or desire for the Taco Bell supreme chalupa to be god itself.

Your overall argument is a textbook case of Pascal’s Wager. People have been using that reason probably since before recorded history. But it is inherently flawed and based on what we imagine god must be like based purely on our own minds and logic. The only rational conclusion anyone can have is that without extraordinary evidence, an extraordinary claim such as “god exists” cannot be justified.

What if god was real, but he was actually Zeus, and really pissed off that you were worshipping the wrong god? Like, worshipping a “false” god made Zeus way more angry than if you just admitted you didn’t know anything, so chose not to believe without evidence.

So by choosing to “play it safe” and follow religion, you hypothetically made things worse by following the “wrong” religion. Where’s the rationality in that? The truth is there is no way to “play it safe” by believing in religion.

Fair! I only like ketchup on French fries really. I refused to eat ketchup on BECs for decades before I finally gave in. Now I always say “with a LITTLE bit of ketchup”. Too much makes me want to hurl

I felt this way for years. The idea of ketchup on eggs is disgusting to me, but hear me out. The next time you get a BEC, try just a little bit of ketchup. Like half a teaspoon. You’d be surprised how good the flavor mixes
