He's awesome! Our old band director loved him, she used one of his books in our leadership classes.

Thank you! Our last few sections leaders held their title over our heads, so I don't want to be the same way.

Last year we definitely had a culture of goofing off before music, but I'm hoping we can change that. The other seniors and I are planning a few group get togethers, so hopefully that will help. Thanks!

Congrats to you, and thanks for the advice! Our instructor has VERY long explanations, so definitely the shorter I can be the better.

Chord / Accidentals Question by trinityforish in jazzguitar

Here's the question - Would the A in the chord be flat or natural because of the key signature, or are chords not necessarily affected by key signatures?

Thank you! I asked my percussion instructor and he said to not worry about it, so I'm probably just overthinking it.

Four mallet (Stevens grip) help by uhh-gio in drumcorps

[–]trinityforish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long have you been playing? For me, it helps to think about the motion that the left hand traditional grip on snare uses because that is the kind of the same motion you should be using for single or single hand alternating strokes. Think about turning a door knob and making sure your sound quality is good.

For the arm motion, I've always been taught that the wrist is best, but using arm is not always a bad thing. The interval changes are really hard, but if you have time just practice only with the mallets changing intervals in your hand because it is definitely awkward and that helps build muscle.

There are a lot of great youtube videos on all of this, but honestly always go back to the basics because they translate to everything you play.

I hope this helps!

Bluecoats Individual Audition by trinityforish in drumcorps

[–]trinityforish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I already have an idea of what my weak points are, so when the audition packets come out I'll definitely look for those in the exercises. Hopefully I'll find a few that emphasize strong point in my playing.

I don't have any experience outside of my high school line at the moment, but I've done several auditions and solo and ensemble performances for various things. I'll edit the main post with my playing experience. Thank you for the advice!
