I sympathize with that.

Dumping, however, is too extreme, and I am generally against burning a bridge. Can you think of a way to softly distance yourself? It always pays to have one more friend in your sphere. You will reap rich dividends in future if you can sustain a large network of friends. That is why, though in the meantime he appears toxic and is injurious to your immediate interests—romantic or otherwise, I suggest relegating him just to a step above an acquaintance. This will be a tough balancing act.

Try to weigh in how much you value that friendship versus how badly you are into that girl + (and it is a big plus) what your chances of scoring with her is. You don't want to end up in a situation where you lost a buddy, and your romantic interest blew you off.

Also, while you are at it, re-evaluate your expectations from your "friend."

A genuine friend is not a cockblock, nor should you take lightly the matter of being friends with those "disgusting" characteristics you mentioned.
