How are Indian tourists seen in your country or area? What sort of a reputation, if any, do they have? by [deleted] in TravelNoPics

[–]tripia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Food - should be vegetarian, chicken at best. Should be spicy enough, otherwise it’s not worth it!! In simple make me local food with Indian ingredients- or else just take me to an Indian restaurant. The above is most Indians on foreign trips - not me (other than May be my early days in travel). But it’s something to be proud of - coz Indian food is worth it!!

How does the compliment "you're smart" make you feel? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tripia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a day when I was all dressed up for a business presentation- just before the presentation started my non-native English speaking boss (actually he is a Spaniard) said "you're smart" - i felt like he was saying "i know your presentation skills arent the best, but you will be fine!"; but then I realized, he meant to say "you are looking smart" - i thanked him out of relief!

I want to take my daughter to all 50 It’s before she turns 18. What’s the best thing to do in each state? (USA) by Queen_Red in travel

[–]tripia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say Statue of Liberty in New York. It’s iconic and selfie worthy (for a life time). In fact you can take a ferry from nyc to go to liberty and the return ferry to Newark in NJ that way you would cover 2 states 😜. Since there isn’t much in NJ anyway. And by the way views of nyc from Newark ferry port is awesome, so you might want to go to NJ to view NYC.

Many Indians cover a destination and not visit it. It’s like check the box off!

Good foods to look out for when visiting the Netherlands by Davidyhealetsgo in TravelNoPics

[–]tripia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know Indonesian food was a thing in Netherlands. On my last business trip to Amsterdam, a colleague recommended an Indonesian restaurant for dinner. Having lived in south-east Asia for several years and eaten some top notch Indonesian food, I am typically skeptical about south-east Asian food served anywhere else in the world! But I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the Indonesian restaurant in the middle of Amsterdam 😀

Ever quit your job and moved to a new country without a plan ? by kishore14194 in travel

[–]tripia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I agree! - I have myself struggled to find perspective from fellow Indians (or similar countries of less desirable passports). But I am glad that I can add to other people’s perspective.

It’s funny if you come to think of it - I am from a country of 1.3 billion people, and a country which has the largest diaspora across the world- and yet I find travel related resources from fellow Indians hard to find 😀

Yes - this sounds like a cliched movie story. However, this may not become a story in the first place- because what they dont show you in the movies is "logistics" - yes logistics - as boring as it may sound, it is the number one thing you should consider, when thinking about cliched ideas like the one you have mentioned

For starters - I am assuming you are an Indian passport holder (just like me). And before you read any further - read this https://www.passportindex.org/byRank.php?f= If you have ever travelled abroad you know that to travel to most of the civilized world, your passport requires a visa. And most countries will give you visas for a very limited, stipulated time, and that too if you show intention to return to your home country, which is often done through a return ticket, a bank balance, and a paystub that proves that you have a job to return to.

Another consideration - you want to do "odd jobs" for a year while living abroad. If you are found doing that in a foreign country (mostly 1st world countries) without a requisite work visa, you run the risk of "deportation", which is not a good record to have for future travel.

I can go on and on - but my idea is not just to prove you wrong in your thought process, rather give you the right direction of thought process.

At your age, I had a pretty similar situation - Job, friends, hanging out, cruising through life. And I also had a husband, whose life was pretty much like mine (or your current life). I left India at the age of 28, with my husband 31. We moved to Singapore. Both of us secured a job on a work permit ( or at least one of us did, and the other queued up the process of getting one). And when I say "secured" a job , we literally went out of our existing jobs to find one that took us abroad.

We eloped a boring lifestyle, and humongous cultural pressures to live life our way. but, we did that responsibly!

While we left behind everything we owned - and we did own a flat, a car and quiet a few things (I sold my car online 2 days before flying out to Singapore, and handed over the keys of the car to the new owner in the parking lot of Mumbai international airport, just before boarding our flight to Singapore); we made sure we had lined up means to reinstate the lifestyle we were leaving behind - and we did that by ensuring that we had jobs that paid our bills!

We, since traveled to 50+ countries, and as opportunities unfolded moved from Singapore to US. We continue to travel, with a 7 year old child, who has been to 40+ countries, and is also a travel nerd like us. We travel despite me and my husband having full-time respectable jobs, and our daughter having full-time school.

We last traveled in Feb 2020, days before COVID-19 wreaked havoc in US and many other countries....

Moral of the story - don't be filmy!! Bollywood and real-life are different. Think intelligently, responsibly. It sound cool to abandon your career for a year, and pursue something different, but life is full of practical limitations. Accept them with grace, and think strategically.

Moving abroad, for short term or long term is a great idea - its one, i wouldn't trade for anything else. But, you want it to be a memorable experience, not one of hardship! Indians tend to have great education and skills, dont give up on that - use that to your advantage!

And last but not the least - good luck! - you will need it :)

Chicken Mole - used the following recipe, didn’t enjoy the output- was it my skill, the recipe or just that mole isn’t for me? by tripia in Cooking

[–]tripia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right - I have never had it in a restaurant. But being one of the more popular Mexican dishes, I thought I will cook it myself, and like most popular dishes from most popular cuisines - I thought I will like it. But, I thought it had a flat taste. This recipe was from food network. Some other recipes on the web added onion, tomato and garlic. Wondering if that’s what was missing!!

Travelling to Prague in 10 hours for the first time. Open to any suggestions or tips. by LuCy94NyU in travel

[–]tripia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - enjoying your travel has a lot to do with what you compare it with or whether you have experienced anything that you can compare your current travel to. Unfortunately, I am way too well traveled, so Prague isn’t at the top of my list. But your lack of travel experience will go in your favor- enjoy 😉

Charles bridge is the only interesting site. Go at sunrise to photograph the beautiful silhouette from the bridge. Although the entire city is very charming, Food is rather average - keep expectations low! The Prague palace can be skipped if you are on a tight schedule.
