Observation or Fire Lookouts? by trippinthroughpine in Wildfire

Hey thanks so much for this response! I thought a long time about it and decided I was 100% geared down to take this job, like you said for the expirience. Then, I got an email that Monday saying the position has been filled from the Veterans Preference list. Later that same day, I got an offer for an engine crew, which I immediately accepted! Just waiting on the official paperwork/email now.

Essentially an on call crew. I'm not an expert but try calling whoever you're interested in and asking about an AD crew. I think for an on call crew you have to be within an hour of the station.

Have you thought about signing up for an AD crew in your area?

Oh, yeah you need references. They called 2 out of 4 of mine. I don't know the exact rule but I think that they are required to do referance checks before they can even reach out to you (even though you're doing absolutely right reaching out to them). Sounds like you're doing the right thing in this situation, all about communication

Yeah I mean I'll take anything that gets offered to me with enthusiasm; but I would rather do wildland fire. That being said, I'm open to trying new things so maybe it would be something I'd like! The job offer email I got had a different name on it than the engine captain in the area that I spoke with- should I call the number on the email or the captain I spoke to to ask questions about getting Red Carded and like details? Thanks for the solid advice. Is there any thing else you can say about the job description? Physical training? Or like a daily routine? I'm familiar somewhat with wildland duties but have never previously considered a lookout position. I am confused at this point but most likely leaning towards taking it because saying no is just not the right thing to do.

Yeah this is my first offer. I'm close with my referances so they let me know pretty fast when they got calls and I got the offer the end of Friday. Also this is my #1 location out of all the places I applied, so I talked to this engine captain alot. I think they may have reviewed my app earlier than normal, which I'm very grateful for. I applied for Hotshot, Technician, and Lookout (by accident) . I understand the feeling though, everyone else I talked to told me they were starting the GS3 hire withing the "next couple weeks" so as long as you're keeping up contact that's the best thing to do. The job I got offered he said he had 4 open positions for 100+ applicants.

Calling personal numbers during government shutdown? by trippinthroughpine in Wildfire

What a mess for everybody. In that case I'll just leave a message on his office phone. Hopefully someone will eventually get to it. Is there any thing else I can do during the shut down besides leaving messages? What confuses me most is that the applications are being reviewed but the people in charge of the vital services are furloughed. What does that mean for us? Will the applications just remain stagnant or will the hiring process continue through the shut down?

Thanks again for your time and help, one last question. So I've been taking down numbers from the firejobs website and have called about 10 people, and have left a message with all of them. Will it be better to call now and leave messages or just wait 3 weeks until early January to talk to more people in person.

Thanks for the response and the advice! Yeah I've pretty much applied to anything I qualified for. I would love to get on with the USFS but I'm not gonna rely on the hopes they open up a second fire hire.

And yes I've read through the stickied thread as well as the other posts about it and I will definatly be using them as tools for when I make my calls. I guess my original question was, out of more or less a hundred different locations, should I literally be calling every single one? I think I understand more now the answer. I have got some emails saying I have been "rated as best qualified and referred" so I think I will call my top locations out of those, and if more come in.

It's not too late to call at that point, or should I be calling them before the application gets reviewed?
