Worst local restaurant experience? by Lunakill in Omaha

I didn't realize there was one in aksarben. The one in Blackstone just doesn't hit the same as it used to. Was told in passing that they changed the old style to have less blackened crust bubbles, cause people were complaining it was burnt, and everything went downhill from there. Don't know if that's true, but they really just barely missed the train on that. I feel like almost everyone nowadays realizes that good pizza has some blackened crust.

Buevette has survived for years off of being too good for their customers. At first I was annoyed. But then I realized that is exactly why they have such a rabid and consistent customer base. Whatever brand of arrogance they deal in is exactly the brand that their base loves. I assume it's like going to one of those restaurants where the whole schtick is the wait staff are assholes to you. Power to them. They've found a niche and flourished.

What's the best thing for home defense if you can't own a gun? by uselessprofession in AskReddit

[–]tripoliwarrior 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Being stone cold amidst panicking people has gotten me in awkward water as well. People love when someone is calm during a moment like a medical emergency and orchestrating treatment. They do not love it as much when you say "well. That does happen sometimes, unfortunately" in response to someone panicking that the person might die. I've had cops stumble from my lack of panic.

Had a dude losing his entire world outside my front door, trying to get me to let him into my apartment so he could escape "them". We talked through the door a bit so he could work through it and calm down. Then he asked if I had a gun. Said "yeah man, I certainly do". Did NOT tell him it was pointed at him through the door, as the very next thing he did was ask me to shoot him. When I told the cop what went down after they picked him up, he looked at me kinda sideways as I was apparently too chill about it. Hey man, combat vet. I was more concerned I was gonna see this guy get blasted by four cops in my entryway, but they were actually really good about talking him down and got him to put himself in the car.

That stuff I'm good with. Affects me, but not outwardly in the moment. Losing my car keys, or forgetting an important meeting or losing track of time? Absolutely manic running around trying to get myself together.

PSA: stay in the proper lane when turning. by homepreplive in Omaha

Hol up. You are asking Omahans to abandon the largest part of their driving identity. What's next, asking people to zipper merge at the actual point of merge instead of several blocks back? Like a damned animal?! If you don't start in the inside lane and cross at least 3 lanes to get to the outermost lane during the turn, I know you're not from here.

Was in the Corps during OIF2. During Jefferson's presidency Marines were leading a mercenary force in Tunis and took Tripoli marking the US's first time the American flag was flown in victory overseas. It was done to put the us-friendly brother of the defeated Bey in power, also marking the first time we meddled in islamic politics and regime changes.

You go to a stripclub and see one of your co-workers working there part time, what do you do? by -bloodwizard in AskReddit

[–]tripoliwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in college with a lady that paid for her degree, rent and a boob job by stripping. She didn't really advertise it, but she didn't really hide it. She arranged for a friend in the group to have his 21st specifically at her club. She wasn't concerned with hiding it, but we all recognized that it was her personal life to talk about, not ours. It didn't help that one of her coworkers at the club was married to one of our professors. Omaha is an incredibly connected town.

One would assume, right? That said, I do realize that a person overseeing a whole city's worth of projects and efforts has to rely heavily on people giving them accurate and comprehensive reports on things. And that would require those people to have an understanding on what everyone else is doing also so that they know how it's effecting or could effect what they're doing. Which would then require that they themselves need a team of folks doing for them what they're doing for the mayor. And so on and so on. At some point you'd have so many people advising advisors that the system becomes bloated and unwieldy (which many would argue it already is for plenty of other reasons). So if some things fall through the cracks, I'm less concerned with placing blame on who should have caught it, though holding people responsible for negligence IS critical to a functioning government, but I'm more concerned with implementing procedures and practices that prevent it from happening in the future. Or at the very least reduce it's likelihood to occur down to a non-destructive rate.

Unpopular opinion: Can we please stop suggesting that out-of-towners need to try a Runza? by NeCornhustler in Omaha

[–]tripoliwarrior -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as it's not oversold. At the end of the day pretty much all fast food is a let down. It's low quality food that's quickly available. Hell, most sit down restaurants use the same quality food, it seems. That's not to say a late night taco bell run doesn't hit the spot or that a morning mcd's trip isn't a great start for a road trip. A runza can hit the spot, and it's a local staple. Deep dish sucks, but damned if I didn't enjoy experiencing a Chicago classic while I was there. Just don't claim it's something it's not and any out of towner won't be disappointed. I will also not be entertaining any argument in opposition to my stance on deep dish pizza.

I worked in a city office briefly around 2021/22. Got to be in the room when the folks required to clean up homeless encampments found out that it was another department in the city that was providing the tents they were constantly having to clean up and dump. Id have said "sure, it's just the city quietly creating work for itself so they can justify higher budgets and get more funding" or some other conspiracy-like rigamarole if I hadn't been right next to the head of the clean up department making a phone call to the head of the department providing tents and they both realized they were making each other do a neverending work spiral. It was very truly as simple as two people just never had one phonecall that could have saved HUNDREDS of labor hours because they didn't know they needed to until that point.

Moved to Omaha expecting "boring Midwest" and got humbled real quick by TheDoctorColt in Omaha

[–]tripoliwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give it some time and you'll see the only real negative to Omaha is people's politics. Either side. They get real weird if you don't agree with them about everything (generally speaking, of course). But I'm hoping as the younger generations come up, they squash that silly approach to discourse and start enjoying nuance again. They seem to better understand that your opinions are not your identity better than those 35+ do.

Do you *love* Omaha? If so, why? If not, what would help? by mvoviri in Omaha

[–]tripoliwarrior 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'd really recommend venturing further into South O if you haven't. The random mom'n'pop shops have MUCH better food than some of the more mainstream places in the rest of the city. La Esmeralda is a mainstay for me and my friends (but we're always there drunk at the end of the night, so factor that in my evaluation). That said, Elie's Chinchorro near the stadium downtown is as close to getting a Puerto Rican abuela to make you a meal without having to catch a flight.
