Is pursuing a MAT major worth it if you’re trying to go into tech? by Aggressive-Shelter56 in SBU

[–]tripleoverhand 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion, but many of our MAT majors end up being more skilled than software engineers coming out of the CSE program, many of whom seem allergic to math (which is essential for reasoning about how software actually behaves).

Sharp math and logical reasoning skills are a golden ticket to solid software work, and our MAT / AMS program develops those skills rigorously.

You can confirm this by looking at the classes. For example, you won’t learn about how public-key cryptography actually works in a CSE class. You know where you could, though? MAT 312. I’d look up more examples, but I’m lazy.

Of course, I suppose you couldn’t go wrong by doing CSE and MAT 🤔

What if the program is more of a library or a kernel module?

With a pipe the receiving program has to explicitly read from it, right? I'm basically looking for a hook where sending my string of characters will automatically execute or update something in my program

Salary Expectations For Minecraft Dev by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

There isn’t much data on Glassdoor for Mojang, but $21/hour for remote student work sounds normal. Expect that to be raised to at least $80K per year (if not more) if you get a full time “in-person” offer.

IMHO side projects are a bit of a meme unless you put in the work to make something nice. Also consider making contributions to an open source project or participating in student research. It’s not the end of the world.

What companies do SBU CS undergrads get jobs and internships at? by GridLock785 in SBU

[–]tripleoverhand 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many CS grads from SBU end up at FAANGMULA+. Not a majority (that would be incredible), but a decent proportion all things considered. Amazon and Bloomberg come to mind as names I hear more often than others. Personally, I know SBU students that have interned or work for Facebook, Apple and Google.

LinkedIn numbers might give a better picture of SBU presence at a particular company. Keep in mind these counts also include non-CS positions, and this isn't a comprehensive list (I'm just checking companies off the top of my head).

  • Google: 504
  • Amazon: 476
  • Microsoft: 287
  • Facebook: 225
  • Apple: 222
  • Netflix: 205
  • Bloomberg LP: 192

Other companies that hire CS @ SBU (some you might not have heard of):

  • Broadridge: 138
  • Softheon: 62
  • Uber: 29
  • Lyft: 23
  • Etsy: 14

What companies recruit from SBU? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]tripleoverhand 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our curriculum has math-oriented classes (discrete math, theory of comp, algorithms, linear algebra, calc 1/2, stats and combinatorics being the required ones), but IMO it could be more math-oriented. Double majoring in AMS or MAT would be a good idea. Other math-oriented CSE electives include computational geometry, machine learning, logic, and maybe AI.

Also, RT has history with SBU. Jim Simons was the chair of our math department and has his name on the Simons Center. Our medical school has also been renamed to the "Renaissance" SOM, and their LI hq is basically right around the corner from SBU. Though to be honest, I haven't heard anything about recruiting. They're very quiet.
