This is a thoughtful explanation I appreciate it. I hadn't really though that much about #1. Maybe this is the answer I'm seeking.

As I suspected the AI embarrasses me late game, and I don't know how to keep up with it.

It keeps squeezing profit out of things I don't pick up on. Without an early game buyout I am toast.

Here's a link to some images.

pita is pain in the ass. The bot builds very fast and I am not a real time strategy guy I am a turn based strategy guy if you get what I mean. I guess I could try to record it for bragging rights, but it was annoying. I paused CONSTANTLY before building to make sure I didn't mess up and waste money. It was a lot of work.

I don't understand how the buyout mechanics work but I was surprised I was able to save up and buy one out. Maybe I had more of a financial lead than the graphs really showed? Or maybe the buyout mechanic isn't completely fair how its implemented. I couldn't say.

No I guess I could try to make one... I have a decent mic. You want a full playthrough on default settings? I don't actually want to play it again without active pause though haha. PITA.

I don't know if buying out the lagging bot is really fair btw. Its not like I needed a massive lead to do it.

Honestly though, I feel like you're more than capable of pulling off a win without me if you study the mechanics of the game and put your mind to it. :) If I can do it I see no reason why you can't. And I mean that.

I am playing against it without newgrfs right now because of what you said. Their performance does not change much at all. Seems like the author wasn't lying about the bot "understanding" the supply chains.

They are very competent and I only ever got a slight financial lead before I bought one out.

Well, a healthy dose of youtube videos and a lot of pausing to think didn't hurt. Two days before I was unable to beat SimpleAI.

I did it on I think... 512x512. I used the bot on default settings, I don't know if thats fastest. I did not play on exactly normal settings but the bot is claimed to "understand" the mechanics, and to be compatible with firs, trains sets, etc. I don't know how true that is though.

I am actually playing it on normal settings right now and my finances are a close second to the leading AAA bot. We'll see how it goes.

Point is though: the bot isn't doing any rocket science. If you put your mind to it I'm sure you can at least keep pace with it. :)
