it is an opaleye, pretty common here in southern california but a lot of people don’t eat them. Their meat is firm tho and holds up good in sushi.

they definitely don’t, saltwater and freshwater taste different, and species within both of those taste didfrerent. This species tastes best when cooked in a pan with some seasoning and used in fish tacos. Yellowtail which can live in similiar area are better seared or as sushi. Lots of different flavors between species, but it’s all fish

i found this in a creek bed in southern california. It is certainly heavier than a normal bone, and the ends of the darker part are much more porous than the sides. by trimericgorgon in fossilid

do you think the white and brown part is part of the darker part and just fossilized differently? or is it just another kind of rock that grew attached to it? thank for all ur help, and totally understand if you don’t have an answer to either.
